The arduous process of casting a single net and claiming the catch takes around 2-3 hours. First the group of men claim the boat from shore and move it manually towards the waves. Endless wait for the right wave in hot sun sets the boat in motion. A big round by a few boatmen in the vast sea, while other wait to claim the boat back to the shore after the catch.

Result - a meager catch auctioned to the hoteliers by the beach. The catch is shared equally by the group of all helpers and sailors.

This picture is part of a UNHCR photography project, carried out with the assistance of a professional photographer Brendan Bannon. The project is entitled "Do you see what I see?", and gives refugee children the opportunity to learn how to use a camera and have the opportunity to give the world a vivid, emotional look into their lives.

"See refugee life through the voices and visions of children, who are experts on their own lives." Brendan Bannon

Because there are no regular schools at the Teknaf site, refugee children from Burma read the Koran in a madrassa, or religious learning institute.
© UNHCR/G.M.B.Akash/June 2006

Life in a Refugee Camp:
Children's access to education is a primary concern in refugee camps. Courses offered in these schools normally follow the curriculum in the refugees' country of origin, using familiar languages of instruction. In countries where repatriation cannot be foreseen in the immediate future, consultations are then held among host governments, refugee representatives and UNHCR to see if a "mix" of subjects incorporating elements in both the studies programs of the countries of origin and the host government can be offered to the refugee children. Unfortunately, the programs for children are the first to be cut when a lack of funding compels UNHCR to cut down on assistance programms. Sometimes, the even stage is reached that only ?life-sustaining activities? can be carried out in the camps.
