revista f is a group project and its basically a magazine directed to the students of ESAD.CR, a school of arts and design, in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. the magazine is the result of a collective effort, with the articles and photos being made by students and teachers from the school.

1912

1912 is the first part of a series of Franz Kafka diaries written between 1912 and 1918. this self project aims to recreate Kafka´s surrealistic and confusing narrative structure through the way text is presented. as the reader goes on, the lecture starts getting harder and harder. in conclusion the main point about this book is to make the one who reads feel all the madness of the narrative not by integrally reading it but more with trying to do so. nowadays with the emergence of the ebooks i wanted to catch the reader's attention to the beauty that is to read a real book;touch the paper, its texture, its volume; its not only about the story, its also about the way it appears to us, its own typography, its constructions.

ursula

ursula is a school work which teachers asked us to imagine some farm and create all the associated image for it. we were asked to make bottles of wine and other products at our choice aswell, editorial stuff to go along with it. i remembered about the Gabriel Garcia Marquez book “one hundred years of solitude” and decided to use as an inspiration. i gave the farm the name of its main character “ursula” and placed it in colombia. for each product i gave the name of a book character, this way each product reflects an unique personality and identity that i associated with the character, creating this way a parallel with the story. given the fantasy and exotic atmosphere present through the book i opted for vibrant colors and very raw typography.

the trial

the trial is a school work where it was asked to us to pick a random book and change it graphically. i chose the Franz Kafka’s book, the trial. i have read that book some years ago and i remember the deep impression it left on me. there were times during my lecture, that i felt somehow breathless; everything was confusing and messy, there was no space to move, no space to think; more i approached the ending more i felt my head like spinning. i tried to translate these impressions to this work through the use of condensed typography to reinforce the idea of asphyxia, eveyy letter is very close to an each other, theres not too much space for anything; as the book progresses the typographic compositions become more and more caothic, just like the story itself.

budapest memories

budapest memories is a self project that i made during my six month stay in Budapest. i was somehow a little bit disapointed with my school there but the city itself proved to be an endless source of inspiration. i felt the need after some time there to write my thoughts, sensations , memories; when i had already a good ammount of texts i decided to put all together with some photos i have taken during that time aswell and make this kind of diary. being it a personal project i wanted every page to reflect the spirit of these words i had written there. i opted to use only the color cyan, to give a cold, nostalgic feeling to the book. sometimes some typographic constructions seem more wild and confusing and i did it with the exact propose of show the confusion of my texts.

manifesto

manifesto is a self-initiated project. through these last years while studying at university i have seen a lot of “manifestos”, together with a considerable ammount of people speaking about design; everybody having an opinion about everything, telling one thousand theories; being tired a bit of all these things, i decided to make my own “manifesto”, which i tried to make look like a big irony. my ideas about design are still very green, i see myself constantly learning and constantly understanding that i was wrong; everyday i see new things and new approaches which make me question and doubt things i was so sure before; this “manifesto” shows all these contradictions, its hard to read at times, quite messy, sometimes it should be read on horizontal, other times in vertical, a little bit like i feel towards design right now, i'm confused but enthusiastic, or i could even say, happy to be confused.
