As a finance major graduate from the best university in China, it is natural for me to regard an executive  position in the banking industry to be the ultimate career goal. But my ambition goes beyond that. I want my own business. I have this in my mind partially attributed to some entrepreneur courses I’ve taken in the university. The most impressive one is Introduction to Commercial Science instructed by four MBAs from Ivey Business School (University of Western Ontario). In the class, we simulated operating a manufacturing company by developing and adjusting its business strategies according to the continuously changing market situation. Finally, our study group achieved the highest turnover and net profit. I began “Business Minds Meet Here. We Succeed Together!” to realize that operating my own business could probably utilize my capabilities better than just working in a famous company waiting for being promoted. From then on, starting my own business has become exactly my career goal. 

But after an unsuccessful one year at the start-up firm as mentioned in Essay 1, I realized that I needed to master a wider range of skills added to my 2.5 years audit experience at KPMG. An open financial market and fair government policies for foreign investment banks as well as private-owned firms are also key prerequisites for my goal. All these can be achieved through a two-year elite MBA program, a few years work experience in a leading investment bank like Lehman Brothers, my former employer, and China’s fulfilment of its WTO commitment on opening its financial market. Then I will be sufficiently equipped to start my partnership in a suitable environment. I just ended my translator job at Lehman and rejoined KPMG to improve my international financial practice that will help achieve my short-term goal to seek a banker position in a world-class investment bank after graduation.

This first tip for writing college application essay is to be yourself.  Per my understanding, this point should be most important aspect out of all you should care about. This second tip for college application essay is to be interesting. Every year, many strong applicants fail not because their background is not good, not because their score is not high. They just could not present their essays in an interesting way. Admission officers have go through hundreds of thousands of essays. They are so bored and insensitive to what you write in the essay. If you hope to impress them, you have to be interesting.

The third tip for college application essay is never to tell a lie. Many applicants are tempted to brag to some extend or to tell something that does not happen. These applicants think it is impossible for admission committee to know about details.  But believe, don’t do this. It is definitely not worth it. Every admission officer has interviewed hundreds of application. They really know where applicants may brag. They are very good at asking right question to find if you are not honest. You would definitely betray yourself because they are so experienced but you are not.  You could make it unless you are born liar.

Please note that each "round" represents a distinct period in which you may apply, not a succession of steps for your application. You may apply in one round only, one time in an application year.

Given past experience, we anticipate that many candidates will submit their online application materials very close to 12 noon on submission deadline dates. To avoid heavy server traffic and potential delays, we encourage candidates to submit application materials as early as possible.

Applications received after 12 noon on October 3, 2011 will be considered in Round 2. Applications received after 12 noon on January 10, 2012 will be considered in Round 3. Applications received after 12 noon on April 10, 2012 will not be considered.

When Should I Apply?

To avoid overwhelming server traffic generated by the high volume of applications we receive, candidates are encouraged to submit their application as early as possible prior to the deadline of each round.

We encourage applicants to apply in the first or second round, as space in the class may be limited by the third round. In addition, applying in the earlier rounds will give candidates more time to address the following:

• International candidates needing visas will find that applying in Round 3 makes the timing of their visa application stressful.

When I was a freshman, I had been the queen of balls. I was good at dance from tango, cha-cha to disco. After I worked, I often go to disco bar. I like to jump the stage and lead dancing. My craze and passion always impress my friends. My vigor brought me a colorful life and also inspired others’ lives.

During university, as a vice monitor of my class, I created our class magazine, organized our football team and helped establish three student clubs. I encouraged the morale of our football team, the weakest one in the whole freshmen football games and eventually won the champion. Our team made the miracle and became unbeatable one. I also built up my confidence in my leadership. Afterward, I founded the Speech and Oratorical Society Club in the university and had more than 300 members. As a cultural emissary, I led the exchange students from U.S., Japan and South Korea to tour Beijing and shared with them the Chinese culture. My eventful university life made me many friends and also improved my leadership skill.

When I worked in ABC, I originated the Youth Club, the first club in our agency. I used the club to organize weekend-trip out of Shanghai. This is the first activity which spans different departments. I broke the boundary of departments and created team spirit. The open communication and the relaxing recreational activities made us into one big family. I also wrote a proposal to encourage all staff to donate to Project Hope – a charity project to create opportunities for underprivileged children. The proposal was praised by our president and I received many letters for thanks. Most importantly, more than 20 children could go back to school because of our help.

In addition, my unique family background made an important impact on me. Born in a media family, I inherited my parents’ courage and enthusiasm stemming from their profession and knew about media industry very early. Both of them are very passionate and optimistic. My father won the First National Best Journalist Award in 1984, which is the top award in Chinese journalism. My mother, a senior editor in a children magazine, never regarded me as a kid. My mother often gave me some opportunities to edit some articles for pupils, when I was in the primary school. In my mind, they are not my parents but my good friends.

Due to my parent’s job, moving house was an ordinary thing. Such experience has shaped my communicating skills and the adaptability to changes. Since one year old, I have begun my “nomadic life” with my family. I have lived in five cities in China, and transferred eight schools. Although I felt frustrated for leaving my old friends and different dialects hindered me from talking with others, I could adapt to the unfamiliar environment very quickly. I learned to observe and judge other’scharacteristics. I could distinguish who was easily approaching and possible to be my friends. No more than one week I went to a new school, I had already became very active and got along well with my new classmates. I benefited from my ability to the judgment of human beings after I worked. As a reporter, I have to communicate with strangers very frequently. The profession helped me be more skillful to treat different people in the different ways or motivate people with different personalities. I am happy that throughout my life so far, I have done things out of the ordinary. It has given me great satisfaction and the yearning to reach for even greater things. Wharton will be the key to the doors that I want to open. I will bring my passion to Wharton. I dare to dream, I dare to try and I will make a difference.
