After hearing the tragic news of future Hall of Fame linebacker, Junior Seau – committing suicide, it not only brought tears to my eyes to see such a successful man falter because of the mental instability that was caused by the sport he loved, but it also made me reflect on the student-athlete development we studied at the University of Oklahoma. At the time of the educational course at OU, I did not think much about the material we were learning, but now that I have been out of high level athletics for 5 years, I understand what athletes go through upon retirement from the only world they knew, which in my case was the sport of golf.

The average person cannot understand without going through the athletic experience themselves. A typical athlete from a NCAA D1 athletic program, was most likely the stand out or phenom from their home town. It is a celebrity status around down, which makes the kid feel as though he is invincible and can get away with anything just because he has a special talent on the playing field. There are many problems that arise with this kind of preferential treatment that young student-athletes receive.

With Junior Seau – my personal all time favorite player – committing suicide, I realized the psychological struggles all athletes go through – even if they didn’t play football and suffer concussions. The hardest struggle to overcome is what can be called “self identity crisis”. This refers to how one perceives himself or her self worth. When a child is being told how great of an athlete they are from such a young age, they see themselves primarily as just a “great quarterback” and don’t see any other talents in themselves. A lot of golfers that I grew up with are still struggling on the mini tours, living out of their cars, because they simply don’t think they can do anything else unless they make it on the PGA Tour. At the University of Oklahoma, football players come from various walks of life, but all have one thing in common – they were the star athlete from their respective town. The only problem is that only 22 guys start a football game for OU outside of the special teams, and OU carries 100 guys. That means that roughly 75 guys are not going to see much playing time, changing the perception the public sees them as. This can be detrimental to a young athlete and lead to such things as depression. This depression is not as bad as it will be once their playing days are done for good. As seen in the case of Junior Seau, he couldn’t handle the normal lifestyle after retirement from the NFL with over 20 playing seasons. With millions of dollars in the bank, Junior still struggled with finances among other things, which eventually led to him taking his life and leaving behind many friends and family members to clean up his mess.

There are thousands of cases such as Junior Seau. What we are trying to do with “The Student-Athlete Foundation” is show young individuals there are other options outside of sports. As the NCAA commercial says – “most of us will be going pro in other professions other than sports”, our advisors show them avenues on how to use their athletic talents to benefit their lives and future careers outside of sports.

RIP Junior

With the recent success of players from the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation in South Africa, it excites everybody at Collegiate Athlete Consultant and The Student Athlete Foundation, because of the endless opportunities that we have for our young athletes.

For those of you unfamiliar with EEFF, it is a not for profit foundation started by PGA Tour future hall of famer, Ernie Els. Their mission statement “To identify talented young South Africans predominantly from families of
limited resources and provide them with educational and life-skill assistance
and playing opportunities in order to produce successful, well-rounded
and educated young golfers.” Recently, Louis Oosthuizen, fell just short at this years Masters Golf Tournament, but this is after he won the 2010 British Open and other professional events on the European Tour. Last Sunday, Brendan Grace of South Africa won his third European Tour event, and is now considered on of the best young players in the world. Both of them say without the help of Ernie Els and his foundation, none of this would be possible.

At The Student Athlete Foundation, our goal is simple – help as many high school athletes as we can achieve their dream of playing college athletics, and earn a college degree. Through the foundation we will be able to change so many young lives through athletics and provide opportunities for their future, that they may not have had otherwise. Our goal is to help all athletes that come from various demographics have the best opportunity of achieving their dreams and providing a better life for them and their families.

College recruit websites made simple and cheap!

At Collegiate Athlete Consultant we have seen thousands of resumes and videos from high school athletes that hope to play college sports one day. There are a few key flaws that we see most often, which include: too much information and not the relevant information a coach needs to see in order to declare you are a recruit-able student-athlete. The recruiting video’s we see also tend to be too long, difficult to see what player we are supposed to be focused on, not the skills that are most important to see, or even average to below average plays that should’ve been edited out.

Remember, most times you only have one shot to make an impact on a college coach – and sometimes that good impression needs to be within the first 10 seconds of them looking at your resume and/or video. At Collegiate Athlete Consultant we have developed a team to ensure that our athletes are showing all the right information in the easy format possible. That is why we developed JW Sports Websites. Most recruiting services offer a profile and stick you in a database that coaches (supposedly) look at, we go one step further with giving you your own website so coaches can see all the proper information to put you on their recruiting radar.

Check out Grady Bourguignon, class of 2014 to view what your recruiting website could look like.

Using middlemen in hopes of receiving a college roster spot or scholarship.

There are many camps and combines that are ran by former college coaches and professional athletes. A lot of these individuals have friends that now coach in college athletics. Have you been approached by these camps and combines that tell you they will connect you with the school of your dreams if you attend their camp?

It is our belief, having experienced the college recruiting process as high school athletes, working in college athletics, and now specializing in college recruiting for high school athletes – it does not matter who you know or who your cousin knows, if you are NOT doing the process right, you are going to get left behind.

It is our advice to you – ask these camps and showcases, how do they help you get in touch with their contacts? Do they place a phone call on the behalf of all 400 kids that attend their camp? Do they mass email the coaches the results and evaluation of all 400 kids? How are you going to separate yourself from the competition and get connect with these college coaches?

It is great to have resources that are involved with college athletics, but a connection or simply knowing someone is not going to get you recruited.

Each high school athlete needs a structured, organized framework that shows them exactly how to gain exposure and get recruited. Without this it is going to be very difficult for any high school athlete to set themselves apart from the playing field.

Most families that I have been speaking with over the past few weeks feel as if it is too late for their senior in high school to obtain a college athletic scholarship. While this opinion might be true for NCAA D1 powerhouse schools like USC and Texas, it is not the case for hundreds of other colleges.

Since October 1st I began working with two new clients that are seniors in high school. As of last week they have taken a combined 7 recruiting trips between the two of them and one of the seniors received nearly a full scholarship last weekend when he signed with the school of his choice.

So, from what I have seen first hand, is that it is not too late to pursue your dreams and receive a scholarship for next fall! As you have probably heard me say numerous times, the majority of schools do not have a recruiting budget to find players that would be a good fit for their program. It is up to the student-athlete to show these coaches they exist and would contribute in a positive way for their program.

2011 flew bye, and a new year is steadily creeping upon us! Even though I did not meet every single goal I had for 2011, I accomplished many of my goals simply by creating a plan to chip away at each individual goal on a daily basis. This type of planning not only helps you focus and realize that any goal can be obtained through a daily commitment but it can also help you create personal accountability when no one is watching!

My coach in high school would always tell us that “over a year you are going to get this much better (indicating a few feet with his arms outstretched) and to accomplish this you must get this much better every day of the year (indicating a small inch with his fingers)” I always thought to myself, wow if I want to be on top I have to put in hours every day of the year for baseball; that seemed very tough for me to fathom, considering I always liked some of my off-season time to forget about baseball for a little bit and relax.

But it wasn’t until College that I realized that it was not only the physical part of baseball my coach was talking about, but also about my education, nutrition, rest and accountability. Because every single one of those factors affected my life off the field which in turn affected my performance on the field. Luckily I had some wonderful parents and mentors that helped keep track of those factors I seemed to not always think about.

With the holidays coming up I started to really think about my off-season so far and considered how it has been going, am I doing the little things each day to accomplish my goals for this off-season? Even if you are not in off-season right now, I challenge you with these questions; have you thought about and created a plan for all the little things, away from your physical training, you can accomplish during your offseason to help you get this much better? (Indicating an inch with my fingers) Are you hitting the books to boost that GPA during the off-season? Have you signed up for SAT prep classes to get your SAT score up? Or have you signed up for the SAT yet? Have you picked out your dream school and created on and off the field goals that fit that school?

The NCAA have rules in place that limit the amount of visits a prospective student-athlete can have with colleges they are looking to attend. It is important that the student-athlete is aware of what the rule is pertaining to their graduating class.

First, we will talk about the junior class. As of September 1st of your junior year, coaches are now aloud to accept and return your emails with information regarding their athletic programs. Prior to your junior year coaches are only aloud to send general information and brochures about camps, etc… Although college coaches cannot return your phone calls, it is a good idea to place phone calls to college coaches in attempts to get on their recruiting radar. I recommend that when you leave a voice mail for a coach, you make sure to leave your email address so that coaches can reply to you in some way, since they are not aloud to return your call until July 1st after your junior year. During your junior year you are also aloud to make “unofficial visits” to the college campuses. Coaches are NOT aloud to meet with you off campus, at tournaments, games, combines, etc.. Most recruits are now visiting earlier and earlier to visit campus’ and often make their decisions or “verbally commit” to their favorite school at the end of their junior year.

Seniors are aloud to take 5 “official visits” during their senior year. Seniors are only aloud 3 visits to a particular school. It is highly advised that seniors take the proactive approach and place phone calls to the coaches at the schools they are looking to attend. Many emails and recruiting forms go to spam if you are not on their prospective recruiting list. Just because you are not on their list, doesn’t mean you are not good enough to play at their school. It is most likely because the school does not have the recruiting budget to see every high school athlete that would be a good fit for their program and school.

For all underclassmen it is important that you do everything in your power to get on the college coaches radar at an early age. Although coaches cannot reply or have much contact with you prior to your junior year, you can still send them emails and place calls to these coaches so they know that you exist. They will also be very impressed with how you are being responsible and taking the initiative to contact them. Make sure you prepare before contacting coaches so that you can ask them relevant questions pertaining to the college recruiting process and also be ready to answer any question that they will ask you.

It is important that emails and phone calls to coaches are coming from the STUDENT-ATHLETE, NOT parents or coaches!

Developing into a college caliber athlete takes a lot of hard work and dedication to the college recruiting process. Volleyball provides high school players many opportunities to play at a high level and get seen by college coaches. One way is by signing up to play for a private club team in your area. These club teams can be quite expensive and require additional training, which leads to a lot of time spent at the gym on the volleyball courts after traditional school practice.

Understanding the dedication it takes to play college athletics is very important for a family when trying to pursue playing college volleyball. It is important for the entire family to buy into the process and make sacrifices to ensure that the high school athlete is doing everything they can do to develop into a college caliber athlete. If it were easy to become a college athlete, everyone would be doing it!

While working out of my office at Athletic Republic in Houston, TX I see numerous club volleyball players seeking college recruiting advice through their club coach Often times, the club coach did not play at the college level. If they did, consider yourself lucky because they can offer some insight to the process that most coaches at the high school level cannot. The club coaches can also offer some service in this area but not to the extent that one needs to take advantage of the recruiting process. Sure they might send out a letter here in there with your video, but not much follow up with the college coaches will occur after that. This is where Collegiate Athlete Consultant will come in to ensure the student-athlete is taking every necessary step in the recruiting process. The recruiting process requires the day-to-day attention as does anything else you are pursuing in your daily life. If you are not keeping up with it on a daily basis, scholarship opportunities and roster spots may pass you by!
