Tis' the Season

It's the season for giving, and that is exactly what our resident's did again this year! December 2nd marked our seventh annual Seniors Helping Seniors Christmas Tea and Craft Fair.

The day was filled with fun as resident's showed off their crafts to the community and guests enjoyed a special Christmas tea and delicious treats made by our baker here at Coldstream Meadows.

The raffle included 8 baskets this year, all filled with handmade goods donated by our lovely residents. Raffle ticket sales and donations raised $1200 to donate to local seniors in need! We were able to put together gift baskets for 11 senior families that included gift cards for groceries and other gift items. A big thank you to Nexus BC for helping get those baskets distributed.

We thank everyone for their generosity and hope that next year's event will be just as successful!

Starting the Conversation

You’ve noticed a change in your senior parent recently and you are wondering how to bring up the subject of getting them some help. It can be hard to accept and admit that you are struggling- and sometimes even harder if it is to your child- the person you have always been the caregiver for- not the other way around!

There are many reasons a person may choose to look for a retirement community. For some, it is health issues and needing extra care or nursing services. For others, it is a struggle to take care of cooking or cleaning. For some it is even a need for more socialization and company- living on your own can be scary, frustrating and lonely. Most retirement communities will offer meals, housekeeping services and recreational/activity programs. Communities that are registered to provide care services can also help with medications, bathing, activities of daily living, and various other services.

Before taking on the daunting task of going to look at every retirement community available, it is good to start by doing your research. Nexus BC, a local senior’s resource center, puts out an annual guide to Seniors Housing in the North Okanagan. This guide lists all seniors housing in the North Okanagan and gives a small summary of what each one offers.

If there are other decision makers involved, get together so you can all be on the same page. Decide who the best person to bring up the subject is. If you think there is going to be push back, start slow. If your loved one is better at a certain time of time, try the conversation at that time. Be positive and patient and listen to what they have to say. Be sensitive to feelings and open to ideas, but if the need is great, also be firm about your concerns.

If your loved one tires or confuses easy it can be best to check out the communities on your own first to see if you think the community would be a good fit, narrow it down to your top few choices and take your loved one only to those top choices. By doing this you can eliminate frustration, exhaustion and confusion about what was looked at and what was liked.

Winter is Coming!

Winter is coming and with it comes extra maintenance!

Shoveling walks, plowing driveways, de-icing, wiping cars, changing tires- the list goes on.

Winter also brings safety concerns. If you are planning to stay in your home this winter, keep in mind some tips to stay safe:

1. Wear shoes with good traction and non-slip soles
2. Bundle up! Keep warm with layers and cover exposed skin
3. Ensure that your car has been maintained and that you have appropriate tires
4. Fight the winter blues- set up a time to regularly talk or visit with family or friends. Winter can feel isolating and social stimulation can be very helpful in fighting those feelings.

Many retirement communities offer a break from the maintenance of winter and provide a safe, warm, social atmosphere for seniors to be.

Coldstream Meadows is pleased to announce the introduction of our Comfort Plan which is part of our overall Assisted Living services provided to residents. The Comfort Plan has evolved from extensive input from residents, families and our staff. In the words of one of our many caregivers “I see far too many residents of Coldstream Meadows struggling with many daily activities and we can help these residents with just a small amount of assistance. It will make their lives at The Meadows so much better and I am sure a reasonably priced service would be very attractive to many residents.” And based on this comment and many others the Comfort Plan has arrived. We know that the needs of residents varies from person to person and that is why the Comfort Plan has been designed with flexibility and a broad range of services that can be accessed.

The Comfort Plan offers the following services:

-Orientation and re-orientation as required (sometimes it’s easy to forget what goes on at The Meadows)

Our Assisted Living program is now up and running and we are very excited to have welcomed a number of residents to the program.

Natalie, our Assisted Living Coordinator, along with our Care Team are doing a great job caring for our Assisted Living residents and have made it easy and comfortable for residents to receive the care they need.

Hospitality services, such as meals, housekeeping and social/recreation programs have always been available but we can now offer care services in addition to these. Bathing, grooming, medication assistance, AM/PM care, daily monitoring and more can all be offered within our Assisted Living program. We have a nurse on staff 10.5 hours a day and 24/7 care aides. Our program is personalized to the individual resident and we constantly monitor each resident to determine how well their care plan is suiting their needs.

These Boots Were Made for Walking

Our walking program has officially begun!

Our goal is to walk the distance of the new Okanagan Rail Trail (48.5 km!). Resident services will keep track of each resident's kilometers and we will hopefully walk enough to make it all the way from Vernon to Kelowna!

We will be encouraging all of our residents to move and remind them "it is not a race but a slow consistent way to build stronger bones & improve balance."

We are happy to announce that Coldstream Meadows will be offering an Assisted Living program in the new year.

The new Assisted Living program offers: 24/7 emergency response, a Nurse and Care Aides to assist with resident' medications and activities of daily living as well as an advanced Recreation program.

The Assisted Living program is registered through the Ministry of Health with a focus on elders living independently where professional caregivers are available to support resident' health and well being.

The Coldstream Meadows program will offer the following Assisted Living Services:

Assistance with the activities of daily living (bathing, grooming, dressing, etc. per resident’s specific needs)
Medication administration or assistance
Respite care
Socialization and companion time
Other services allowed for by the Assisted Living program
Emergency pendant and 24/7 response to resident’s needs

This past weekend we hosted our 5th annual Seniors Helping Seniors Christmas Tea and Craft Fair. With the help of our incredible residents, our staff and our supportive community we raised $796.05 to donate to seniors in need. This amount far surpassed our goal of $600 and help set a record for the most amount raised with this fundraiser. There was a great turnout for the event, and all had fun perusing resident's craft booths and sampling our selection of tea and cookies. Thank you to all who came out and to all of those residents who donated items to the gift baskets that were raffled off. We would also like to thank Kal Tire, Hopanagan Farms, Gordon Foods and Sysco for their donations and extend a thank you to the North Okanagan Optimist Club for helping to sell raffle tickets and volunteering to serve at the event. We are so lucky to live in such a generous community that allows us to make events like this a success!

Safety Tips for Winter Walking

Safety Tips for Winter Walking

When the winter air is crisp and the ground is covered with snow, there’s nothing like taking a walk to enjoy the beauty of the season — and walking is one of the best ways to keep fit.

On the other hand, winter can be a challenging time of year to get out and about. Freezing rain, icy surfaces and piles of hard-packed snow pose a hazard for the innocent pedestrian.

Just one bad fall on ice can have long-term consequences. These include: chronic pain in the affected area; a disabling injury that may mean loss of independence; or fear of another fall, which discourages a healthy, active lifestyle.

Basic Precautions

As winter approaches, outfit yourself for safe walking:

1. Choose a good pair of winter boots. For warmth and stability look for these features: well-insulated, waterproof, thick non-slip tread sole made of natural rubber, wide low heels, light-weight.

2. Ice grippers on footwear can help you walk on hard packed snow and ice. But be careful! Grippers become dangerously slippery and must be removed before walking on smooth surfaces such as stone, tile and ceramic. Before buying the grippers, be sure that you are able to attach and remove them from your boots, this is best done sitting down.

3. Use a cane, or even a pair of ski poles or walking sticks to help with balance. Make sure they're the right height for you. When your cane is held upside down, the end should be at wrist level. Speak to your doctor, pharmacist or local public health department about how to use a cane properly.

4. If using a cane, attach a retractible ice pick to the end. Cane picks will be slippery on hard surfaces so be sure to flip it back as you get indoors. Picks are inexpensive and available at most drug stores.

5. If you need further support, use a walker. The cost might be defrayed by government programs; talk with your doctor.

6. Wear a hip protector (a lightweight belt or pant with shields to guard the hips). It can help protect the hips against fractures and give added confidence.

7. Help other road users see you by wearing bright colors or adding reflective material to clothing.

8. Prevent heat loss by wearing a warm hat, scarf, and mittens or gloves. Dressing in layers may also keep you warmer.

Walking on Ice

Facing an icy surface can be a paralyzing experience. Not everyone has grippers and other safety aids. So, what should you do if it’s impossible to avoid an icy patch? Believe it or not, body movements can increase your stability on an icy surface.

1. Slow down and think about your next move. Keeping your body as loose as possible, spread your feet to more than a foot apart to provide a base of support. This will help stabilize you as you walk.

2. Keep your knees loose -- let them bend a bit. This will keep your centre of gravity lower to the ground, which further stabilizes the body.

3. Now you are ready to take a step. Make the step small, placing your whole foot down at once. Then shift your weight very slowly to this foot and bring your other foot to meet it the same way. Keep a wide base of support.

4. Some people prefer to drag their feet or shuffle them. If this feels better to you, then do so. Just remember to place your whole foot on the ice at once and keep your base of support approximately one foot wide.

Of course, it’s always better to avoid tricky situations by being prepared and planning a safe route for your walk.

Good Morning ladies and gentlemen of all ages!

When asked if I could give a little talk on War and Peace, without giving it much thought I said I would, so this morning I’d like to know YOUR thoughts!

PEACE OR WAR?

I’m almost sure you would prefer peace, am I right?

I was born and raised on my dad’s homestead near Battleford Saskatchewan. At the time when Hitler of Germany invaded Poland, Canada was drawn into the conflict.

At age 21 I was called to join the Army in Regina, our Capital. I had just become a married man, but when you’re called to serve your Country – you must go. I started training as a foot soldier which included using a rifle, marching long distances and using weapons to kill the enemy – humans like ourselves. Now that did not sit well with me – a peaceful farmer – so after months of training, I listened to a Major who spoke to us after our church service about a troupe mobilizing a special unit on ski’s to carry medical supplies up north near the Bering Strait. Well I liked skiing so I transferred to this medical unit and took special ski instruction and prepared for that by joining the Medical Core.

The Medical Core became part of the overseas service in England and all through the European campaign. We crossed the ocean to Scotland via a huge liner ‘The Queen Elizabeth’, converted to carry troops. We landed at Grenoch, Scotland after 4 ½ day crossing, then down to near London, England where we trained nearly a year to become a Hospital under tents like Mash on TV (ever watch that?)

When we crossed the English, channel on smaller open boats, we were dumped into cold water and waded to shore in France that was an area only 10kms deep taken over by our Allies with the enemy on three sides.

We set up our huge tents to become the first war time Hospital on German occupied French soil and started taking in wounded soldiers, air-men, sailors and those of captured enemy in fact even a few civilians if injured by war action.

We were not allowed to carry weapons period!

This was somewhat scary (as we were still young) But a huge tarpaulin – white with a huge red cross in our “yard” was supposed to keep us safe according to a War Agreement of all Countries made by Geneva ( ask your teacher to explain).

I am almost 98 years old and although I lived through the war with only a back injury – it is a vivid memory. I had several close calls that could have taken my life.

There is nothing glamorous about War, I hope you never have to experience it.

Our 5th annual Seniors Helping Seniors Christmas Tea and Craft Fair is coming up on Sunday, November 27th.

Come on down to Coldstream Meadows between 1:30 and 3:30, take a browse through the crafts and homemade goods for sale by our talented residents and enjoy tea and fresh baked goods made by our fantastic baker. This Fall, Prevent Falls

The season is fall, but don't let that trip you up!

A few facts about falls:

-Falls are the leading case of injury among seniors, accounting for 85% of hospitalizations due to injury
- 1 out of 3 persons aged 65 or over is likely to fall at least once per year
-Fractures caused by falls due to osteoporosis are more common than heart attacks, strokes and breast cancer combined

Things you can do to prevent falls:

1) Exercise regularly
-Lack of exercise causes weakness which leads to falls
-Strong muscles from exercise improve balance and coordination

2) Have your vision checked
-Poor vision can be a major factor in tripping hazards
-Wearing the proper glasses and prescription make it easier to navigate areas and decrease changes of falling

3) Make your home safer
-Adequate lighting
-Keep objects that are used often on easy to reach shelves
-Remove tripping hazards- loose rugs, books, clothes etc
-Use handrails and safety bars where necessary

At Coldstream Meadows, residents are invited to join a number of fitness programs. Chair exercises, hallway walking, garden walks. All of these programs help to make our residents strong and decrease chances of falling.

For piece of mind for both the resident and their families, we also have a 24 hour emergency pendant system which allows the resident to call for help at any time of day in case of a fall or emergency.

Rental Subsidy Options for Seniors

When searching for private pay retirement accommodations, some seniors find that their budget just won't cut it. Many communities provide meals, housekeeping, 24 hour staffing, emergency response systems, shuttle buses and activities and the rental rate needs to reflect the cost of all the services provided.

There a few options for seniors that are in need of a something extra to supplement their monthly income. BC Housing has a great program for low income seniors. Seniors need to meet the eligibility requirements and send in a submission form to apply. The below link will take you to the BC Housing site and guide you through the process.

What are you thankful for?

Thanksgiving weekend has come and gone, and it has left me thinking. We only seem to express thankfulness one day a year- when we have things to be thankful for all year round!

We are so lucky to live in Canada, and particularly in the Okanagan Valley. We live where others come to vacation- how amazing is that? We are lucky that we have access to technology and healthcare. We are lucky to have friends and families. We are lucky to live near lakes, mountains, hiking trails, ski hills and golf courses. We are lucky to have four beautiful seasons. The list goes on... and gets me thinking about the things we have to be thankful for here at Coldstream Meadows.

Just to name a few: our incredible residents who have lived long fulfulling lives, and have many unique stories to tell about all of their wonderful experiences and adventures, the diverse and talented staff we have, the amazing property that we are situated on, all the activities we provide and the wonderful people who come to entertain, volunteer and care for our residents. My list goes on, and I know many of the residents here feel the same. The picture below is a thankfulness tree that residents decorated with just a few of the things they are thankful for.

Whenever you are feeling down about something, just think about all the things you have in your life to be thankful for and I bet you will start feeling better soon!

Winter is Just Around the Corner....

The days are getting shorter, the mornings are getting colder, the leaves are changing color, and that fluffy white stuff is just around the corner. While snow is lovely to look at, it is less lovely to shovel and plow. It is also not so nice to drive in.

Winter can be a dangerous season for seniors. Some of the main concerns include: falls, injury while shoveling snow, and accidents while driving.

If you are worried about spending another winter in a home with a driveway that is too hard to plow, or a place where going out to get groceries on the winter roads is uncomfortable, consider a home at Coldstream Meadows.

Our full time maintenance team, and on-call snow plow staff keep the grounds plowed and salted. The Coldstream Meadows shuttle bus takes residents into town to do errands or attend appointments. Our kitchen cooks three fresh meals a day, and all residents- in both independent and supportive living- are welcome to participate in the meal plan.

The rooms are clean and have a lovely view from the spacious windows to the mountains, lawns, trees and gardens. It is very quiet and peaceful. I would recommend it to any senior who needs a little more help in their everyday life."

Spring at The Meadows

There is nothing like springtime at Coldstream Meadows. Flowers have begun to bloom, the lawns are green, birds are chirping and the smell of freshly cut grass wafts through open windows with the warm spring breeze.

Residents are out and about and can be found walking the grounds or enjoying the warmth of the sun under the cover of our courtyard table umbrellas. Our green-thumbed residents are seen planting and pampering their well-loved plants. Our lobby chairs are full as residents relax and enjoy the sunshine pouring through the windows that surround the area. The view outside showcases garden beds of brightly colored tulips in full bloom.

Residents are happy, staff members are happy and families are happy as they come by to visit their loved one. It's hard to have a bad day when you are surrounded by so much good. How lucky we are to call Coldstream Meadows home!
