May 7, 2008 - Collin College Professor Dr. Rosemary Karr has been named a 2008 Piper Professor, an honor presented annually by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation to professors for superior teaching at a Texas college or university.

The award became official on May 1 and comes with a $5,000 honorarium and a gold pin. Dr. Karr, who teaches developmental mathematics at Collin College, is one of 15 professors statewide to be honored. She is also the fifth Piper Professor to have taught at Collin College. Dr. Karr has been on faculty at the college for 17 years.

"We could not be more proud of Professor Karr," said Dr. J. Robert Collins, chair of the Collin College Board of Trustees. "This is a very prestigious award, and she truly deserves commendation."

The Piper honor follows Dr. Karr's induction last year as the 2007 U.S. Professor of the Year from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

"Dr. Karr has earned many statewide and national accolades, but she is most proud of the accomplishments of her students," said Collin College President Cary Israel. "It is that kind of humility combined with intellect that makes her a great professor. We are delighted to have outstanding professors of this caliber teaching our students."

Dr. Karr graduated Magna Cum Laude from Eastern Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree, and earned a Master of Arts degree at the same university in Mathematics Education. She holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education (Computer Education) from the University of North Texas. She currently serves as president of the National Association of Developmental Educators and has received countless honors for teaching, civic engagement, scholarship and student organization leadership. Prior to joining Collin College, she taught at Eastern Kentucky University. Dr. Karr has a total of 26 years teaching experience at colleges and universities.

According to Dr. Karr, "Carl Rogers once stated 'The degree to which I can create relationships which facilitate the growth of others as separate persons is a measure of the growth I have achieved in myself.' I am grateful for the opportunity to make a difference."

Collin College serves about 44,000 credit and continuing education students annually and offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs. The only public college in the county, Collin College is a partner to business, government and industry, providing customized training and work force development.

Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Takes Home Three Coveted Awards

April 22, 2008 - The Collin College Phi Theta Kappa honor society made a name for itself at the Phi Theta Kappa International Convention in Philadelphia April 3-5.

The Collin College chapter took home the Scholarship Hallmark Award, the Leadership Hallmark Award and the Distinguished Chapter Award.

The Scholarship and Leadership Hallmark awards are given only to 25 chapters. The Distinguished Chapter Award is given to the top 25 chapters in the world.

"These awards are an incredible honor for our Alpha Mu Tau Chapter," Angela Putman, professor and advisor of Phi Theta Kappa, said. "While the benefits of what these students are doing far outweigh the awards, it's wonderful to watch them get rewarded for the incredible effort they put in all year long to the chapter, school and community. I'm extremely proud of all of them."

The college's Phi Theta Kappa chapter competed against 500 other chapters from across the United States and from around the world. With about 1,250 chapters, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest and most prestigious honor society for two-year colleges.

The Hallmark Awards Program is the society's capstone awards competition annually recognizing excellence in programs that promote the Phi Theta Kappa Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship. Exceptional members, officers, advisors, college administrators and chapters are recognized annually at the Phi Theta Kappa International Convention for their achievements.

Membership to Phi Theta Kappa is based primarily upon academic achievement. The organization offers a myriad of opportunities for scholarships, intellectual enrichment and personal development through programs based on the society's hallmarks.

Collin College, UT Dallas Sign Electrical Engineering Agreement

April 15, 2008 - Collin College and The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) are teaming up to better meet the state's need for electrical engineers.

The two institutions have agreed to provide a smoother and more seamless transfer of credits of Collin College electrical engineering students to UT Dallas, where students will then complete their bachelor's degree.

As part of the agreement, the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at UT Dallas will work with Collin College to develop freshman and sophomore engineering courses that specifically meet UT Dallas requirements. Faculty at the two institutions will work together to develop courses in accordance with standards set by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET).

In addition, Collin College faculty will attend ABET workshops and provide lab and equipment exercises.

"The Collin College-UT Dallas agreement promotes an increased level of access and flexibility for Collin College students pursuing an engineering career who ultimately intend to transfer to complete the degree in electrical engineering at UT Dallas," Bill Blitt, dean of the Business, Information and Engineering Technologies division at Collin College, said. "The Collin College-UT Dallas collaboration is an excellent example of institutions collaborating in the design of an agreement where the primary objective is to increase the level of access and impact for students who begin the pursuit of an engineering career at Collin College."

The program is for Collin College students who successfully complete their associate degree in electrical engineering with a grade point average of at least 2.5 and no grade lower than a "C" in an engineering class. Students who meet these requirements will be allowed to transfer 62 credit hours to UT Dallas satisfying the university's core curriculum and any undergraduate electrical engineering courses.

"We look forward to working more closely than ever with Collin College to ensure Texas has the electrical engineers it needs to compete effectively on the world stage in the 21st century," said Bob Helms, dean of the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at UT Dallas. "Reducing health care costs and creating renewable energy sources are two of the top challenges we're facing today, and I think engineers and computer scientists are better prepared than anyone to grapple with those issues."

In addition, according to Blitt, Science Mathematics Advanced Research and Technology (SMART) scholarship opportunities, funded by Texas Instruments, are available to financially support qualified students who elect to complete their first two years majoring in engineering or computer science at Collin College before transferring to UT Dallas. The SMART scholarship awards are worth up to $2,500 a year for two years.

For more information about the agreement between Collin College and UT Dallas, contact Blitt at bblitt@ccccd.edu.

UT Dallas, located at the convergence of Richardson, Plano and Dallas in the heart of the complex of major multinational technology corporations known as the Telecom Corridor, enrolls more than 14,500 students. The school's freshman class traditionally stands at the forefront of Texas state universities in terms of average SAT scores. The university offers a broad assortment of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs. For additional information about UT Dallas, visit www.utdallas.edu.

April 1, 2008 - Two Collin College students are now award-winning poets.

Christina Sharp and Lisa Marie LeGrand, both of Richardson, were named first and second place, respectively, in the National Career Development Association (NCDA) state poetry competition. Sharp's and LeGrand's poems will be submitted for the national competition in April.

The poems stemmed from the activities of National Career Development Month hosted by the college's Career Services and Cooperative Work Experience Department in November. In cooperation with Collin's English Department, 47 poems were submitted by Collin College students and 16 were submitted for state competition.

Sharp's poem "Your Choice, Your Voice" and LeGrand's "Uneven Steps" will be forwarded to national competition.

"I was deeply honored," Sharp, 25, said. "To have even been considered was such an honor, let alone ranking first place among so many wonderfully talented submissions. The written word is so powerful and I can't express how happy I am that there are contests out there just like this that encourage students to be creative."

LeGrand, 45, had been writing poetry since she was a teenager.

"I was excited and happy that someone recognized my work and that I can write," she said. "The judges understood what I was trying to say."

The NCDA's mission is to support career preparation for high school and college students.

Bioterrorism Experts to Speak at Collin College

March 31, 2008 - Bioterrorism has become a real threat in the United States.

Collin College will host a lecture by two bioterrorism experts to discuss that threat from 12:30-1:45 p.m., Monday, April 14, at the Central Park Campus, Room B201, 2200 W. University Drive in McKinney. Speakers Janet Glowicz and Eileen Prentice will present "The Case of the Sickening Salad: Bioterrism."

The event is free and open to the public.

The presentation is based on a real investigation that occurred in Oregon in which a group attempted to disrupt local election by contaminating a salad bar with salmonella. The presentation will include discussion related to verifying that an outbreak is occurring, linking bacteria to a source and discovery of intentional spread. This type of investigation would be detected locally and would rapidly involve state and federal resources. Persons attending will understand the role of the agencies involved in outbreak investigation and how those agencies resources can be accessed.

Glowicz is a registered nurse who earned her master's degree in public health epidemiology from the Health Science Center at the University of North Texas. She has been an epidemiologist in Collin County since 2003 and worked on several interstate outbreaks of illness. She works with the state to implement control measures such as removing contaminated food from distribution.

Prentice has worked at the state and federal levels in microbiological research and testing after earning her bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas A&M University. With the Texas Department of State Health Services, she was promoted to the Biothreat Team where she has implemented various testing procedures for select agents. She currently works on the Collin County Bioterrorism Team.

The event is sponsored by the Academic Affairs division, the Central Park Campus biology department and the Pre-Med/Biology Club.

For more information, contact biology professor Cathy Donald-Whitney at cwhitney@ccccd.edu or 972.548.6717.

College Awarded for Civic Engagement Initiatives

February 22, 2008 - Collin College was named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the second straight year.

The recognition was given by the Corporation for National and Community Service and honors a number of colleges and universities from around the nation.

"We are pleased to be recognized for our civic engagement contributions for a second year and equally honored to be included among this distinguished group of higher education colleagues," Regina Hughes, director of the Center for Scholarly and Civic Engagement, said.

Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

Collin College created the Center for Scholarly and Civic Engagement in 2004 in an effort to foster "intellectual inquiry through collaborative actions focusing on global, national and local issues that enrich student learning, uphold the civic purposes of higher education and build stronger communities."

February 22, 2008 - Guests were greeted with a Parisian scene complete with bistro tables and incredible live entertainment at Saturday evening's 2008 Collin Cabaret sponsored by Collin College and the Collin College Foundation.

The fundraiser, which raised a record of more than $250,000 for scholarships, showcased the amazing talent of more than 20 current and former Collin College dance, choral and music students who performed jazz standards, Broadway classics and offered dynamic dance routines in support of student scholarships.

A highlight of the evening included a commanding performance by 2006 Miss Texas Shilah Phillips, a former Collin College student now enrolled at the University of North Texas. Ms. Phillips' rendition of "I Am Changing" from Dreamgirls provoked thunderous applause and a standing ovation.

The entire Collin College cast of performers united to present a rousing finale with Hairspray's "Can't Stop the Beat."

The show-stopping evening was directed by William R. Park, associate professor at Collin College, whose Broadway credits include The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera, Gus/Growltiger in Cats and Buddy in Sideshow. In addition, Professors of Music David Alexander and Katherine Morgan served as music and choral directors, respectively, and Professor of Dance Tiffanee Arnold, chair of the dance department and artistic director of the Collin Dance Ensemble, served as the dance choreographer. Finally, Professor of Music/Jazz Studies Kris Berg served as the Cabaret Jazz Band director.

David McCall was the Honorary Chair for the 2008 Collin Cabaret. His law firm of Gay, McCall, Isaacks, Gordon & Roberts P.C. served as the lead sponsor of more than 50 sponsors *. The college appreciates the support of all contributors with sponsor partnerships ranging from $2,500 to $30,000.

Collin County Community College District (Collin College) provides a quality education for about 44,000 credit and continuing education students annually and offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs. A crisis of this magnitude encourages us to reflect on the sanctity of life. The college's vigilant commitment to the safety, security and well-being of our students and employees remains strong.

We send wishes of hope and comfort to President John G. Peters, the students, faculty and staff at Northern Illinois University and to the DeKalb, Illinois community during this time of great sorrow.

February 4, 2008 - Safety from violence begins with knowledge, respect and unity of purpose. Collin College is committed to ensuring the continued safety and well-being of our campus community. Thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Violence Against Women, Collin College is confronting the issues of stalking, sexual assault and intimate partner violence head-on through ZERO Tolerance of Violence.

Project ZERO is a coordinated effort to provide education to the student community about the myths and facts regarding this criminal behavior, about resources available for assisting victims and about the recognition and prevention of violence. For Project ZERO, Collin has partnered with two agencies providing exceptional services to Collin County--The Turning Point (formerly the Rape Crisis Center of Collin County) and Hope's Door Shelter and Counseling Center.

The grant mandates an educational component, and we are pleased to launch the inaugural version of Collin's Online Educational Modules located at www.ccccd.edu/zero. It will serve each of us well to review the information available on this website, as it will act to unite us in dignity and respect.

Please contact Sandy Suvannackkham at 972.881.5820 with any questions.
Thank you for being at Collin College. Stay well.

This February's slate of events is themed "Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the Origins of Multiculturalism," in honor of the Harvard scholar who founded "Negro History Week" in 1926 remembering and commemorating the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans.

That week evolved into a month-long celebration.

African American History Month events are free and open to the public.
