"Princess of China" is a song by British alternative rock band Coldplay with guest vocals by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna. It is the tenth track from Coldplay's fifth studio album Mylo Xyloto (2011). "Princess of China" was written by band members Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion, and Chris Martin, along with Brian Eno, and draws influences from the music genres of electronic rock, electropop and R&B. The song released to US mainstream radio on 14 February 2012. It was released as a digital download worldwide on 13 April 2012. A remixes EP was released worldwide on 1 June 2012. It was released in the UK on 4 June 2012.

The song was met with a generally favorable response from music critics, with some praising the collaboration between Martin and Rihanna, though others criticized it for being uninspiring. "Princess of China" has performed well on international charts around the world, and has so far peaked at number 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number four on the UK Singles Chart. It has also reached the top ten of the Australian and New Zealand charts.

The song's accompanying music video, directed by Adria Petty and Alan Bibby, was filmed on 22 March and 23 March 2012 in Los Angeles. The video was released on 2 June 2012.

Rihanna vocals featured on Princess Of China

Coldplay revealed on 12th September 2011 that singer Rihanna's vocals features on the track Princess Of China. The song features the singer's vocals, and Chris Martin revealed it took him some time before he could pluck up the courage to ask her to appear on the track - all this came from an article via The Sun in the early hours of 12th September 2011 and then was confirmed via the official site just hours later.

"She has such an amazing voice and it's so different to mine," Chris Martin told The Sun. "When the vocal happened I thought 'Wow, you sound different' but I think that's also because she was singing a different song to what we are used to hearing from her and it is written by a bloke from Devon."

Chris Martin also recalled the moment when he asked the Bajan singer whether she would be up for the collaboration, admitting that he was initially nervous about approaching the star. "The album is designed as a whole piece. It has boy and girl lead characters and top of our list for the girl part was Rihanna... but it took a while to pluck up the courage to ask her," he said. "We did a show in Las Vegas and I met her and said, 'Do you think there's any chance?' I was very Hugh Grant-like and spluttering about it."

Behind The Song Fact :

Frontman Chris Martin told Rolling Stone that he christened this song and the album "Viva la Vida" - meaning "long live life" or more literally, "the life lives" - after he saw the phrase on a painting by Mexican artists Frida Kahlo. He explained: "She went through a lot of s--t, of course, and then she started a big painting in her house that said 'Viva la Vida.' I just loved the boldness of it."

The movie Frida, starring Salma Hayek, is about her life. You can see the painting that inspired the title in Song Images. Both this and "Violet Hill" debuted in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for week ending May 24, 2008. It is a rare feat for an act to have two songs debuting in the same week. This song was released exclusively on iTunes, and was featured in a commercial for the music-download service that showed stylized images of the band performing the song. The spot hyped the song nicely, presenting the name of it at the end - helpful since the title doesn't appear in the lyrics.

Bassist Guy Berryman explained to Q magazine July 2008 about this song that features lyrics about cavalries, missionaries and kings: "It's a story about a king who's lost his kingdom, and all the album's artwork is based on the idea of revolutionaries and guerrillas. There's this slightly anti-authoritarian viewpoint that's crept into some of the lyrics and it's some of the payoff between being surrounded by governments on one side, but also we're human beings with emotions and we're all going to die and the stupidity of what we have to put up with every day. Hence the album title."

Q magazine asked Chris Martin about the lyric on this song "I know Saint Peter won't call my name." The Coldplay lead singer replied: "It's about… You're not on the list. I was a naughty boy. It's always fascinated me that idea of finishing your life and then being analyzed on it. And it's that runs through most religions. That's why people blow up buildings. Because they think they're going to get lots of virgins. I always feel like saying, Just join a band (cackles head off). That is the most frightening thing you could possibly say to somebody. Eternal damnation. I know about this stuff because I studied it. I was into it all. I know it. It's still mildly terrifying to me. And this is serious."

Drummer Will Champion told Q magazine February 2008 that many of the tracks on the album share a theme of "trying to remember what's important in your life, rather than being carried away by the trappings of other things."

Coldplay hired Brian Eno (David Bowie, Talking Heads, and U2) to produce this album. X&Y saw the end of what the band calls "Oldplay" and they felt they wanted to start off fresh and explore different directions. Guitarist Jonny Buckland explained to Rolling Stone: "We felt like the first three albums were a trilogy, and we finished that. So we wanted to do something different."

Bassist Guy Berryman told Rolling Stone about working with Eno: "It wasn't so much that he brings like a sound or something to it. He brings lots of ideas about everything, even down to like how we structured our day."

When this reached to Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, Coldplay became the first British male group to score a second top 10 hit on the Hot 100 in 17 years, (they'd previously reached #8 with "Speed Of Sound" in May 2005). In 1991 both Jesus Jones ("Right Here, Right Now" and "Real Real Real.") and the Escape Club ("Wild Wild West" and "I'll Be There") scored their second (and last) US Top 10 hits. The album sleeve is a reproduction of Eugène Delacroix's painting Liberty Leading The People, which commemorates the French Revolution of 1830.

Chris Martin spoke to MTV News about this song: "I think everything we're trying to do at the moment is about not starting again so much as breaking down what we've built up before and trying to build something different and hopefully better, or worse in a good way. And this song is one of our favorites, because none of us are doing anything on it that we've ever done before. But we really enjoy playing it. The longer you go on as a band, the harder it is to surprise yourself."

A little-known US group called Creaky Boards accused Coldplay of stealing this song's melody from a number they wrote in 2007 called, ironically, "The Songs I Didn't Write." Andrew Hoepfner, Creaky Boards' singer and songwriter, alleged that Chris Martin attended a Creaky Boards concert in New York in October 2007. Coldplay vigorously denied the allegations claiming that on the night Martin was supposed to be watching them, he was actually working at the Air Studio in London. Additionally this song was written and demoed seven months before the night in question.

When this hit the summit of the US Hot 100 with Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" as runner-up in June 2008, this marked the first time that Capitol has had the top two slots on the American singles chart in the same week for over 40 years. The previous instance had been in September 1967, when the label had Bobbie Gentry's "Ode To Billie Joe" at #1 and the Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" at #2.

Coldplay were the first British group to hit #1 on the Hot 100 for over ten years. The previous British group to top the US singles chart was the Spice Girls with "Wannabe" in February 1997. The album broke the record for most iTunes downloads in a single day, previously held by Jack Johnson's Sleep Through the Static . By the time this had reached #1 in both the UK and US, a promotional video had yet to be released to accompany it.

This was at least the eighth US #1 hit where the title was at least partially in Spanish, following "Bailamos," "El Paso," "I Adore Mi Amor," "La Bamba," "Livin' La Vida Loca," "Macarena" and "Tequila." This was the 4th US chart-topper this century and the first by a group not to feature its title in the song's lyrics. The others have been "Dilemma" by Nelly featuring Kelly Rowland, "Foolish," by Ashanti and "Family Affair" by Mary J. Blige.

Chris Martin told The London Times November 28, 2008, he saw this song about a deposed dictator reduced to "sweep[ing] the streets I used to own" as being "really positive." He explained that he saw it as "more like a turning-over-a-new-leaf kind of song." Martin added that its like I've messed up, "and I don't mind being punished, but I can get redemption."

The Viva La Vida album was the most downloaded set of 2008 on iTunes, with more than 500,000 digital copies sold since its release in June. The second most downloaded album was Jack Johnson's Sleep Through the Static, followed by the soundtrack to Juno Meanwhile the title track of Viva La Vida was the second most downloaded single behind Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love."

On December 4, 2008, the American Rock guitarist Joe Satriani filed a lawsuit against Coldplay, accusing them of plagiarizing the melody of "If I Could Fly" from his 2004 album Is There Love in Space?. Satriani alleged that Coldplay had "copied and incorporated substantial original portions" of his instrumental track. It was announced on September 15, 2009 that the two parties had settled their legal entanglements and Satriani's lawsuit alleging copyright infringement had been dismissed, with both parties potentially agreeing to an out-of-court settlement.
This reached #1 on the Hot 100, Hot Digital Songs, Adult Top 40 Airplay, Triple A Airplay, Modern Rock Airplay and Adult Contemporary charts. It was the first song to reach the top position on all six tallies.

This won for Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 2009. Coldplay performed it on the broadcast, where the album also won for Best Rock Album. Beating out Metallica for the award, Chris Martin explained, "We're not the heaviest of Rock bands - we're more like limestone, a little softer, but just as charming."

Viva La Vida was the best selling album worldwide of 2008 with 6.8 million copies sold. AC/DC's Black Ice was the second best seller of 2008, followed by the Mamma Mia! soundtrack.

In addition to Joe Satrini's lawsuit, Yusuf Islam claimed this resembles his 1973 song, "Foreigner Suite," which he recorded under his old name of Cat Stevens. Coldplay drummer Will Champion responded to the claims of plagiarism to HamptonRoads.com by claiming the band are a victim of their success. Said Champion: "It's tough when people accuse you of stealing something, when you know that you didn't. So, we accept that it's part of the territory and know it is only for some reason, God only knows why, the successful songs that seem to be the ones that are accused of being stolen. So you go figure it out." Her added: "There are elements of our music that I've heard in other people's music. It's interesting but a very difficult thing to define. There are only eight notes in an octave and no one owns them. And there are probably about 12,000 songs that feature the exact same chord progression. I think it lies on an intent to steal, which we certainly have never done and never would. So, it's unfortunate but it's the way people are. That's that. We're confident we haven't done anything wrong."

This picked up the award for Song of the Year at the 29th Annual ASCAP Awards in London.

This song is about a scientist who is so caught up in his work that he neglects his girlfriend, but realizes it eventually and wants to "go back to the start" and begin fresh.

The music video shows lead singer Chris Martin driving with his girlfriend. They get into an accident, she goes flying through the windshield and dies. Chris just walks out of the car, out of the forest, and into a city. This is all backwards. The video was shot normal direction and then played backwards, while Chris sang the lyrics to the song backwards. (thanks, student - New York, NY, for above 2)

Chris Martin (from Rolling Stone July 14, 2005): "On the second album I was thinking there was something missing. I was in this really dark room in Liverpool, and there was a piano so old and out of tune. I really wanted to try and work out the George Harrison song 'Isn't It A Pity,' but I couldn't. Then this song came out at once. I said, 'Can you turn on the recorder?' The first time I sung it is what's out there."

After listening to the song in reverse over and over again Chris realized how beautiful the end of the song was when played backwards. This is the second single from Coldplay's fifth album Mylo Xyloto. The single was shipped to radio on September 12, 2011 and debuted that day at 7:50am on BBC Radio 1's Chris Moyles Show.
The song finds Martin singing of a young girl's dashed hopes and dreams of paradise. The Coldplay frontman told Billboard magazine that Mylo Xyloto is a concept album, which is, "loosely a kind of romance in an oppressive environment." This song appears be some sort of sequel to the previous single, "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall," whose title is even included in "Paradise"'s lyrics.
The song finds Martin taking a narrator role, which he told Billboard was influenced by listening to Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.
So what does the strange album title mean? Chris Martin explained to Music Week: "It means whatever you want it to mean. [To me] it means a freedom of expression and you can think up new words if you want to. There's still things that you can invent and words beginning with X are few and far between so we thought we might try and add one."

Regarding this song's meaning, it is easier to explain in the context of the album. Martin told MTV News Mylo Xyloto is a story, explaining: "It's supposed to be about two people who grow up separately in a very big oppressive city, and they each are a bit lost in their lives." He added that the pair meet in a gang and fall in and out of love before getting back together at the end. The singer went on to say: "Paradise is about a girl really, the female half of the album, just about being a bit lost in the world and escaping through fantasy."
The music video was directed by longtime collaborator Mat Whitecross and was shot on location in London, Cape Town, and the Klein Karoo in the Western Cape and Johannesburg. We believe it is the first ever visual to feature a lead singer, in this instance Chris Martin, dressed as an elephant riding a unicycle.

Drummer Will Champion revealed to MTV News that Mylo Xyloto was originally intended to be an acoustic album, but the band's plans disintegrated after writing this song. He explained: "Very early on in the process of recording this record, we were playing a lot of acoustic instruments and we had it in our mind that we might try to record a small-sounding, intimate, reflective record. And then 'Paradise' came about, and it dawned on us that we couldn't play it in that acoustic style. So we thought, 'OK, we'll finish this one and then we'll do another record,' and the realization came very quickly that we can't really focus on more than one thing at once."

Some of the songs from their acoustic project survived such as "Us Against The World." Also "Charlie Brown" was originally in that format.
When asked by Q magazine how he learnt to ride a unicycle so well for the video, Martin replied deadpan: "We didn't get bicycles in Devon until 1996, so we had to make do with what we could."
The song topped the singles chart in several countries including Brazil, Norway, Portugal and the UK. "Paradise" landed at pole position in the UK in its 10th week on the chart, the longest climb to #1 since Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" had a similar ten week ascent in 2009.

This is about insecurity. The line, "So you lost your trust and you never should have" states that the person was so insecure that there was no reason to lose trust. Then he says, "Don't break your back if you ever hear this, don't answer that," meaning not to fret - time will do it's thing if you just think and listen. The line, "In a bulletproof vest, with the windows all closed, I'll be doing my best and I'll see you soon" means that the person protects themselves, not letting anyone in. "Don't Panic" is a song written and recorded by British alternative rock band Coldplay. Originally titled "Panic", the earliest known version of the song existed in 1998, performed live during the band's first gig in the same year. It had a different melody, and was included in the band's second EP, The Blue Room. The track was reproduced by Coldplay and British producer Ken Nelson for the band's debut studio album, Parachutes.

Following their successful releases in 2000, Coldplay and their record label Parlophone thought there was enough exposure of the album in the United Kingdom. Thus, the decision of releasing a fourth single would be for regions that had not been overdosed by the hit singles "Yellow" and "Trouble". They settled on "Don't Panic", which at the time was an audience favorite. The single was released in some European regions, and the United Kingdom only received a promo edition. The critical reception of the song was generally positive.

On 19 July 2011, the song was played as a wake-up call to STS-135 Space Shuttle Atlantis Pilot Doug Hurley as a tribute from his wife and family, marking the last ever wake-up call for a crew visiting the International Space Station from the Space Shuttle fleet.

Origins and production

"Don't Panic" came into existence while Coldplay was still in its infancy. In the time, the band had written 10 songs including an early version of "Don't Panic", and used it in recruiting the band's drummer. It was originally called "Panic", and was one of six songs played at Coldplay's first gig in 1998 at Camden's Laurel Tree.This version has a different melody, and the lyrics are an account of a "slightly disastrous evening Chris had spent entertaining a young lady called Alice Hill".Eventually, the title became "Don't Panic."

The original version of "Don't Panic" was recorded in 1999, different from the version featured in Parachutes. First, vocalist Chris Martin plays the piano during the bridge. As well, there is a feedback-distorted introduction. This version was included in The Blue Room EP, released in October 1999.

For Coldplay's first studio album Parachutes, British record producer Ken Nelson re-produced "Don't Panic". The track was recorded live, like many other tracks featured in the album. Guitarist Jonny Buckland recorded twice his overdubbed guitars, and used parts of the two during the mixing. The band subtly used the acoustic guitar, drums and bass, and also a pump organ.The song was recorded in Rockfield Studios, Wales and Parr Street Studio, Liverpool.

"Don't Panic" is the opening track to Parachutes. A guitar-based song, it begins with a strummed electric guitar, followed with more guitar lines, then the vocals.A review claims that Coldplay's indie rock inclination is obvious in the song.

Originally, the band planned to release "Don't Panic" as Parachutes' fourth single. However, it was abandoned after they deemed three singles were enough for an album. Following the successful single releases of the album in 2000, the band thought that Parachutes had gained enough exposure in significant regions in the United Kingdom. When they decided to release a fourth single, it would be for countries yet not "overdosed" by the hit singles "Yellow" and "Trouble". Coldplay and their record label, Parlophone, settled on "Don't Panic", which at the time was an audience favorite. The single was eventually released on 19 March 2001 in some European regions. The single is accompanied by the live tracks "You Only Live Twice", a theme song for the James Bond film of the same name, and "Bigger Stronger", a song taken from the band's first EP release; these live tracks were recorded during their performance at the Rockefeller Music Hall in Norway. "Don't Panic" appeared on the UK compilation album Now That's What I Call Music! 48.

The music video for "Don't Panic" was directed by Tim Hope. The video starts off with an animated diagram of the water cycle, then portrays the band as two-dimensional paper cutouts doing household chores, when suddenly disaster strikes the earth in the forms of floods, volcanoes and electric shocks. Like Coldplay's earlier music videos, "Don't Panic" also features the yellow globe on the cover of Parachutes.

Coldplay | Bigger Stronger - Is one of the Track listing from the album of "Safety".

Safety was the first public release by British rock band Coldplay. It was recorded over a weekend during May 1998, and was intended as a demo for record companies. It was financed by the band and their manager Phil Harvey for around £200.

Everyone involved was so pleased with the finished product that they decided to pay for 500 copies to be manufactured for distribution around London. Only about 50 copies ever made it to record stores, as they gave most of the copies away to record companies and their friends and families.[1] The EP is unavailable on iTunes and therefore is such a rarity that it is known to fetch in excess of £2000 on eBay.

Although this EP is not the most readily available of Coldplay releases (along with the Mince Spies EP), "Bigger Stronger" and "Such a Rush" (in an edited form) were both on the second proper Coldplay release The Blue Room EP, and "No More Keeping My Feet on the Ground" appeared as the B-side to "Yellow", on the UK CD release. The cover photo of lead singer Chris Martin was taken by John Hilton, a friend of the band.

Coldplay - Fix You - This song deals with true love, helping someone in your time of need, and learning from your mistakes. Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin hasn't spoken about the specific inspiration for the song, but it could be directed to his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, who was dealing with the death of her father in 2002. In USA Today, Martin did say where the song started: "My father-in-law Bruce Paltrow bought this big keyboard just before he died. No one had ever plugged it in. I plugged it in, and there was this incredible sound I'd never heard before. All these songs poured out from this one sound. Something has to inspire you, and something else takes over. It's very cloudy."

When writing this song, Chris martin was influenced by Muse's use of church organ on the track "Megalomania" from their album Origin Of symmetry. (thanks, Donovan Berry - El Dorado, AR). The song debuted on the show The O.C. in episode 2.23 called "The O Sea." It is featured in a montage of Seth and Summer dancing at the O Sea dance, Caleb dying, and Kirsten learning of her father's death and taking a bottle of vodka to bed. (thanks, Sarah - Canada).

This is the Coldplay song Chris Martin is proudest of. He explained why to Mojo magazine December 2011: "Because it's so unlikely that that song would have come out of that period. The rest of that album (X&Y) I like, but I don't think it's great. Whereas that song… it's the best one because it almost single-handedly got us through a really difficult two years. You could say it's too soft or whatever, but… it does exactly what it says on the tin. Even when I'm singing it, by the time I get to the end, I'm thinking, 'I like this'."
