Be Rich in the Right Way

1 Timothy 6:17-19 identifies three things for us to think about as we consider how we handle our money. “Rich,” “riches,” “richly,” and “to be rich” are used so closely together that it is clear that Paul is trying to make an important a point about money. There is a caution, a contrast, and a choice when it comes to “riches.” Each of them relate to how we view our money, ourselves and God.

Fight the Good Fight

Our text today is an intense passage. This final charge from Paul has three aspects to it that serve to impress upon Timothy the urgency of his task. Paul reminds him 1) who he is, 2) what he is to do, and 3) who he is to live for. While this text is primarily addressed to Timothy and to pastors in general, there are some things for all of us to learn and consider.

Contentment in a Materialistic World

1 Timothy 6:6-10 takes us to the question of contentment and how money can be a deterrent to true contentment. The sermon is entitled "Contentment in a Materialistic World" by contrasting contentment with money desires. The passage breaks down into two major sections - understanding how to be content and understanding the dangers of money

Beware of the Subtleties of Pride

Our text today, 1 Timothy 6:1-5, shows us two different expressions or examples of the danger of spiritual pride. Paul gives instruction here regarding two groups of people: slaves and false teachers. In the case of slaves, he shows us how the gospel creates humble obedience to believing and unbelieving masters. In the case of false teachers, he shows us the root and fruit of pride in the lives of false teachers. So let’s see how Paul applies the gospel to these two groups and then heed the warning for our own lives.

Caring for Those Who Care for the Church

The Great Reversal: How the Resurrection of Jesus Christ Changed Everything!

Today I’d like to talk with you about the “back-story” of Easter, probably the most significant Sunday that the church celebrates each year. But why? What is so significant about this day?

The text today is very brief, but it gives us a very important – an eternally important – truth about what lies beneath Easter. It tells us the story behind the story when it comes to Easter.

How Should We Treat People?

Our verses today introduce us to the way in which people in the church should be treated, and there is a noticeable theme of “family” that develops. There is a clear sense that while the church is made up of different kinds of people from various walks of life, the people in the church should view one another as though they were connected in a very special way.

The Ten Commandments of Pastoral Ministry

Pastoral ministry is, by its very nature, personal, and it is hard, at times, to remember what the basics, or non-negotiables, really are. Timothy 4:11-16 is so incredibly helpful – for me, for our pastors and elders, and for you as a congregation. In the midst of crisis and challenges, Paul gives Timothy a series of commands that should frame his pastoral ministry.
