Sony put Ad Hoc Party out in Japan originally last November, and ever since then PSP owners in the know have been wondering when they'd stop dragging their feet and put it out in the West. An explanation of what Ad Hoc Party is and how it works from the PlayStation Blog:

Quote:

So, how does adhocParty work? PSP titles with adhoc mode traditionally require you to play within close proximity to each other. AdhocParty takes advantage of the interoperable capabilities of the PSP and PS3 systems. It enables you to play games featuring Ad Hoc mode, such as Gran Turismo and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, over the Internet through the PS3. Your PSP connects to the PS3 via Wi-Fi, allowing you to chat online with fellow gamers in North America before jumping into competition from the comforts of each of your respective living rooms.

In addition to all of its competitive and social gaming features, adhocParty for PSP supports voice chat through the Wireless Headset or PlayStation Eye, offering you a complete and immersive gaming experience only available on the PlayStation platform.

We don't have a date yet, so hopefully "soon" means by the end of the year. The system already works with the US versions of many games as it is, but so far the barrier to using it has been that the entire application is in Japanese. Thankfully, that will soon change.

Fellow colonist jpc_theoneandonly is a soldier currently stationed overseas in one of those miserable hot, arid regions. MrBibbz has graciously volunteered to organize a care package for jpc's platoon. Band Hero is a surprisingly good game that takes the mechanics from the recently released Guitar Hero 5 and uses Top 40 and chart topping songs from over the years. Some people may not like those types of songs though, so they may steer clear of this game. Certainly more pop and bubblegum than its older brother, but this game also reintroduces the fun that I felt GH5 was lacking. An excellent pickup if you like the 65 songs present on the game.

I know, I know. Between Dragon Age, Modern Warfare 2 and the soon to be released Left 4 Dead 2 many of us have forgotten about Borderlands. But i have a feeling that many of us will be returning to Pandora when the 'Zombie Island of Dr. Ned' DLC drops later this month. Gearbox honcho Randy Pitchford spoke to Game Informer about this DLC pack in particular and future plans for the game in general. Of particular note:

- The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned contains about 6-10 hours of new content, with about 50 new quests spread over 5 new dungeons.
- You'll access the island by using the game's fast travel system, even if you have yet to activate it in-game.
- They're working on raising the level cap in the game, but it won't be in this DLC pack, and Gearbox is being coy on when exactly we'll see it.
- Don't expect to see any cosmetic changes to the characters, like custom logos, faces, etc. It would just eat up system power needed for other graphical touches.
- While most of the DLC being planned will add new areas to the game, they would like to use it to also expand upon existing areas, with Old Haven in particular being mentioned.
- There will be Were-Skags.

The 'Zombie Island of Dr. Ned' DLC will be released for the 360 and PS3 on November 24.

From the depths of NeoGaf -- known for discovering and translating gaming news from obscure Japanese websites -- comes word that Nintendo is bringing out a couple of surprises next year. One is a DS sequel to Hotel Dusk: Room 215 called "Last Window". The other is a sort of action-RPG title called "Zangeki no REGINLEIV" and strangely enough features a Cero D rating. Cero D in Japan is the equivalent of an M rating stateside. If this information proves to be accurate, this title would join a very elite few mature-rated games that Nintendo has published (which includes such excellent company as Eternal Darkness on the GameCube). From the discussion on NeoGaf, it would appear that "Zangeki no REGINLEIV" could be a fantasy-style Earth Defense Force game, given that it is being developed by Sandlot.

Everyone knows it at this point, the game sold over 5 million copies in one day when it was released. Critics have been raving and the marketing was huge, everyone knew that the game was set to break records.

But what about the PC version?
No one can disagree to the notion that the PC version was getting a lot of bad press, which might have had an impact on the game's sales... and you can add to that fact the assumption that PC versions of multiplatform games usually do not sell nearly as well as their console counterparts.

Since we won't know until any hard numbers are released, Big Download has spotted an interesting tidbit that offers a not-too-blurry picture of the game's sales volume:

Whether or not they would admit it, executives at game retail giant Gamestop are worried about digital sales taking a bite out of the retail pie. While we're not yet at the point where even a plurality of game sales can be conducted digitally, we will clearly hit that point sometime in the not-too-distant future. Gamestop knows this, and they're trying to figure out how to enter the digital market without prematurely abandoning the physical media. Are you ready for in-store DLC sales?

Starting early next year, a few select Gamestops will begin testing a trial program in which store associates inform customers of DLC availability when buying a title. The customer would be able to buy the content with normal forms of payment, and the content would be waiting on their console when they get home. The details of how those transactions would work are still murky - imagine the headaches trying to read off Gamertags to an associate and hoping they get it into the computer properly - but for it to work on any level it would likely require the cooperation of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.
What's that I smell? An overly long post title just to make a bad, over done joke? Or is it in fact a brilliant way to introduce these new screens from Mass Effect 2. The mid point of a proposed trilogy, ME2 will feature a revamped combat system, new alien races and a replacement for the mildly reviled Mako vehicle. Bioware also wants you to keep your saves from the original game, which will be used to continue the story more organically in the sequel.

Mass Effect 2 will be released on January 26 for the 360 and PC.

Today ain't that day.

While speaking to Variety, Id Software's superstar John Carmack has let slip that their upcoming shooter Rage (slated for 2011-ish) won't have dedicated servers on the PC for multiplayer.

Quote:

It's not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don't think we will have dedicated servers, we won't have to be a pioneer on that.
Logically, it can only be assumed that internet tubes and videocards have gotten only fatter in the past few years, so they can afford to focus on nothing but graphics and P2P netcode now. Everything will take care of itself, kids!

Green, red, yellow, black, white; all the colors you need to make a game. And a little blue, but not much of it. Star Guard is a side-scrolling shooter/platformer, reductive in both aesthetics and gameplay. Its scope is small and does not overreach in any way. What it does, it does well, and while it doesn't break any new ground, it achieves everything it tries to do while managing to feel both nostalgic and new at the same time.

You play a stick figure in a world of simple geometry. You fight small-bit enemies, all of whom are charmingly animated, and you will contend with difficult jumps and timing puzzles. As you can see from the screenshot, everything in Star Guard seems almost luminescent. The simplicity of the environments and characters (plain lines, solid colors) accentuates this tron-like ambiance. It all feels virtual, if that makes sense, and looks even better in motion. It reminded me of those movies from the 80s where stuff that was supposed to be computer generated was hand drawn in a very colorful way.

The sound extends this unique look and completes the game’s overall feel. Perfect, zingy pew-pews; muted, bass-y jumps; and the soft, electronic echo’s of exploding bad guys all gave me this feeling of being plugged into something.

The only reason any of this matters is because the game plays well. It’s fun and fast paced; challenging, yet not impossible. There are nine stages, each of which brings you deeper into the lair of the evil space wizard. Yup, space wizard. I know this because of the charming story text that appears in the background as you progress. These little blurbs are surprisingly interesting and literate; they won’t provide you with any transcendental revelations, but they do help build the world.

Along the way you meet up with friendly cannon fodder that help you fight the wizard’s minions. Strangely enough I was compelled to protect them. Maybe it was the sob story about their homes being laid to waste; maybe it was because they were green like me. Either way, I found these sequences the most engaging. The lower levels felt a bit lonely without them, especially as the difficulty ramped up. Death is handled via a checkpoint system, and respawns are instant. Death won’t stop you, and will barely slow you down.

The final boss, however, will kick you in the nuts until you give up, most likely.

Star Guard is:
- a pitch perfect side-scrolling, shooter/platformer.
- simple, elegant, and a pleasure to play.
- challenging, but not frustrating.
- mac compatible.

While the annals of gaming are populated by a host of games crafted in basements and garages by driven individuals, modern game making has - for the most part - been possible only for the well heeled. Mod tools, Arcade platforms and Flash have made things a bit easier for the dedicated enthusiast, but it's a tough road to hoe without the tools the big boys have. That may be changing.
Epic has released their Unreal Development Kit, a free version of the very popular Unreal Engine 3 which lets any one with a PC and some drive become a game developer at home. Toss on your rose-colored glasses and take a trip with us back in time as we reminisce about days, systems, and games gone by.

Many hands are on deck this week to share a little bit about our roots - the games and machines that got us into PC gaming years (sometimes decades) ago and will keep us there for years to come. Our retro title goes about as far back as it is possible to go, delving into the history and ramifications of Spacewar! Also discussed are the delightful and short Small World, the surprisingly authentic Doom Roguelike, and Abandonia, home to wayward titles from a lost age.

And, of course, the usual smattering of news and commentary (actually, quite a bit of news) to get you through the day. If you happen to subscribe to our iTunes feed and you like the show, head over there and give us a rating, that'd be swell. :)

Without further ado, Immortal Machines presents... Origins.

Hosted & Summarized by Eric [Ravenlock]
Participants are Robert [Trebor], Jacob [MagGnome], Mike [Bandango], and Bryan [Smoof]

Three months ago had you polled PC and console gamers to try and divine the most popular developer in the industry Infinity Ward very well may have come out on top. So very, very much can change in a season.

If all of the other reasons PC gamers have to be mad at the studio over their handling of Modern Warfare 2, now comes this: multiplayer matches in the game will max out a 9 vs 9. While that's one more a side than you get on the console versions of the game, it's vastly less than the average PC first person shooter, and way less than the 25 vs 25 on CoD: World at War (which was developed by Treyarch, not Infinity Ward).

I think the best response to this comes from our own Jackel on twitter:

Quote:

Pretty soon you'll just be buying an empty box for the PC version of MW2 with a picture of the 360 version inside it.

I've promised to be harsh. I've sent open threats to Runic Games that I'll be bitingly critical. But I can't help it. They've cured motion sickness, taken a personal approach to fixing stuck characters, and even released a mod for respending your talent points a day after release. So I'm still making e-hearts at them despite my best efforts to remain jaded and cynical.

Torchlight looks great!

In fact, I'm starting a rumor right now that Runic Games will wash your car, walk your dog, and give you a hug if you buy a copy of Torchlight for everyone on your holiday gift giving list. Because at this point it's plausible. But I think I can suspend that for a bit and get down to brass tacks. My game face is on and I'm emitting a barely audible growl. It's a no-holds-barred street fight between the US note featuring the stoic and wild haired Andrew Jackson versus the triple trouble of the Destroyer, Vanquisher, and Alchemist. So what is better then? What can twenty bones get you that beats Torchlight?

The Twenty attempts flashy graphics as well.

Challenger 1: Keeping the money

While investing in such turbulent economic times can be tricky, one way you can usually count on having money is by not spending it. But then apathy isn't much fun. And Torchlight is. And a musty smelling twenty isn't about to release a fully featured editor any time soon. I mean if they did I'd probably put something inspirational on there. And perhaps a bushy mustache on Mr. Jackson.

An exploded dye pack that warped a stack of $20 bills.

On second thought, if you have something extremely pressing like knee surgery or vet bills for your hedgehog, just go ahead and skip Torchlight for now. But it will be there for you later. When you need it. Late at night when the WoW raids aren't doing it for you it'll be waiting there in Steam for your gaming booty call. Any time you need it. Andrew Jackson cares not for your booty calls. That pretty much decides it.

Winner: Torchlight

Challenger 2: Wardrobe

A Very Dapper Halloween

While it's always a good move to flesh out your wardrobe to include the proper accessories for all occasions, they don't come for free. This bowler and monocle combo set me back the exact same as my Torchlight pre-order so it's a convenient and fair fight, I believe.

I think it's enhanced my overall dapper quotient and the Bowler was a huge success, It was only fun to wear for about a day to confuse the retail worker zombies and other onlookers into thinking I was a man of distinction. We're going on four days now since Torchlight's debut and it continues to haunt my free time, begging me to put just a few more levels on my Destroyer to make him into an even bouncier wrecking ball of doom.

Winner: Torchlight (Which sorely needs the addition of Top Hat and Monocle mode, if I may be so bold)

Challenger 3: Travel

DO NOT break these barrels open... until that whiskey is ready.

All right. Enough slow pitches over the plate here. I'm bringing the heat. One of my favorite leisure activities is travel and living near Cincinnati, there's a bevy of amazing places to visit within the cost of a tank of gasoline.
Pretty quickly, the Maker's Mark Distillery tour stuck as the option of choice. Being a regular rum man, but living in Kentucky, I'll gladly give bourbon its due and set out with my lady friend to see what this quaint stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail has to offer.

It started out promising with no admission price and ramped up to full blown awesome when you're invited to dip you hand into the brewing vats of pre-distilled raw mash Charlie and the Chocolate Factory style. It's a good thing it's not really tasting like bourbon at this time though or I'd have likely gone Augustus Gloop on that bad boy and ended up as a cautionary tale for tour groups everywhere.

Want some Rye? Course you do. Though Maker's uses only winter wheat for a sweeter taste.

The tour rambled on through actual storehouses where they age the liquor to taste and showcased the signature red wax dipping of the bottles. If you weren't at all impressed yet, they ply you with complimentary drinks and chocolates at the end. Seriously.

And while having your pet do many of the annoying tasks that the player is usually stuck doing in an Action RPG is grand and enduring, my dog Ibid never once brought me a drink. Runic has some work to do to catch up in to the Maker's Mark Distillery tour for sheer alcohol content.

Winner: Travel

Challenger 4: The Compromise

When tasked with finding other creative uses for $20, my girlfriend offered the option of me giving it to her. So I did. The result?

Look at that destroyer go!

She bought herself a copy of Torchlight.

Winner: Everyone.

So yeah, buy it already. I promise you won't miss that twenty nearly as much as the fun you're missing out on RIGHT NOW.

So it doesn't sound like your type of game or maybe you hate fun things? Well feel free to give the demo a try. That is if you don't mind parting with $20. Because that's pretty much the net effect of Torchlight. Great game, great price.

Social Gaming, the addictive minigames on Facebook or MySpace, are the darling of the industry right now. In the increasingly profit-scarce PC gaming market, social games like Farmville and Mafia Wars are making money in amounts that belie their relatively modest development budgets. In popular media, social games seem to be the fast track to success. Heck, even Firaxis is getting into the business with their newly announced Civilization Network.

What's not to like about social gaming? Most of them are free to play, (or are at least based on optional microtransactions) family-friendly, have minimal system requirements, and generate advertising revenue for their developers, publishers, and partners. It seems like the perfect solution to PC gaming shrink. Traditional "core" gamers hate the games, accusing them of being simplistic, low-quality, and downright annoying at times, but that could easily be the result of the "core" gamer being a dinsosaur and just not "getting it". After all, a few million registered players can't be wrong...

TechCrunch did some digging and found that not all is rosy in the land of social gaming. In fact, Michael Arrington predicts a social gaming meltdown brought about by it's own corruption.

Quote:

The reason why I call this an ecosystem is that it’s a self-reinforcing downward cycle. Users are tricked into these lead gen scams. The games get paid, and they plow that money back into Facebook and MySpace in advertising, getting more users. Who are then monetized via lead gen scams. That money is then plowed back into Facebook and MySpace in advertising to get more users

Here’s the really insidious part: game developers who monetize the best (and that’s Zynga) make the most money and can spend the most on advertising. Those that won’t touch this stuff (Slide and others) fall further and further behind. Other game developers have to either get in on the monetization or fall behind as well. Companies like Playdom and Playfish seem to be struggling with their conscience and are constantly shifting their policies on lead gen.
The games that scam the most, win.

It's Halloween! Which naturally means that More Than The Sum is obligated to focus on a horror game, and with the very flexible modability of Left 4 Dead (and the impending release of its sequel), there was no other logical choice.

Unfortunately, the two mods that we wanted to focus on for this edition are actually releasing today - Halloween - so we haven't had time to try them out yet. Our report on Cold Case and Dead Before Dawn will comprise Part 2 of the Zombie SPOOKTACULAR, coming soon. In the meantime, we decided to tag-team Death Aboard and Vienna Calling, two popular full user-made campaigns currently available for your zombie-hunting pleasure.

By the time we're done you'll either be so frothing with anticipation for Left 4 Dead 2 that you'll hardly be able to contain yourselves, or so sick of zombies that you'll never play Left 4 Dead again. Let's find out which! On with the show.

DEATH ABOARD: TERROR ON THE HIGH SEAS...?

ERIC: So we decided to start with Death Aboard, because it hints very strongly in its poster and description that it's going to take place on a ship, and zombies on a ship sounds awesome.

MIKE: Which is why it starts in a prison.

ERIC: Right! ....Wait, what?

MIKE: A prison with many conspicuously placed ramps.

ERIC: Yeah, everything in Death Aboard is a suspiciously convenient ramp. That twisted metal fence is a ramp, that pile of debris is a ramp, those planks somebody left against the wall are a ramp... and the first 2? 3? levels of Death Aboard actually have nothing to do with being aboard anything. Except I guess an island with a prison on it. You see the boat in the background from time to time, but mostly you're in a prison yard, and then some prison cells, and then... the prison offices, I guess? I wasn't really clear on what cubicles were doing there, but some of the design for the cell blocks was pretty impressive.

MIKE: What was not impressive was the inclusion of a rather awkward puzzle that felt entirely out of place in the gory streets immediately outside of the prison. Eric and I spent a good five minutes running around like zombies with our heads off trying to figure out what we were doing wrong.

ERIC: Ordinarily I would avoid spoilers, but honestly I feel like we should just explain this one so that if people want to play they don't think it's just broken and restart the map like we did. I mean, the security door - different in no way from any other security door you open in L4D - simply wouldn't work.

MIKE: Seconds before deciding to just skip it and start at the next level, we noticed an out of place wire below a sewer grate just in front of the switch. After a quick trip to the undercity we plugged that bad dad in and were ready for the inevitable flood of zombies that always accompanies security doors and their switching.

ERIC: And Death Aboard has a LOT of security doors. Anyhow, it was actually a pretty clever idea, but when the big arrow is telling you "throw the switch" and the switch doesn't work and there's no indicator telling you to go do another thing first, it just looks broken. The good news is, slightly thereafter you actually do get to the boat, and a sinking boat with zombies is just as awesome as it sounds.

MIKE: Unfortunately, no zombie pirates.

ERIC: I'm undecided on that point. Some of them might have been very casually dressed pirates. They did have bad teeth, and none of them looked like they'd had enough citrus.

MIKE: The boat/pirate ship itself was totally sweet. It was a shipping barge that had been turned on its side, presumably by a very large zombie. Scattered around the deck were the ubiquitous shipping containers required in any good Source mod. They were fertile ground for some very exciting firefights.

ERIC: The boat kicks ass. There are a few actual surprises in there that I don't want to spoil - if you play this mod, play it for the boat. Hell, start on that level. After the boat there isn't a whole lot of noteworthy content, except for....

MIKE: The balloon!

ERIC: You escape on a hot air balloon. Yes, really. Best escape ever. It's like Up! without talking dogs.

MIKE: And more zombies.

ERIC: So that's Death Aboard. Play it for the boat, stick around for the hot air balloon ride. There isn't a ton of awesome stuff, but it's all pretty good, there's only one really sticky design point and the boat rocks. Next, we're off to...

VIENNA CALLING: NO SERIOUSLY, WHERE THE FUCK ARE WE?

MIKE: Welcome to wonderful Vienna: a city of time, of art, of architecture. Visit the magnificent cathedral of Stephansdom. Take in some culture at the Grand State Opera house and the Imperial Court Theatre. Come see the majestic castle-like Gasometers and their ultra sleek sister buildings. Vienna is a feast for the eyes; the Volkstheater, the NeuBurg, the MichaelerTor, the Hofbug, the Karlskirche, the HaasHaus, Donnerbrunnen. A home to elaborate inventions of stone, steel, and glass, true testaments to the very ingenuity of man, Vienna is a mecca of manmade beauty.

ERIC: Unfortunately, approximately 0% of that stuff made it into Vienna Calling. Don't get me wrong, though, I'm not necessarily saying you shouldn't play the mod. It has some of the most batshit crazy level design I've ever seen.

MIKE: Honestly, this mod could have been titled anything from London Calling to Springfield Massachusets calling.

ERIC: True, but if this IS what Vienna is really like, I am totally going there. Their clothing stores sell not only fashion, but also beds and other furniture, and they have carpeted check out lines!

MIKE: And the tunnels of their metro are adorned with nudie posters!

ERIC: I suspect that part may actually be accurate.

....Hot?

ERIC: Seriously though, describing all the weird, seemingly out-of-place stuff in Vienna Calling would require its own article. You will fight through a department store, some catacombs, a train depot, a toxic waste river, a construction site, some weirdly suburban areas, and an extremely special gas station.

Catacombs! Spooky.

This manhole cover - on the street - had a hardwood floor and a vending machine under it.

Streetsigns are pretty much the only reason to believe you're in Europe.

Well, okay, stuff like this too, I guess.

MIKE: Except you won't actually fight through any toxic waste; you'll fall in it and die immediately. Which I did. Along with our AI partners who seemed magnetically attracted to the stuff.

ERIC: Yeah, unfortunately, some parts of Vienna Calling pretty much require a full 4-man complement, because the AI programming simply can't handle the level design. I can't necessarily call it a knock against the mod because the parts in question are pretty cool, but it's kind of a bummer. The mod definitely has some pretty exceptional set pieces.

MIKE: One in particular took place inside a ruined train terminal. I won't say too much, but I will say this: counter terrorist zombies.

ERIC: The almost-final fight outside the gas station (at least it looked like a gas station, there was a ton of propane around) was another highlight. And then the fact that the gas station contains as its safehouse an elevator that goes to a restaurant IN THE SKY. That was the most surreal beginning of a level I think I've played in a long time.

MIKE: Yeah, we stepped outside after what seemed like a 20 second elevator ride and were treated to a complete scenic view of Vienna/Chicago/Dublin.

I'm on top of the world!

ERIC: And then it wraps up pretty quickly. In violent fashion.

MIKE: For me and the AIs at least. The service at this sky restaurant was terrible. They ate US..

Mike serves whoopass from the kitchen.

...I don't even understand what's going on in this room.

ERIC: But seriously, I do recommend this mod, at least as much as I do Death Aboard if not more. I spent most of it confused and disoriented, but I really was having fun the whole time, and some of the stuff they did here was very creative even if it didn't make much sense. The absurdity of the whole thing felt appropriate in a B-horror movie sort of way, as if they wanted to make a zombie movie in Europe but only had access to sets around Cleveland and some foreign posters. ;)

So there you have it, Part 1 of the More Than the Sum Zombie SPOOKTACULAR! If you download either of these mods (which I should mention are VERY easy to install, just double-click the extracted .VPK and you're done), leave us a comment and let us know what you think - also tell us if you've got some favorite Left 4 Dead custom content that we should try.

Once Cold Case and Dead Before Dawn are in our zombie-shooting hands, we'll give those both a run and be back with Part 2 as soon as we can.

Download Death Aboard here, and Vienna Calling here.

It's answers a lot of questions that people have been asking like how you can bring your squads forward but you'll lose the equipment you'd gained in the first campaign. But for me the most important reveal would have to be about the corruption system.

Quote:

Like Dawn of War II, players receive various bonuses and rewards based on their performance in battle. However, there's more of an impact to your players that simply acquiring gear and experience. Thanks to the appearance of the Chaos Marines, your soldiers will find themselves tainted by the corruption on their souls during each mission, which will affect your troops and their abilities. In fact, this adds a new feature to the game represented by a morality bar which indicates how far you've fallen under the chaotic shadow based on your actions. For example, while I jump jetted on top of the base walls, I could have directed my troops to blast through the gate itself, which would have corrupted my forces because they would have left the few remaining defenders open to future attacks from enemies. I was told that each mission that you take on will have variable corruption objectives that you can be presented with, such as not retreating from the enemy or searching the entire map to avoid its effects, and that there would also be different redeeming missions as well.

So not only will we be seeing corruption from the use of equipment but from choices made during the missions! Those of you that have read my comments on the matter before now and especially on the corruption system will know that this was something I was really hoping to see. It's unsurprising to see traditional RPG elements like a moral alignment finding there way in to the game but it is gratifying. It's one element that has always been missing from gameplay mechanics when you have Chaos vs SM. The only unanswered question is if this will have an impact on the story or ending of the campaign.

This is the reason we chose to bring the interview to a close ahead of its natural conclusion, and the interview was the reason for this late posting – we thought it best to give each room to breathe. We had planned to revisit Uncharted 2 here, but that seemed unnecessary somehow.

I was unusually excited for our PC-dedicated friends last week, so much of the news being relevant to them, and there being so many reasons to own a good computer right now. But I think we’d be lucky if the powerful good done by Runic balances even a portion of the shameless con being delivered in Modern Warfare 2. I’m not even sure who to take issue with, and I honestly can’t remember having been so angry. I hope we made it worth your time to find out why.

The powerful affection for the Uncharted series is evident in its sales figures, its review scores and the forum discussions of its player-base, and Naughty Dog are deserving of all the praise they’ve received. I won’t dispute that in this space, and at the time of this recording, we were in no position to dispute it on the show, since each of the hosts is at a different point along the path to completion. At the time of this writing, however, we’re prepared to modify a great many of those opinions. Which way they go we’ll keep saved for another day.

A lot of listener mail and a little slow-motion back-and-forth with the forum-goers makes us weigh in on the heavy side this week. Of course there’s more to be said now than we have time to say, and plenty more to be played than we have words to describe, so it’s going to take a firm hand to keep our rambling in check. Any clue where we might come by one of those?

Of course there’s more to be said now than we have time to say, and plenty more to be played than we have words to describe, so it’s going to take a firm hand to keep our rambling in check. Any clue where we might come by one of those?

We’re short by two this week (Dennis was immune to the schedule change, and Jeremy is pacing the floor in a smoke-filled waiting room somewhere, handing out blue-banded cigars and getting back-slaps from other befuddled fathers-to-be), which means a lot more effort out of each of us, and none of our simple, gossipy handoffs for when we get tired. We expected the result to be short, but the two-and-a-half-hour standard remains in place.

What we’ve played is our greatest concern, since we’re taking to heart all recent suggestions that we should move a little outside our comfort zone. It’s not easy, or natural, but we’d rather not ignore the gap in coverage, so bear with the pace of change if you can. We’ve also provided supportive remarks on what may prove to be unsupportable causes. The PSP Go! and Randy Pitchford were clearly the devils most in need of advocates this week, and we’ve spent loads of time on the losing side of arguments, so we figured ourselves to be a natural fit.

I may act like all sorts of snob from time to time – an English snob, a beer snob, a computer and video-games snob – but in despite the guidance of a dedicated and talented foodie-girlfriend, I’ve never been able to develop myself as a food snob. I wish like hell I had a palette that could distinguish paprika from all-spice or some shit, but I’m the kind of person who sometimes mistakes pork for chicken. So, given my ‘druthers, I’d just as soon have a pair of hot dogs wrapped in a dollar pizza. Of course, I’d wash it all down with an artisan brew.

Somehow, Arjay had the balls to go and get his PS3 fixed in a way that makes no sense to the rest of us. Hair-dryers were involved somehow, and for reasons we couldn’t come to terms with, it worked. We were hoping to wring some great drama out of him during what we were hoping would be a difficult time. We were also hoping it motivate him to buy that 360 we’ve been pressuring him into. But Arjay has no patience for drama, and now, a week later, it’s as if nothing ever happened. I guess now we’ll have to break his shit for real.

It’s a real disappointment for the show that Arjay is repeatedly left out of the XBox Live camaraderie. Despite our best efforts to change his ways he’s always been a one-console man and, for the moment, that console is the Playstation. Peer-pressure may be chipping away at his will, but the greatest strides have come with the recent death of his PS3. He’s not quite to the point of embracing the XBox, but with any luck his fallback strategy of last-gen gaming will buckle under the weight of exaggerated tales from ODST.

Regarding Halo, it was a real shock for us to learn how much fun could still be had with this series. We were always fans of the game’s world , even when we were at odds with its gameplay. It’s been nice to reconcile the one with the other after all this time. With any luck, the reconciliation will continue into the foreseeable future.

The Pox remains among us, by which I mean that Scott will be hacking and coughing his way through this episode like Clint Eastwood in Honkytonk Man, without there being a Marty Robbins to jump behind the mic if he throws a lung. Of course it’s not really that bad, and I see that we’ve had two movie references in as many sentences for a paragraph that should be about video games, so moving right along…

We were sad to have missed the Dreamcast’s 10th anniversary on the show, but each of us celebrated – or mourned, as the case may be – according to our own traditions. After a decade it’s clear that this machine was forward thinking to the point of being prescient. Who knows what sort of praise we’ll be heaping on it in another 10?

We’re happy, as always, to be joined by the occasional Dennis, who promises to be much less occasional from here on in. He seems to have learned a lot in his time away, and will be held accountable for how he uses this knowledge. He also seems to like the Wii a whole lot less, which makes it difficult for us to corner him for opinions on Nintendo games. I guess we know what Matt’s job will be when he gets back from the sand.

Xbox Live Update Coming November 17th, PlayStation Owners to Get Facebook Soon Too

<p style="text-align:left;">Xbox 360 owners will be getting a shiny new dashboard update on <em>November 17th</em> that includes features like Twitter, Facebook, Last.FM and the Zune video store. &nbsp; Also in the update will be a "News and More" section on Inside Xbox with feeds from MSNBC, The New Yorker and comics from Dilbert. &nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">So while the update doesn't have too much of an affect on your gaming experience, it certainly adds to the social and cooperative experience of Xbox Live.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Not to be outdone by the Xbox, Sony is planning their own Facebook app - as Eurogamer has <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/facebook-confirmed-for-ps3">confirmed</a> today. &nbsp;Leaked shots of the app hit the internet the day prior, and speculation ran rampant. &nbsp;More information is coming "very shortly" on the update, though we have to wonder, is it really needed on the PS3? &nbsp; After all, the system has a web browser.</p><br><br><a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.co-optimus.com/article/2966/Xbox_Live_Update_Coming_November_17th__PlayStation_Owners_to_Get_Facebook_Soon_Too.html">Read More</a>

<span style="font-size:smaller;"><em>Wait right here, Ned's finishing up, he'll be right with you<br />
</em></span></p>
<p>We seem to really enjoy our <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.co-optimus.com/related_news/Borderlands">Borderlands</a>. Many of us have already finished the campaign and are leveling up their second and third characters. There's good news for those that wanted more; a new island will be available for download after November 24th. The DLC pack is called "Zombie Island of Dr. Ned" and will give players an additional 6-10 hours of gameplay time to complete the story here. IGN has stated that there are about "50 quests, and 5 new dungeons" on this new island, with a plethora of zombies accidentally created by a wacky Dr. Ned.</p>
