Two killed in crash south of Trinidad

Two people are dead after a crash this morning south of Trinidad.

The crash happened at 6:35 a.m. along southbound I-25 eight miles south of Trinidad.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, a Freightliner pulling two trailers lost control, rolled on its side and hit a guard rail. No other vehicles were involved.

The driver of the Freightliner, 58 year-old Roberto Anaya of Ontario California was not wearing his safety belt at the time of the crash. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. The passenger, 57 year-old Roberto Villarreal of Duarte, California was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash. He was also pronounced dead at the hospital.

Alcohol, drugs and speed are not considered a contributing factor in the crash. However, the crash does remain under investigation at this time.

Highway 50 reopened west of Canon City

A stretch of Highway 50 is reopened after a semi truck jackknifed.

The highway was closed about four miles west of Cañon City for about an hour, causing major delays.

No one was injured.

Welker returns to practice, hopes to play Sunday

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - Wes Welker returned to practice Thursday for the first time since leaving Sunday's game against Kansas City with a concussion.

Also back in action was tight end Julius Thomas (right knee). Both were limited as the Broncos (9-1) practiced in snowy, 20-degree weather, which interim head coach Jack Del Rio called a "blessing" as his team prepares for Sunday's game at chilly New England (7-3).

Welker, who passed his baseline concussion test earlier in the week, wasn't allowed any contact work. He'll get to do that Friday if all goes well.

He said he's hopeful he'll be able to play against his former team.

Phillips proves quite a bargain for Broncos

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - Shaun Phillips spent a good portion of last summer waiting for the phone to ring. It certainly wasn't the first time.

A free agent heading into his 10th year, Phillips had been through the waiting game before - back in 2004, when he wasn't selected until the fourth round of the NFL draft.

The Denver Broncos came in with a one-year, $1 million offer in hopes Phillips could make up for at least a little of what they lost when Elvis Dumervil departed following a much-publicized and messy foul up with the fax machine.

Phillips has responded with nine sacks over the first 10 games, only 2Â½ short of his career high, and has also proven a solid influence in a veteran locker room and a better-than-expected run-stopper, to boot.

Brady, Manning meet again in matchup of great QBs

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - Tom Brady and Peyton Manning have six MVP awards between them in the regular season. They have three more in the Super Bowl.

On Sunday night, two of the NFL's greatest quarterbacks will meet for the 14th time. But there's a new twist. One of them is mired in the middle of the league's passer ratings instead of being near the top.

Brady and his rebuilt receiving corps have had some growing pains. Manning's deep group of pass catchers helped the Denver Broncos (9-1) become the NFL's best offense going into the prime-time game against the New England Patriots (7-3).

The quarterbacks first faced each other in 2001 and Brady is 9-4 in their matchups. He won last year's game, Manning's first with the Broncos against Brady.

Highway 50 closed west of Canon City

Highway 50 is blocked in both directions four miles west of Cañon City due to a jackknifed semi.

State patrol tells News 5 they are working to open up a lane for through traffic, but expect delays. We do not know of any injuries in this accident.

More snow tonight

A cold front brought snow to the Pikes Peak Region this morning, but that snow has been mostly limited to El Paso and Teller Counties. Northern El Paso County could see 3-6 inches, while Colorado Springs will see 2-4 inches in most areas.

Behind the cold front the wind blows from north to south. That comes into play because from north to south is about an elevation decrease of nearly 3,000 feet from the top of the Palmer Divide to the Arkansas River Valley near Pueblo. That wind blowing down the southern slope of the Palmer Divide drys the air and frequently chokes off precipitation around Pueblo.

This time things will be different. While the snow WILL be limited around Pueblo today, high pressure building into our area from up north will generate an east to west wind tonight and Friday morning. That is an upslope breeze that will help generate more snow around Pueblo after 10 PM tonight. Colorado Springs likely will receive more snow, too, but some of the heaviest snow could actually be around Walsenburg and Trindad.

Through Friday, snow could pile up to 3-6 inches around Colorado Springs, 5-10 inches in northern El Paso County and much of Teller County, 3-7 inches around Pueblo, up to a foot right by the mountains from Beulah to Rye, and 4-8 inches around Walsenburg and Trindad. In the Southeastern Plains, most areas will see no more than 1-2 inches, though the higher elevations between Trinidad and Springsfield could see 3-6 inches.

Springs teen pleads not guilty in 2 killings

A Colorado Springs teen has pleaded not guilty to First-Degree Murder in the slayings of a Fort Carson soldier and his pregnant wife.

According to the District Attorney's Office, 18-year-old Macyo January entered the plea on Thursday.

January is accused of killing Sgt. David Dunlap and Whitney Dunlap as he burglarized the newlyweds' home in January.

David Dunlap was attached to the 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, and he served in Iraq in 2007 and 2008.

If convicted, January faces up to 40 years in prison.

His trial is set for April 28.

Holmes trial suspended indefinitely

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) - The judge in the Colorado theater shootings case has indefinitely postponed the trial of James Holmes so attorneys can argue whether Holmes should undergo another psychiatric evaluation.

Holmes' trial had been set to start in February. District Judge Carlos Samour postponed it Thursday and scheduled hearings on the issue for Dec. 17 and 18.

Holmes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of killing 12 people and injuring 70 at an Aurora theater in July 2012. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty and want Holmes to undergo further evaluation of his sanity.

The findings of Holmes' first mental health evaluation, conducted at a state hospital, have not been publicly disclosed.

Friday snow in Pueblo? WHAT?! Not normal, but here it comes

We talked about it this morning on News 5 Today, and here it is again. We know Colorado Springs usually gets the snow and Pueblo frequently misses out. That's why this seems a little off, perhaps, but take a look at the map above.You're looking toward the west. That big towering mountain almost in the middle is Pikes Peak. The the right (north) is Colorado Springs, and to the left (south) is Pueblo. This map is showing elevation, and notice how from Pueblo to Colorado Springs (left to right) the elevation increases. Colorado Springs sits UP on the Palmer Divide. The Palmer Divide's crest is just north of Colorado Springs, and from the top of the divide to the bottom of the Arkansas River Valley (where Pueblo sits) is about a 3,000-foot drop.

Usually when a cold front moves through, the wind blows from north to south (right to left in the image) behind the cold front. That sets up a downslope wind (down the south-facing slope of the Palmer Divide), which drys the air chokes off rain and snow around Pueblo. Tomorrow, though, the high pressure behind the cold front will set up so that the wind blows from east to west (into the image). That is an UPSLOPE wind, and it is going to set up areas from Pueblo to Trinidad for a bout of heavy snow that will start to ramp up around 9-10 pm tonight and likely continue throughout much of tomorrow. Colorado Springs likely will see SOME snow, but the heavier snow focus will be south of Colorado Springs tomorrow.
