"Equipping our young people with the skills they need to fulfil their potential is at the centre of our regeneration plans for Tottenham, and this studio will help raise aspirations as much as transform an empty building.
Executive Chairman of John McAslan + Partners, John McAslan said:

"By offering essential training and excellent opportunities for work experience, together we will raise Tottenham's profile throughout London as a highly desirable location in which to study, work and live."

Haringey Council has already secured more than £1billion of investment to support the long-term regeneration of Tottenham, with major construction work already underway to bring 10,000 new homes and 5,000 new jobs by 2025.

Jake, who recently turned 19, enrolled at the Football Academy in 2013 and is studying for his NVQ in Fitness and Exercise Instruction. As goalkeeper for the team he said: “My advice to others is don’t fail through lack of effort. It’s not all about talent. If you’ve got a good work ethic and always give 100% you can still make the team.”

Jake travelled to Italy in May of this year and in the last few minutes of the match he cleared a free kick preventing Italy from winning the game. Although the team didn’t win any of their international games, Jake was really proud to help earn his team a draw.

When Jake is not playing football he enjoys coaching the Little Arsenal Community. He’s still working towards his plans to play in the Premier League one day, and we wish him every success.

College Director for Sports, Kurt Hintz, said: “Jake’s achievement demonstrates how hard work, determination and commitment are the recipe for success rather than just raw talent. We are pleased with his success both academically and in football and wish him every success for the future.”

The club has produced eight England College and Schools capped players, three of these in 2012.
The Club also has a recognised partnership with Premier League, Reading Football Club and has contacts throughout the non-league and professional game, which have led to Academy players being professionally signed and winning Football Scholarships in the USA.

The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London was proud to take part in the Arriva London Tottenham Garage Centenary Celebrations on Saturday (20 July). To mark the historic occasion of serving the local population for the last hundred years from 1913 to 2013, Arriva sponsored a Fun Day on Tottenham Green.

Out in force to promote Summer Enrolment, the College was giving away a free pair of sunglasses to anyone who successfully completed one of two challenges, set by our Schools of Construction and Sports. The first challenge was to move a metal hoop around a looped piece of copper tubing without touching it. Even the slightest touch sets off a loud buzzer making this a really tough challenge to complete. The second challenge was the ‘reach test’ which involved seeing how far you can reach in a sitting position. Crowds of local people tried each challenge and were delighted to wear their prized sunglasses on such a lovely day, and on what could turn out to be one of the hottest and sunniest summers on record!

Allan Southgate Tottenham Bus Garage Manager said: “The Centenary marks 100 years of the Arriva bus garage serving the local Tottenham community. That’s why we got the local community involved in the celebration. We also want to play our part in making sure that Tottenham is a happy and strong community.”

There was a great atmosphere at the Fun Day with free rides on a vintage Routemaster 76 to Waterloo and back, vintage police cars, bouncy castles for the children and a disco provided by Mystic Radio, a steel band, musical performances from reggae artists Yisrael and Ras, and many community information stalls for everyone. There was a serious side to the celebrations too, and the organisers and all stallholders were collecting funds for the North London Hospice.

Jane O’Neill Acting Principal and Chief Executive at the College, said: “It’s very important to get involved in and support our local community wherever we can. Attending events like the Fun Day gives the College the opportunity to promote summer enrolment and our courses to local people, which lead to jobs and successful careers.”

Kurt Hintz, Curriculum Director, said: “I am pleased that the council and the North London Chamber of Commerce gave us the opportunity to host the Employment Fair, which is an excellent initiative for the community that we serve. We will continue to work with apprentices and equip them with the skills they need to attain suitable employment.”

18 year old Jordan Cornelius has just received a three year sponsorship with the College of Southern Maryland where he will study Sports Psychology and play for the college’s football team.

The sponsorship will pay for his tuition, food and accommodation for three years after which Jordan will decide whether to come back to England or pursue a professional career in America.

Joining the PASE Football Academy in 2011, which is partnership between the College and Boreham Wood FC, Jordan was not the most outstanding player, however with hard work and determination he was selected by a scout earlier this year and will travel to America in July.

While playing for the Academy, Jordan studied for his Sports BTEC Level 3 at the College, which allowed him to gain the qualifications he needed for higher education.

Gaining a qualification while playing for the Academy is mandatory and aims to give the players the skills and qualifications they need if they don’t have a career in football.

Jordan started playing football aged nine before he was selected to play for Queen’s Park Rangers. During his last year at school he was dropped by the Club so began looking for alternatives. His PE Teacher gave him information about the College’s football academy and as he had an interest in studying sports it was the perfect option. Now, after two years at the club, he has improved dramatically and recently played his final game for the season as captain of the English College Reserves Team.

Jordan said: “I’m excited about going to America. It’s a big change for me but a good opportunity. I’m sure it’ll be hard work but the Academy has trained me for it so I’m prepared and looking forward to it.”

Director for Sports, Kurt Hintz, said: “Jordan’s achievement demonstrates how hard work, determination and commitment are the recipe for success rather than just raw talent. We are pleased with his success both academically and in football and wish him well in his continued education and football in the USA.”

Jordan follows in the footsteps of Charlie Hunter who gained a US sponsorship last year.

The students took part in workshops about exercise, takeaway and regular meals, healthy snacks, food labels and making better food choices.

Together they produced the six-minute ‘Eat better Move more’ podcast aimed at 16-19 year olds, which shows how small changes make a big difference by cutting down on junk food, walking more and eating fruit and vegetables.

The podcast is available to students on Ezone, the student intranet, and may be used in a larger campaign later in the year.

18 year old Health and Care student, Dionne Mungombe, said: “It was very interesting to learn about healthy eating and how what we eat and do now will affect us later in life. It’s a great knowledge to have and definitely something I’ll be sharing with my family and friends.”

Vice Principal of Curriculum and Learner Experience, Jane O’Neill, said: “This project raised awareness among students in a fun and creative way, and is something they will benefit from for the rest of their lives.”

The students who consist of Pathway to Employment students, which is a course to help young people with supported learning needs prepare for work, entered as Team Logik and walked away with a finalist trophy and Best Sales Team trophy.

Entering the competition with a selection of beautifully crafted handmade bags and iPhones cases made from recycled clothing, the team worked hard designing, creating, organising and carrying out market research, as well as learning sales and finance skills.

During the competition, the students received praise from the judges for their sales techniques, accurate pricing and market research, which they witnessed earlier in the year when the team sold their products at the Old Spitalfields Market.

The judges also showed a keen interest in the attractively produced catalogues showing clear photos of the individually designed bags and iPhone cases, as well as a step-by-step guide on how they were made.

Student, Alex Temple, said: “We are really happy we won, we made lots of products and worked really hard.”

Course Tutor, Alison Meeds, said: “This is the second year running we have won a Young Enterprise Team Programme Award which shows how much the students are benefiting from the support and training they are receiving at the College. They have done an amazing job and shown they have the skills and drive to succeed. I’m extremely proud of them and look forward to developing more initiatives with Team Logik.”

The students will be selling the products to staff and students at the Tottenham Centre every Tuesday until the end of July between 12.30 – 2.30pm.

Music technology students, singers Jayd’n Noel and Shari Kellman said of their experience: “We’ve really grown in confidence since we started the course and the hours of rehearsal have paid off. We feel so at home on stage now!”

Artists, family and friends moved amongst the spot lit displays of striking paintings, sketches and illustrations, just a few feet from where musicians performed in a wide variety of musical styles. From Rap to RnB, Indie to Soul and experimental to abstract, their common bond was an appreciative audience of music lovers enjoying entertaining and accomplished performances.

Performance and DJ sets alternated with screenings of Animation and Media shorts. Every film genre conceivable was represented from comedy and drama to thriller and zombie horror.

Upstairs, Games Development students had built a series of booths screened off by displays, for visitors to try their hand at beating their games.

James Charlton and Billy Teagle-Storey and Richard Lucas and Ricky Kyriacou demonstrated ‘one player shooter games’ designed on Unity 3D Animation Software.

Off to Teesside University to study Games Programming, in September their classmate Gary Shilton is going to Hertfordshire University to study Game Art ad 3D Modelling. “I love drawing” said Gary “and my ambition is to become an artist rather than a programmer.”

Other Level 3 students are staying at College to complete their HNC and HND study, which is equivalent to the first and second year of a degree and works out much cheaper than paying university tuition fees.
Frances McGowan said: “I want to progress to degree level study but I don’t feel university is the right fit for me just now. I can top up my HNC and HND to a degree by going to university for my final year.”

Carlos Lopez and Joshua Nsubuga, who are also aiming for the College’s HNC and HND route to success, have just completed work with Circle Sports, a sports development initiative for young people.

Carlos and Joshua designed mascots for the organisation to use in their marketing. Carlos’ idea of two llamas on bicycles, one male, one female won the overall competition and Carlos will develop his idea further for Circle Sports.

Carlos said: “I went to Japan earlier in the year because that’s the centre of the games industry. Once I have my degree, I want to work there.”

The show closed with a tribute to everyone who had exhibited and special thanks went to Melda Mahmutoglu, Dominic Esprit, Michael Elesheku and Victoria Ardamatskaja who won the ‘Animated Exeter’s Young Ones under 18s Animation Award’ earlier in the year.
