Superbowl 44 broke a 27 year old record for the most pairs of eyeballs watching a television show. Whilst it is a testament to the popularity of the previous record holder the hit TV show "M*A*S*H", Mr Cat had to wonder what the impact this massive viewership would have on the consumption of advertising and subsequent traffic online. Air Canada and Westjet have both placed travel advisories on their websites stating that travelers to the USA will be subject to new carry on baggage restrictions. Westjet also offer the addition of waiver of their customary excess baggage charge. One cannot help but ponder the effectiveness of these measures.

VAT seems to be an obvious consumption based tax choice over the proposed, hastily introduced HST that is leaving so many BC residents smarting at their government. Read on as to why I think the VAT would be a logical choice, based on cost savings that it makes to the government, while providing many advantages to the consumer, including retention of the existing GST/PST discrimination on many items.
