Less than two weeks left to determine Harris-Moore's charges

The feds have less than two weeks file indictments against the notorious Barefoot Bandit.

Colton Harris-Moore waived his right to a speedy trial, so prosecutors have until November 15th to sort out the charges against him.

Harris-Moore has been in a federal detention center at SeaTac since July when he was caught in the Bahamas.

The Everett Herald reports the judge could extend the deadline.

Fence Project Planned For Airport

A project scheduled to get under way at Chan Gurney Municipal Airport as early as this fall will help keep unwanted visitors off the grounds.

Survey and design work has already begun for a wildlife fencing project that will surround the airport property between Highway 81 and Peninah Street north of 31st Street. It will consist of an eight-foot woven wire fence topped by three strands of high-tensile non-barbed wire, which will make the typical section 10 feet high. Chain link fence fabric will be used instead of woven wire in the terminal area and along 31st Street.

“It’s going to be quite an improvement at the airport,” said Gary Carlson of Carlson Aviation, which is the fixed-base operator of the facility for the City of Yankton. “The current barbed-wire fence around the airport is not secure.”

City commissioners are going to discuss the matter during their meeting tonight (Monday).

Many years ago, a plane struck a deer on the runway, he said. Additionally, dogs and cattle have been spotted on the runway.

“If you hit a 1,000-pound cow coming in, that would ruin your day,” Carlson said.

The project, which has long been planned for the airport, was bid out in late August and came in well under the engineer’s estimate. It was believed construction of the fence would come in around $477,000. However, the apparent low bid, submitted by Custom Fence of Logan, Utah, was $350,000.

Two other bids were also received — a $395,000 bid from American Fence of Sioux Falls, and an $859,000 bid from Willard Schmidt of Yankton.

Yankton Public Services Director Kevin Kuhl said a grant application for the project has been submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration.

“We should hear back about it fairly soon,” he said. “It would cover all expenses for the project and some associated environmental issues.”

As part of the grant agreement, the city would be responsible for $13,000, and the South Dakota Department of Transportation would be responsible for $19,000.

In addition to keeping animals off the property, Carlson said the fence would also deter humans looking to steal a plane. The June break-in to the airport alleged to have been committed by Colton Harris-Moore, known widely as the “Barefoot Bandit,” was fresh in his mind, Carlson admitted.

“Ultimately, this will make the airport safer for the flying public,” he said.

SEATTLE -- Federal prosecutors now have until November to figure out what to do with Colton Harris-Moore, the Barefoot Bandit from Camano Island. A judge last week set a deadline of Nov. 15 for prosecutors to formally indict the 19-year-old serial burglary suspect, according to documents filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Seattle. It's the first time a judge has set a deadline for prosecutors in the case. The paperwork filed last week makes clear that the next few months may provide prosecutors and defense attorneys sufficient time to figure out how best to resolve the case.

New Guy on the Block? - Folk Hero or Second String?

It appears that there is another gentleman taking the limelight and receiving quite a bit of the nations attention. But even with a growing following on Facebook and a punch line of WWSSD (What Would Steven Slater do?), the new slinger on the block does not share quite the same style as Colton.

Flight Attendent Steven Slater was working on a flight landing at JFK airport that had traveled from Pittsburgh. When a passenger stood up as the plane was approaching the gate, Slater told the passenger to remain seated. The two exchanged heated words. A physical altercation ensued with Slater somehow getting hit in the head with the passenger's bag. Slater then grabbed some beer from the airplane refrigerator, and deployed the emergency inflatable slide to exit the aircraft. Slater was arrested at his residence in Queens on charges of criminal mischief, trespassing and reckless endangerment.

Although stealing a Beer was definitly in line with the "barefoot bandit," Colton never condoned violence; and until the inevitable day when Slater hijacks a JetBlue plane and slides out mid-air, lets leave him as second string. Not to mention, Slaters response sounds a bit more in line with a "bitch fit" than an "I Quit."

New evidence could implicate others in Barefoot Bandit case

Colton Harris-Moore, the barefoot bandit, may have left some high-tech tracks that could lead investigators to his partners in crime.

"The FBI is gathering evidence, in this case, in all different areas," says Emily Langlie, with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Seattle. Langlie confirms some of the evidence includes Harris-Moore's laptop and iPod.

The barefoot bandit allegedly tossed them into the water when he ditched a stolen plane off the Bahamas.

Emails and other information from the electronics could reveal who Harris-Moore was in contact with and who might have helped him while he was on the run for two years.

His accomplices could face charges.

SeaTac Federal Penitentiary

While the general population waits as the countdown to the sentencing for Colton continues, the "Barefoot Bandit" is housed day and night at the Federal Detention Center in SeaTac, Washington. SeaTac is currently home to approximately 821 Male and Female inmates including Colton and has housed renowned Drug Lord and United Nations Gang Leader Clayton Roueche, and Cannabis Advocate Marc Emmery. We know that Colton is not enjoying his stay so our hearts go out to him. Stay brave Colton!

Colton has been in and out of jail for the majority of his adolescent life. Colton's lifestyle of breaking into vacations homes, stealing blankets, food and water started when he was seven. His first conviction came at 12, and by the time whe was 13 he had received three more. With each conviction, Colton had a 10-day stay at the detention center or community service. In 2003, police found a neighbor's camcorder in his home. Sentenced to three-years in 2008, Colton became a fugitive until he was apprehended on July 11.

ELEUTHERA, Bahamas —

Hey, the young local guys on shore yelled at the skinny youth on the Boston Whaler drifting about 30 feet away, "You're the Barefoot Bandit!"

Colton Harris-Moore replied, "That's me."

He was wearing shorts with a camouflage print, a light-colored T-shirt. He didn't appear scared or nervous. It was about 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 10.

One of the guys, Morris Jonassaint, 19, was struck by something that Harris-Moore said at one point.

"He says, 'Call the cops! Call the cops! I want to get chased! I'm bored!' " Jonassaint recalled.

Respect and Praise for Colton Harris-Moore

Attorney John Brown said he spoke with Harris-Moore for four hours on Saturday and found him to be "fascinating, intelligent and introspective."

He wanted me to give the message to the public that what he did was not romantic, that he shouldn't be a role model and he actually doesn't like the attention he is getting. - Brown

Over the past few days, much has turned up in the news relating to the subject of Colton being regarded as a 'Folk Hero' much to his own comments. In the quote given above from Colton’s attorney and many like it, we are seeing a different Colton than many people were probably expecting. From what it seems like, is that Colton himself would like for the image that the media and his fans have created to be done away with. As a fan, I think that Colton deserves our respect and way we may want to rethink the way that Colton receives the medias attention. One idea is to address the issue of Colton as a 'role model.' Colton’s did something that many kids dream of doing. Hijacking planes, boats, mansions etc. the life sounds exciting and thrilling. In reality, Colton was experiencing a much deeper psychological tension and the acts he did were irresponsible and without saying should not be repeated.

For any of the kids out there who think this is fun, it is not, He was scared to death most of the time he was on his lark, and he's concerned that kids will think this is fun. - Brown

With this in mind, what Colton did also took a lot of bravery and he deserves our credit for the intelligence that it took to learn how to fly planes without a license in addition to evading police while traveling from the Pacific Northwest to the Bahamas. Let us not be naive of the mentality that Colton was experiencing while he was on his 'lark,' but I think he still deserves our praises for his bravery.

A Warrent issued in Nebraska, casting Speculation with goofball Michael Cera, and a grip of amassed charges where Colton is faceing a maximum 10-year sentence in prison if convicted. As the list continues to be added too, the speculation for the fate of Colton will increase until the drama is settled.

During Coltons first court appearance, which only lasted 8 minutes, Colton did not contest his detention while being read his charges in addition to being the primary suspect in nearly 80 crimes committed including the theft of five airplanes, numerous car thefts, several boats and numerous break-ins of homes and businesses. His next appearence in court will likely be after the Grand Jury indictment. For now, Colton faces time behind bars that is counterposed to his life for the past 2 years.

This does, however, beg the question, was colton really free when he was traveling across the country. Due to some of the reports and public records, the speculation of what prompted Colton is fixated on a broken home and family life. From a letter, Coltons mother wrote "This boy has had many disappointments all his life. His step father and our dog dies and this had severe effects on Colt and I." Colton was definitly running away just as much as he was running to. To what we can only speculate, freedom, adrenaline etc. But this simple fact of his home life begs our sympathy and our hearts go out to you Colt. Yet, we still applaud you for the tenacity and the intelligence (not necessarily wisdom) it took to do what you did.

Cyrus the Virus will not be on the flight with Colton Harris-Moore, but the next stream of speculation for the Barefoot Bandit seems to surround his return trip to Seattle. Colton will likely be flown on a federal inmate plane, but their remains the possibility that he will be flown on a commercial flight or driven to Washington. The timing is going to be sometime later this week or next week but the public likely will not know when the transfer will occur.

I know that this is late news, something that a 1 week vacation allowed me to miss but I wanted to report on it anyway. Now that Colton is in federal custody, there is sure to be a lot of negotiating as to his sentencing. From our standpoint, we have seen Colton get away with some amazing feats, and commandeering the powerboat was definitly not a dissapointmnet is his latest bout. As one officer put it, "it was like something right out of a movie."

Now all we can do is wait for what will happen next. Colton's mother has hired a High-Profile Seattle based Criminal Defense Attorney John Henry Browne for representing Colton in addition to a celebrity lawyer O. Yale Lewis to seek control of entertainment interests related to her son.

FBI Manhunt in the Bahamas

While the FBI scours the Bahamas with no avail of finding the allusive Teen Bandit, the allure of this Frank Abignale Jr. successor continues to grow. From swiping goods at a local gas station to finding part-time residence within vacant homes to joy-riding in airplanes, Colton has been a fugitive for more than two years and is a suspect in more than five dozen crimes. In his most recent incedent, Colton is suspected of stealing a plane from Indiana and flying to Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas (about a 1300 mile plane ride) where he crash landed in about 3 feet of water around Sandy Point, near the mangrove wetlands at the island's southern tip.

As the pressure to find Colton increases, with the FBI offering a $10,000 reward and a community of Abaca residents aiding the would be manhunt, the next chapter of this story will draw further spectators and cheers for Colton from the sidelines as well as speculationas to what will happen next.

Colton Harris soaking up the rays in the Bahamas. It appears that our teen hero is changing his climate has headed for a destination of envy in his usual island hopping self. Looking back at the past few months, Colton has managed to hide from the media, but this joyride has taken his fame to new levels and is reinforcing his image as "The Young Outlaw."

The Abaco Islands lie in the northern Bahamas and comprise the main islands of Great Abaco and Little Abaco with smaller islands surrounding the two. For the time being, Home to Colton, the Abaco used to be home to English Loyalists who fled America during the American Revolution and in the 1970's became the envy of American Businessmen who wanted the Islands to become a Utopia for Businessmen fearing socialism. It is also Regatta Time In Abaco and this begs the speculation that Colton has become tired of flying and would prefer to take up sailing.

For now we can only wait to see what happens next but this act was not a disappointment.

When the articles started showing up last year that this was the next big fugitive, Fans and skeptics a like knew that one day Fox would buy film rights for what is going to be the Frank Abagnale Jr of the modern day.

Before he was suspected of stealing the plane, the kid had been just Colton Harris-Moore, high-school dropout, juvenile delinquent, and petty thief who sometimes left bare footprints at crime scenes. After he climbed out of the Cessna and disappeared in the wilds of Washington State—home of Sasquatch, D.B. Cooper, Twin Peaks, and Twilight—he became Colt, latest in a long line of gutsy outlaws to capture the world's imagination.

Those affected by Colton's joyrides are not thrilled about the prospect of a Movie glamorizing the teen; However, from an investigative apporach, similar to Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild about the life of Christopher McCandless, this film could give exceptional insight into the life of the "barefoot Bandit."

Who would have thought that Colton could have made it to the "inspiring" TIME magazine this week. From one epic journey to the next, Colton seems to be making headway as each new article draws him closer to infamy. Quite honestly, I cant imagine what will happen next, whatever is written about in TIME is certain to find its way into the record books. We will see what the responses are once TIME publishes the next issue.

It looks like two anonymous producers are hanging out around Camano Island in-order to catch a sighting of Colton.

"The company claims to have had a film crew in and around Camano Island since last week, with more footage to be shot tomorrow here in the city. (More on that later, hopefully.) The pretty obvious reactions they're getting from locals: "We just want this guy caught." No kidding."

Although Headlines are somewhat dry regarding Colton these days, other than investigators trying to haphazardly pin a shooting to him, people are waiting to follow this one out to the end.

Colton, if your out there, your fans have one request, don't get killed.

Dear Residents of Camano Island,

As a so called "fan" of Colton Harris-Moore, I want to first express my deepest sympathy for the anguish that he has put you through. I was listening to the radio today and heard one of the locals on the island discuss the heightened security your community has faced since the increase in theft and crime committed by Colton, and believe that your voice needs to be heard.

As a respectful citizen of the United States, I understand how any kind of threat to a community can cause change in ways that are not always beneficial. The resident commented that due to the threat, many residents are being more cautious with their valuables and that some members of the community are purchasing weapons in order to protect their property. However, as i lament the plight your community is in, I recognize the un-tamable nature of Colton as a dieing trait in our culture.

I am a fan of Colton for many reasons. Anywhere from the tenacity he has to teach himself how to fly a Cessna, although mistakenly forgetting that landing such vehicle requires serious training; to his willingness to overlook the multiple threats he faces and commit to daring need I say extremely dangerous acts and actually succeeding in them. I dare to say that many of the people who have become fans have done so because they understand the same societal 'restrictions' that he is confronting or even escaping.

There is a longing in everybody to experience this sort of empowering and I think that any time people are confronted by a rebel, they tend to project their own personality onto that person. Somwone who has risked it all for that moment of satisfaction, especially when a direct threat exists. Since the beginning of time, man kind has done this, from Jesus to Jesse James, although different types of rebels, the nature of man to go against the established system emboldens even the weakest of characters.

"Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.”

Members of Camano Island, and the greater Seattle area, especially those of you who have become frustrated by Colton, we express our deepest sympathy and wish all of you the happiest of lives.
