Maryknoll Essay Contest for 2013

The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers are offering students in grades 6-12 the opportunity to compete in an essay contest for prizes ranging from $150-1,000.

Students are divided into two groups (grades 6-8 and grades 9-12) for the purposes of the competition, with 3 prizes awarded to each group.

Most of the instructions and rules are as follows:

"Write an essay explaining what it means to serve the poor and how you see it happening—or not happening—in our world. Give examples from your own life or the lives of people you know or have heard about. Examples must be true.

RULES: Students in grades 6–8 (Division I) and grades 9–12 (Division II) qualify. Entries must be written in English. Only one entry per student. Please specify the division to which the entry is being submitted. Children of Maryknoll employees, Associates and Affiliates are not eligible.

LENGTH: 500–750 words. Pages should be typed and double-spaced or neatly handwritten in ink and stapled. Note: Spelling and grammar count.

DEADLINE: Entries must be postmarked no later than Friday, Nov. 15, 2013. "

Another promotional scholarship that might be worth a look is open now at ScholarshipPoints.com. As I
understand it, students simply sign up (giving a pretty fair amount of personal information) and earn points for online activity, which increase their odds of winning a scholarship.

"Members earn points for doing what they already do online: shopping, reading blogs, playing games, searching the web, taking surveys, and more! The more you do–the more points you earn–the more chances you have at winning a scholarship."

What student must balance is the chance to win a scholarship vs. the privacy given up in the process. For those willing to make the trade this is a chance to win $10,000 in December, and an unmentioned amount on September 30th.

The nearest deadline is September 30, 2013, but if I understand correctly, this is an ongoing opportunity. You can find more information or sign up at ScholarshipPoints.com.

CoffeeforLess.com Hit the Books Scholarship 2013

This scholarship is interesting for a number of reasons. First, it's clearly promotional in nature. When you visit the scholarship page on the CoffeeforLess.com site, they are very clearly promoting their products.

In addition, this seems to be an essay contest with a twist. As regular readers know, I like pure essay contests. They offer a chance for all students to compete on an equal footing (as the essay is the sole criteria). It doesn't seem that is the case here (see bolded text below).

"Eligible students will be aged 18-25 and enrolled in an accredited college or university.* Candidates will have the opportunity to compete once in January and again in September for the scholarship, but will only be eligible to win the scholarship once. The “Hit The Books Scholarship” will award one student up to $500 dollars to be used for educational books and materials.**

In order to be considered for the scholarship, candidates should submit an essay of no more than 500 words on the subjects of the importance of education in their lives and how the scholarship money will assist the students’ goals. Bonus points will be awarded to those students who find a creative way to include their passion for coffee within their essay without losing sight of the primary topic.

Franklin University has a blog with some very interesting posts. One I really like has to do with finding resources to help pay for college. If you've read my scholarship guide (see those links at the top of the page?) some of these will sound familiar.

"Resource #1: Federal Student Aid Scholarship Listings & Information
Scholarships are gifts that don't need to be repaid. Lucky for you, the federal government has all the information you need about what kinds of scholarships are available to you, how to find them, how to apply, when to apply, and whether or not a scholarship will affect your other financial aid. Visit http://studentaid.ed.gov for more information.

Resource #2: Your State Government Your state government likely has online resource(s) in place that will provide information about grants, scholarships, and other financial aid available from the state for college students. These online resources often include federally-supported state programs. For a listing of state-based scholarship and grant resources, you'll want to visit the State Grant Agency at ED.gov.

Resource #3: (I find no clear link in the original article. What I do find doesn't look too useful. You be the judge.

Resource #4: Scholarships & Grants From the College You Want to Attend
It is often the case that colleges fund scholarship and grant programs with their own monies. To find out what might be available to you, visit the college website and search for financial aid, scholarships, and grants. See what you can find online, then supplement that information by getting in touch with a financial aid advisor at your school. They can point you in the right direction – it's their job."

#4 is great advice. If you're high school student it's equally important to check with your school counselor for locally offered scholarships.

The federal student aid office offers some good advice relative to avoiding scams that is definitely worth checking out. Just a few of my thoughts on these last three links. To be safe while seeking funds for college:

Never pay to apply for a scholarship. (Not even a small fee for processing.)
Be jealous of your privacy. No one needs your social security number when you apply for a scholarship (although they may need it to pay you).
When borrowing money be every careful about all loans. You may be paying them back for 10-25 years!

Fastwebs's $2,000 Go Bananas Scholarship

OK, so scholarship actually means sweepstakes in this case What does that mean to you? Two things. First is that fastweb is hoping to get something out of this. What do they want? A little bit of information about you they might already have, and a "like" on Facebook. That seems fair for a shot at $2K that will take a couple of minutes.

The second thing it means is that you could almost enter in the time it took to read this post. (OK, an exaggeration but you can enter really quickly!)

AFSA Scholarship for 2013

The AFSA Scholarship program is a chance for high school seniors to win one of ten $2,000 scholarships to help pay for college or trade school. To make it even better, the application process is EASY! How easy? How does a ten question open book test sound?

AAA South Jersey Scholarship Program Essay Contest

The AAA South Jersey Scholarship Essay Contest is a chance for one a senior to win a $5,000 scholarship.

"The contest is open to all high school seniors attending school in Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester or Salem counties. Entry forms are available at AAA South Jersey offices in Voorhees, Sewell, Logan Township and Millville. Click here to download. The deadline for entries to be received by AAA South Jersey is March 30.

For the contest, students are required to write an essay of between 500 and 1,000 words in response to the question:

Teens are well aware of the dangers of texting and driving, yet the use of these devices continues. What additional measures can be taken – either by car manufacturers, cell phone manufacturers, service providers, law enforcement or other organizations – that would stop teens from using their phone while driving? On a personal level, what would prevent you and your friends from texting and driving?"

Do we really need someone to fix everything for us?

But, that aside, this is a chance for someone to win some serious money for college. Also, teens should note that while the area restrictions are a problem of you live outside the south jersey area they work to your advantage if you live inside the area by limiting your competition.

The Keep the Drive High School Journalism Awards offer students age 13-18 a chance to compete for prizes of up to $2,000.

The DoSomething.org Bully Text Scholarship for 2012 offers students a chance to win $2,000. The contest is open to students aged 25 and younger who are residents of United States and Canada.

Coca-Cola Scholarships for 2012-2013

The Coca-Cola Scholars Program offers U.S. high school seniors the chance to compete for one of 250 merit based scholarships (200 are for $10,000 and 50 are for $20,000).

Applications are begun online by October 31, 2012. Semifinalists complete another application in January, and finalists go to Atlanta in April for interviews.

The great news is that there are many scholarships awarded, and the amounts are large. The bad news is that this competition is extremely competitive. I would not even considering applying if I was not in the top 5% of my class and/or truly outstanding in some way.
