This week our school is holding a Case Competition with a number of schools from around the country competing. I am part of our school’s 5 person team, but as the fifth member of the team I only get to sit and watch the presentations without actually participating. I can’t participate unless something happens to one of our other team members. I still think it’s pretty cool to be a part of and I’m seeing a lot of very cool presentations.

How it works is that each team is given a case study and they have 3 hours to read it, analyze it and make a presentation to a panel of judges with their decision for what the company should do. There are 2 initial rounds where everyone competes, then on the final day the 3 top teams are chosen and they are given a case with only 2 hours to prepare and compete for a chance to win the competition. Last year our team came third, so I’m hopeful we can better that position.

I will get another chance in a few months when we travel to Boston to compete in another case competition. I’m hopeful I can crack the starting line up for that event.

Good Luck to our team!

I don’t know what most people’s intentions are when they begin a university education, but my goal is to get a job when I’m finished. At Bizniz School Online we focus on application-based education versus theory-based. That means that we work on the practical things that get stuff done, rather than just learning about models, theories and possible ideas that might work.

When I’m finished I think this will be far more helpful in getting me a job because an applied education is far more like having experience than just an education. All I hear from a number of graduates is that they get out in the job market and constantly hear from people that employers want people with experience. With the amount of case studies that I have completed I feel that I have a greater understanding of what to do in situations and that I almost have that real world experience.

Needless to say, I’m happy with my education thus far!

I am currently in the middle of Spring Break and I am having a rockin time in Mexico. I decided to come down to Mexico for a little sun and fun with a group of friends. The Spanish classes I have taken as a part of my Communications program have really come in handy while trying to pioneer my way around the streets of Puerto Vallarta.

I have been thinking a bit about my future while lying on the beach here in Mexico. I have seriously been considering the option of continuing on to grad school after I finish my bachelor’s degree. I need to figure out whether it is better to have on the job experience first or just go on and do grad work. I have even been considering working and taking a few courses online towards my Masters degree. It is getting so competitive in California that a bachelor’s degree is really the bare minimum needed to land a great job. Ah, but enough about my future, I need another margarita!

I’ve always enjoyed watching our US athletes perform so well for our country, especially under such imense pressure. I’m really hoping that we can overcome the Canadian dominence of hockey and take gold!

The problem I have this year is that the same time that the Olympics I have a ton of school to do. Not that it’s any different than any other time of year while I am in school, except that the Olympics will distract me from my studies. I’m also disappointed that I can’t sit around like a couch potato and watch every event, like I did for the 2000 Winter Olympics.

Anyway, I still love the Olympics and hope they live on for a long time.

For example, we are currently electing a class representative for our cohort. In almost any other circumstance this probably wouldn’t seem odd, but in an online environment I don’t see the point. It’s not like we interact with each other in a school environment or vote to decide whether we pay fees or buy anything as a cohort.

Maybe I’m just not educated enough yet or too focused on school to want to bother with politics.

Ollege out!
Current Mood: Voting ’cause it’s important, but without reason.

I am reading a book right now entitled ‘Guerilla Publicity’ for one of my communications classes. The book goes into all kinds of ways that people and businesses can promote themselves for free. The author suggests joining networking clubs, becoming friends with people in the media, and even giving your business card to someone as random as your dentist.

As a future communicator I sometimes struggle with the whole ’schmoozy’ aspect of promotion. I don’t want for people to feel used, yet it is nice to have free promotion. So what are you supposed to do? I suppose the only thing that a person can do is be honest and genuine even when you are looking for free publicity.

Well, I am going to be honest and genuine right now…. I am excited for the weekend! It is time to let loose, put down the books for a while and enjoy some quality time with my friends.

Man, it’s amazing how even being sick for one day can really set me back in my school work. On Saturday night I woke up feeling awful, it must have been the flu. I’m just starting to feel better today, but it really screwed up my week.

I have a routine with my online schooling, I do my reading early on in the week, like Monday or Tuesday and then I begin all the other work, like participating in online discussions and writing papers, in the second half of the week. So, being that I was sick I now have 150 pages to read, a class discussion to participate in, based on the readings, and a paper due for Sunday.

Also, since I missed work on Monday I’m now trying to catch up on the week’s work, meaning I may have to do a little overtime here and there.

I guess it is good that I’m studying online though, because otherwise I would have missed a class, this way I can make up the time.

All this, just for one day off. I really can’t afford to be sick anymore.

Ollege Out!
