Brecken's First Birthday

I can't believe my baby just turned one. How the time flies. What a wonderful first year of life we celebrated. Brecken is such a sweet, sweet child. He has a gentle, lovable personality. He always has a smile for everyone and is just an all-around happy little guy. We love you Brecken!!

We celebrated Brecken's 1st birthday today. It was SUCH a wonderful day and a FUN party. I've been busy making applesauce with friends, Christmas presents and subbing at the local sports club the past two weeks but somehow, managed to pull together this fun little party for Brecken. My friends, Carley and Kendall helped make it a special day as well. Kendall made the beautiful party hat and tie onsie for Brecken. I LOVE them!! Carley, made the hanging poofs and lent me many items to help with the food service and signs. Thank you friends! I am so blessed! We had such a wonderful time with everyone who came. The children (all 10 of them!) did a great job playing together and I enjoyed fellow shipping with all of the adults.

A Little of This and That...

Wow…I haven’t posted since March?! Life’s been busy here in Durango! Since it’s been awhile, I’ll just share a summary of what’s been happening in our little world.

We’re definitely all moved in and settled here. We are loving our little town. There are so many things to do outdoors and around town. I’m SO VERY THANKFUL that we moved in late Spring so we can enjoy these beautiful sunny, CO summer days. They’re pretty awesome! I started sewing and have been making tons of little girl dresses. My favorite dresses are made using a repurposed men’s dress shirt. Every time Taeya wears hers, she gets compliments while we’re out. I’m definitely not an expert sewer but I’m having fun learning how to sew and reading crafty/sewing blogs.

Brecken is getting oh so big! He’s over 20 lbs now. He was 20 point something mid-June so I can only guess what he is now!! He eats nearly two times as much as Taeya most meals. Guess he’s in a growth spurt! He now has 6 sweet {and sometimes not so sweet} pearly whites. He cut two his bottom two at the end of April? And his front 4 top teeth he cut in a 6 day span in early July.

We celebrated Phil’s 28^th birthday. He’s not a huge cake fan so we made him pudding with chocolate chips in it. Of course we added birthday candles that Taeya was allowed to help blow out. This past Saturday we went up to Silverton and had a wonderful family day together exploring the town and some back-country roads. It’s certainly majestic country! God’s handiwork is breathtaking. Phil and I have been trying to go out to dinner on a date for his birthday but don’t really have babysitters at this point. While in Silverton, we went to a nice restaurant called Handlebars (as in moustache). We had the kiddos with us but thankfully, both were well behaved. I made sure they brought Phil a birthday dessert and sang to him. Instead of candles, they stuck in a sparkler, which was fun. My camera battery died earlier in the day so I didn’t get any good pictures.

The kids and I took a trip to CA in early June for almost 2 weeks. It was wonderful going back to see many friends and family. I haven’t been back for 2 ½ years so it was a real treat. Phil’s mom, dad and brother came to visit us here in CO near the end of June. We had a wonderful time with them as well. I’ll have to post some pictures of our adventures.

Last but not least, I just was hired as a swim instructor at a pool close by. I’m teaching M-F five mornings a week for about 3 hours. It’s fun to do but I’m definitely grateful it’s only for four weeks. It’s hard being a working mom…even for such a short time!! I enjoy working with the kids and being in the pool again but definitely notice the time away from MY kids as well as the missed hours at home (my house is a mess!!).

Guess that about catches me up. I have tons and tons of pictures of course over the past few months. I’ll post a few of my favorites.

A Beautiful Spring Day

We enjoyed a gorgeous Spring day today. We headed to the river where we walked and jogged. We ate a picnic lunch. The kids swung on the swing and then we headed to the Discovery Museum to have fun and learn a little. What a treasure it is to be able to spend quality time with my children, especially enjoying God's beautiful creation!

Brecken is only 3 1/2 months but is trying so hard to sit up. If he's leaning back on me, he will continually try to pull himself up to a sitting position. I helped him sit up the other day and here are some pictures of him sitting all on his own. What a big boy!!

When Brecken was a couple weeks old, I was surprised to receive a package in the mail from my alma mater. The alumni department sent two t-shirts for the kids. They say, "Born to be a Mustang." The Mustang was our school mascot. Thanks TMC! We love the shirts!

I wanted to take pictures of both kiddos in their shirts together. I got some cute ones to start but wanted to get a better view of the t-shirts. Unfortunately, I lost Brecken to tears fairly quickly. Here's what I managed to capture.

I don't recall if I've mentioned this on my blog and since it's 3:44 AM and I'm up with the little guy (who isn't feeling well) I'm not up for reading through past posts to see if I've written about this in a previous post. We're moving in 6 weeks!! After many months of looking for jobs and countless interviews and meetings, the Lord opened a door and we'll be moving to another town in CO at the beginning of March. I wanted to share about the job opportunity as I know I've mentioned our unemployment in the past. Since this is a public blog, I don't want to share much more than that but we are thrilled to have a job although sad to leave our friends and home.

Another location, another adventure. We're getting ready for it and boxes are getting packed, walls are getting patched and painting as we anticipate moving day.

And because Taeya hasn't frequented my blog as much as Brecken lately...AND I haven't been taking as many pictures of late due to the above circumstances, here are two of my oldest sweetie.

Brecken Update

Brecken is starting to really interact with us. He smiles and coos often when we get close and talk to him. He has also started enjoying his playmat. I had him laying on it yesterday and he was kicking the toys vigorously with his feet, hitting them with his hand and licking one that was hanging near his face. He's also been sucking on his hands quite a bit. Still having trouble opening his hand enough to actually suck on his fingers but he sure does try!

Here's a short video clip and some pictures of Taeya's first ever attempts at snowboarding. Although it was a mere 6 degrees or so outside, she managed to do these two little runs and a few times on the sled before she left to play on the playground at the bottom of the hill. Both times she went down, she had a huge smile on her face. She also knew how to unstrap her feet all by herself when she was done. Great job Taeya!

Two Months Old

Brecken turned two months old on Monday. He is such a sweet baby and is a BIG growing boy. He had his two-month check-up yesterday and he weighed a healthy 13 lbs 4.7 oz. I looked in my baby book and he and I were almost exactly the same size at 2 months. I was 13 lbs 6 oz at two months, two weeks old.

I'm getting more and more comments about how much Taeya and Brecken look alike. It's fun to see them together and see how similar their features really are.

Siblings

Even though Brecken is only 2 months old, I love seeing my children interact together. Taeya loves her little brother and constantly goes up to him to give him hugs or snuggle with him. It surprises me sometimes because at 3, she's not exactly super gentle when handling him. However, he loves her affections and almost never complains or cries when she squeezes him a bit too tight. I am so excited to see their relationship develop as they both get older.

Resolutions

Normally, I'm not one for making a lot of resolutions, if any. I have goals in life and things I want to accomplish but don't usually feel the desire at the New Year to create new ones at that time.

However, this year I have a few things I'd like to work on.

I have been such a slacker at blogging of late. I would really like to attempt to blog much more frequently as it's such a great way to record the little things that I will soon forget if I don't write them down. One way I'm going to try to accomplish this is to publish a post on MY blog before I sit down to read other people's blog's throughout the day. I also have really been enjoying finding ways to become a bit thriftier and more creative of late and would love to blog about some of my ideas or things I have discovered through reading other blogs. I'm debating whether these ideas should just be added to my existing family blog or whether I should create a new blog specifically with thrifty, creative ideas in mind. Hmm...I'm leaning more towards keeping it on my family blog but we shall see. I hope you'll join me in reading little snippets from our family's life in the next year. I love hearing from my readers...if I still have any...so don't be shy! Leave a comment if you have something to say.

On one of the blogs I read, the writer decided to do a simple, new-to-her project each month to teach herself something new and expand her horizons. I would love to do that as well but haven't yet made a list with the things I should try although I have started one. If anyone has any ideas of something they think I should try, please do let me know. I would like to attempt curtains for one room of the house we move to, make peppermint playdough for Taeya and 10 other ideas (at least). Please share if you have something up your sleeve that is easy to do, preferably thrifty and practical.

We just wrapped up a lovely visit with my husband's family. They came out a couple days after Christmas and left this morning to return to CA. We had a great time playing games, playing in the snow and baby snuggling.

Taeya was eating her toast the other day and held it up and said, "Look, a heart beep." (her term for a heart). I, of course, had to take a picture of her heart-beep toast.

My little man turned 2 months yesterday. He is definitely a GROWING boy. My mother-in-law guessed he's about 14 lbs now. We'll find out tomorrow at his 2 month check-up. Brecken is beginning to make eye-contact and smile and "talk" very intentionally now. I absolutely love his little grins and they definitely make my face light up as well.

Today is my daughter's 3rd birthday! What a special girl she is. I remember the day she was born so well. We have had such a wonderful three years with her and pray that we can celebrate many, many more together.

This morning, Taeya snuggled into bed with us and whispered, "Merry Christmas." I then said, "No, it's your birthday!" We sang to her in bed and she loved it. At church, the whole church sang to her as well and she just had this shy little smile on her face but I think she was thrilled at the same time.

All morning, I was asking her how old she is. Her reply most times was, "I'll be three after Christmas." I would then remind her that Christmas was yesterday and it WAS after Christmas. We had a great time celebrating as a little family today. Phil's parents are coming in two days and we'll celebrate again with them and then have a few friends over sometime in January for a little friend birthday. Because her birthday is so close to Christmas, we have only celebrated with family the past two birthdays.

Family Update

Well, after 10 months of unemployment, God has provided a job for my husband. We'll be moving to another town about 5 hours away from where we currently live, still in Colorado. It is definitely bitter-sweet as we have many friends in the area we currently live. However, at the same time, we are THRILLED to have employment in the near future once again.

We are now busy trying to figure out what to do with our house. We are planning on renting it at this point and have already sold Phil's car that we'll no longer need as he'll have a company car. We'll be moving mid-February so at this point, we're not really thinking about the move and all the packing. Once the holidays are over and family leaves, we'll get into high gear and start packing and weeding out things we don't want to move.

Life has been GREAT as a family of four. Brecken is a wonderful addition and very loved by his sister (and his parents of course). Taeya loves helping with changing Brecken's diapers, putting his pacifier back in when he's crying and giving him lots of hugs and kisses. She even willingly shares her toys with him. What a blessing our children are!

Brecken update: he was weighed this week and was a chunky 12 lbs already!!! He's in the 96% for height/weight and is 7 weeks old today. He's one big guy and is already wearing 3-6 month clothes and has outgrown anything smaller. He has some reflux issues and tends to spit-up after almost every feeding but as you can see, it hasn't negatively affected his weight!

Brecken Zachary Camp

Brecken Zachary Camp was born by scheduled c-section (although I went into labor the night before. They slowed contractions enough to wait until our scheduled c-section time). He arrived at 10:20 AM, Nov. 3, 2010. He weighed 7 lbs 13.8 oz and was 19 inches long. Mommy and baby are doing great. Everything has gone so smoothly from the c-section to recovery and nursing. Taeya appears to love her baby brother and keeps asking if we can bring him home.

We think that Brecken and Taeya look SO much alike as newborns except that Brecken has a head-full of his daddy's dark hair. He looks a lot like his daddy did as a newborn.

Maternity Pictures

I was very blessed today to have a friend take some maternity pictures for me. I've been pretty lax about recording this pregnancy with pictures this time around. When I was pregnant with Taeya, I took pictures of myself on a regular basis but never had a fun maternity photo shoot and I really wanted to make sure I documented this pregnancy before baby boy comes. We had fun taking pictures in my little town. We went across the river for a few pictures and then to a local rail-road car that sits in town. Beth did a great job and best of all, was free!! I'm going to take some family pictures for her this weekend (as long as this baby doesn't decide to come early!). Here are a few of my favorites. I think I actually have 50 favorites from today! Counting it Down

I only have 14 days until I get to meet my little baby boy! Less than that because I'll be having my c-section early in the morning. I am ready for this little one to arrive but surprisingly, I can't believe how far I am in my pregnancy. I feel SO GOOD these days. I am getting naps during the day which has really helped but overall, I feel really good and not at all like I'm near the very end. Life as we know it, will soon be very different....and I'm excited about it!

My ticker is accurate as far as how far along I am in my pregnancy but it's 5 days ahead of the delivery date since I'm having a c-section...so just subtract 5 each time and you'll get baby's due date.

Pumpkin Patch 2010

On October 10, we decided to head to the local pumpkin patch as a family and let Taeya pick out a pumpkin. We usually go with a group of friends when we do our Annual Harvest Party. This would have been our 3^rd year but unfortunately, we’re not throwing a Harvest Party seeing as I’m 8 ½ months pregnant. This was the first year we went where it wasn’t really cold yet and we had a fun time walking around the patch looking for the perfect pumpkin and taking pictures. You can see our family photo from last year in the blog header. What a fun outing it is to go to the pumpkin patch. Although the pumpkins cost a little more than the grocery store pumpkins, it’s a great way to support local farmers and it sure is more fun than picking out a pumpkin at the store. This is a tradition I hope we will continue to do for many more years to come.

Want Cleaner Dishes?

My dad, who fixes major appliances for a living, just sent an email out about how to get your dishes cleaner in your dishwasher. Read below if you'd like to learn more. There are some great tips! I'm actually going to try making my own dishwasher soap because I have most of the ingredients on hand already. If you'd like to see the recipe, it can be found here. I haven't tried it yet so I don't know how it works at this point. I'll try to update when I start using it. If it doesn't work well, I'll be using the lemi-shine that my dad talked about in his letter.

Dear Friends:
The summer of 2010 marked a Sea Change in dishwasher detergents. The Federal Government banned the use of all Phosphates in dishwasher detergents in July or August of this year. What does that mean for you? It means that when you run out of your current box of d/w soap (which may have Phosphates in it), you will not be able to buy another box with Phosphates--ever!
Those of you who are wondering why your dishwasher is doing such a lousy job lately need to check the box or bottle of dishwasher detergent and see if it is Phosphate Free--or ECO-Friendly, as some manufacturers like to boast. Phosphate Free d/w detergent is worse than useless. By itself, it will leave your dishes increasingly dirty, spotted, covered with a white, ugly film. Your dishwasher interior will also suffer the same fate as time goes by.
I had a customer recently who just bought a house. The previous owner prided herself in using nothing but ECO-Friendly detergents in her home. She had used this soap in her dishwasher for the last 4 years. The outside of the dishwasher looked beautiful. It was spotlessly clean and shiny--like it had just been installed new last week. However, the interior looked like it was sprayed with concrete. I could not even chip it with my putty knife. This lady had to throw the dishwasher away and buy a new one.
There is a product I recently heard about from a fellow appliance repairman. It is called LEMI SHINE. It is sold in Target and Wal-Mart stores. It is a powder that is used in conjunction with your powdered, Phosphate Free detergent. It will restore your dishwasher back to what it was designed for---Washing dishes---and doing a good job at it, too.
I have listed some pointers below that will help you get the most out of your dishwasher--regardless of brand or age.

1. Do not use Liquid Dishwasher Detergents. Most Hi-End dishwashers have sensors in them that determine how dirty the water is at the beginning of the wash cycle. If it determines that the water has a lot of food particles in it, it will, in many cases, run the dishwasher through the longest wash cycles with the most fill cycles. This adds time to your wash cycle and uses a lot more water (which costs energy to heat). The liquid detergents tend to coat the sensors so that they can not function. It is like smearing Vaseline on your glasses and then checking outside to see if it is foggy or not. With dirty glasses, you won't be able to tell. That is what happens to the sensors when they are covered with residue for the liquid soap.

2. Use Lemi Shine, along with a good quality powdered dishwasher detergent (like Cascade).
The first time you use Lemi Shine, it is recommended that you use it in an EMPTY dishwasher. Fill the main detergent cup FULL of Lemi Shine, run it on the Hottest, Longest wash cycle you have. This will help clean out the dishwasher and pump assembly.
After you have run the dishwasher with just Lemi Shine, use a 50/50 mixture of your dishwasher soap and Lemi Shine in every wash load.
I would recommend that you only add this mixture to the main wash soap cup, and fill that cup only about 1/3 the way full. Leave the other soap cup EMPTY. You will be using about 1/4th to 1/6th the soap you normally would if you were to fill both soap cups full.
The manufacturers always tell you to fill every soap cup FULL, for best results. They tell you that because they are SELLING SOAP!
Using too much soap etches your glass ware that much faster, often leaves spots and soap particles on the dishes and tastes like soap when you drink from the glasses.
When you back off on the amount of detergent you use, you can often stop using Jet Dry for spotting problems. I often tell my customers, if you cut back on your use of detergent and stop using Jet Dry, you can go to Hawaii once a year on what you save.
An easy way to use this Lemi Shine with your dishwasher soap is to fill a sugar dispenser half and half with the two products. Then just fill the one soap cup 1/3rd full and you are good to go. Just be sure to label the sugar dispenser as DISHWASHER SOAP so no one mistakes it for sugar.
3. When starting your dishwasher, run the water in the kitchen faucet until it is HOT. Then, shut off the faucet and turn on the dishwasher. That way your dishwasher gets hot water immediately and you won't be filling your dishwasher with COLD water at the start.
4. While waiting for the water to get hot at the faucet, run your disposal for a few seconds to make sure it is empty. Most dishwashers drain through the disposal and this ensures that you won't overflow the sink and flood the floor while the dishwasher is running.
5. If your dishwasher has a "Water Heat" option for the Wash cycle--use it. This ensures that the water will be hot enough for the dishwasher to do an excellent job of cleaning the dishes. If you have young children at home, your home water heater should be set no higher than 120 degrees. This will minimize the chance of scalding accidents in kids or grand-kids.
The Maximum temperature for young children is 120 degrees.
The Minimum temperature for dishwashers is 120 degrees.
There is no overlap. Use the "Water Heat" option on your dishwasher--it is the most important button on your dishwasher.
6. If you want to save energy on your dishwasher use, select "Air Dry" for the dry cycle. Leave the door closed on your dishwasher once the cycle is complete in order to keep the heat in the dishwasher. This helps the dishes to dry without using the HEAT Dry Option.
7.
