Sing your way through history while exploring great vocalists and vocal styles. This interactive class, focusing on early jazz singing, combines three weeks of lecture, directed listening and conversation with three weeks of singing in a master class format. The first, third and fifth weeks will focus on the history and context of each vocal style with the alternate weeks providing the opportunity to sing what was learned.

This class, organized over three quarters, is designed for guitar players at the intermediate level. In Session I, participants will start with a review of basic scales theory, intervals and chord construction, working toward building progressions with an end goal of playing the songs and harmony of the American standards and jazz compositions of the 20th century. This is an applied theory class with students learning to play and applying the examples discussed in class.

Walk through the history of jazz with Vaughn Wiester, one of Columbus' most beloved educators, musicians and bandleaders. Vaughn Wiester's Famous Jazz History I will begin at the conclusion of the Civil War (1865) and trace the history of jazz and American music through the pre-Modern era. From the Delta Blues to Kansas City Swing, from collective improvisation to the ascendancy of the soloist and big band arrangement, follow the music (and the musicians) as it emigrates from New Orleans to Chicago, New York City and Kansas City.

Beats 101 introduce modern drumming techniques and beat production. Participants will get an introduction to the origins of hip-hop, will experience playing with pre-produced backing tracks, and explore the basics of music production and sampling. Participants should have basic drumming and computer skills such as word processing, email and web surfing as well as a basic understanding of basic music terminology and the concept of time, but do not have to be drummers. Please bring your own sticks, all other equipment is provided.

Microphone Workshop is an overview of microphones and their individual and specific applications. Learn about all types of microphones and their evolution over time. Study jazz drumming in the swing/bebop tradition. Participants will develop components of jazz drumming from a rhythmic/feel orientation. Learn to support and enhance the music as well as develop solos and review counting, time phrasing and form. A variety of great drummers and their styles will be studied and discussed through directed listening and videos. At the course's conclusion, record with a jazz quartet and perform for family and friends.

Play the History of Rock Guitar

During this hands-on class, participants will focus on the styles and techniques of great guitar players through rock-n-roll history. From Buddy Holly to Jack White of the White Stripes, participants will listen to, learn, play and discuss the influences and important historical implications of the guitar in rock-n-roll. Participants must be able to read tab and chord charts. Some experience with chording and soloing is helpful.

This classic soul revue show organized by Numero Group (a Chicago-based R&B and soul reissue label) features headliner Syl Johnson, who recorded on the Memphis-based Hi Records alongside legends like Al Green); Chicago-based vocal R&B group The Notations; Chicago recording artist Renaldo Domino; and special guest artists from Columbus The Four Mints and Marion Black - all backed by JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound. The local groups on the bill were featured on the Columbus-based Capsoul label, spearheaded by the late Bill Moss, a colorful Columbus personality. As part of the evening, Numero Group (whose first reissue was a Capsoul compilation) and the performers will pay tribute to Moss for his contributions to both Columbus and the regional music scene.
