Pride Tee Shirt Design Contest – Call for Entries

Stonewall Columbus is pleased to announce that we are now accepting designs for the 2010 Pride volunteer shirts worn by over 300 pride volunteers. The selected tee shirt design will be worn by over 300 volunteers and seen by nearly 200,000 people. Stonewall Columbus encourages creative minds in our community to submit their designs.

Last day to submit work: Friday, April 30, 2010

Maximum of 3 entries per person

Incentives

The winner and a friend will receive VIP passes for Pride!

Winning design will be seen by nearly 200,000 people!

Winner will have a major design to add to your portfolio!

Winning work will receive media exposure!

Design Parameters

Colors: Be aware that the tee shirt design will be printed in one color and the shirt will be a different color (i.e. black imprint on green shirt). You may choose both the imprint and shirt color for your design.

This contest is for the design of the front portion of the t-shirts only. The back of the tee shirt is reserved for our sponsor logos. The theme of this year’s pride is “Celebrate Our Families.” Your design must include the words “Volunteer” and either the Stonewall Columbus logo or the Pride Logo. Although not required, when designing the tee shirt you may include designs that fit the theme of Pride 2010: Celebrate Our Families.

Other Tips

Strive for eye-catching and creative, but also wearable and practical. Something that will inspire.

Because of stringent graphic standards requirements, do not use the logos of any other organization in your design.

Designs must fit the front portion of the tee shirt body. Do not include designs for the back, sleeve, etc.

You may choose to sign your work.

Designs should be initially submitted as JPEG, GIF, and PDF file types along with name, email address, phone number and a short description of the concept. If selected as a finalist, you must re-submit the design in one of these formats: .EPS, .PSD, .AI, or .INDD

You may enter a maximum of 3 designs.

Judging will be done anonymously and designs will be selected on the basis of content, creativity and design quality.

Winner will receive a copy of the t-shirt.

Submitting your design

Please submit your design via email to info@columbuspride.org with the work attached. All attachments must be in Adobe PDF, GIF, or JPEG format.
Checklist

Before you submit your design, make sure you have

Attached your design (that meets parameters above)

Have noted the shirt color preferred for your design

Considered becoming a Stonewall Columbus/Pride 2010 Volunteer

Have fun at Pride 2010!

Selection

Contest submissions will be assessed on content, creativity and design quality. A panel of youth and adult volunteers will judge contest entries. Submissions must fit all the guidelines stated.

Rules/Legal

The contest is open to anyone. Participation is free of charge. In submitting an entry, you acknowledge that the tee shirt design you have submitted is your own original work, has not been previously published, and does not contain any trademarks, logos, copyrighted material, or any other intellectual property belonging to any third party.
If your tee shirt design is selected for use by Stonewall Columbus, you acknowledge that you assign to Stonewall Columbus the entire right, title, and interest in and to the copyright in your design. If your design is selected, you will receive the incentives listed above. Stonewall Columbus may use your design in any manner, including but not limited to: reproducing the design, selling items bearing the design, changing or reworking the design by making color or size changes, making derivative works of the design, using the design on any Stonewall Columbus websites and on promotional material.

Personal data supplied for participation will be used solely for the purpose of the competition. Participants consent to the use of their names and likeness in association with this contest and Stonewall Columbus communication.

DeLunacy
Kat Deluna headlines Pride Holiday 2009

by Chris Hayes

This year’s headliner is the beautiful and feisty Kat DeLuna. You will know Kat from her debut Gold single, “Whine Up” featuring Elephant Man, and second smash single “Run The Show” featuring Busta Rhymes and Don Omar. At only 20 years old, she has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry and recently kicked off the summer on the “True Colors” tour with Cyndi Lauper and Rosie O’Donnell. She is one to watch for sure. I caught up with Kat on the road to find out what we can expect from her performance at Pride Holiday, her connection to the community, her fashion sense and what freedom means to her.

Chris Hayes: Is this your first time to Columbus and or Ohio?
Kat DeLuna: It is and I’m excited.

CH: For those that have never seen you perform, what can they expect?
KD: For those who haven’t seen me yet should be prepared for some upbeat energetic songs. They should be ready to dance. My performances are full of adrenaline and overall fun!

CH: Britney’s tour just came through town and she was obviously lip syncing, with so much dancing in your shows can you actually sing live?
KD: I’ll admit it’s hard to dance and sing upbeat hour sets back to back. No matter what the situation is I always sing live, there has even been times when I’ve sounded out of breath and even tired. I truly believe the harder I work at something the better the outcome. I will eventually perfect all performances. But you need to understand as well, we are human and we need our voices to rest especially if we’re going to need it to stay healthy for a long time! We’re not robots! Lol.

CH: I saw you at the White Party’s closing party where you definitely brought it. Will your performance here be as hot?
KD: The Palm Spring White Party was amazing and the support from all my divas and my fabulous guys was great!! I will definitely bring the same energy!!!!!!

CH: What differences are there performing to a GLBT crowd compared to a hetero crowd? Than a Latino crowd?
KD: When I perform for a GLBT crowd I’m in my diva mode!! For a hetero crowd I’m very fab!! And for a Spanish crowd I run the show! In general it’s all very over the top and fun!! Through music I show my creativity especially when I’m performing!

CH: You have definitely been working the GLBT party and Pride circuits this year (Dinah Shore/White Party, Long Beach/San Fran/Columbus Pride etc)? What’s your connection to the community? Is there any political fallout from doing so many GLBT events?
KD: No, not at all!! They have been supporting me from the start and I will always remain faithful to them!! 100%!

CH: This year’s theme for Columbus Pride Holiday is “freedom.” What does freedom mean to you? What’s your definition of freedom?
KD: Freedom – having a choice. You have a chance to stand firm next to what you believe in! And being who you want to be all the time! Freedom is being able to live your life the way you choose!

CH: For so young in your career, you’ve worked with some big names like Busta Rhymes, Enrique Inglesias, and Lil Wayne. Which celeb has been your favorite to work with? Who would you like to work with in the future?
KD: I have been blessed to have gotten the opportunity to work with such talented artists. I can see myself working with anyone who’s fabulous, innovative and risky!!

CH: Besides your music, you’re also known for your fashion. What’s your favorite thing to wear when you’re not in the spotlight? What’s your favorite thing to do when you aren’t performing?
KD: I love to experiment with high-end fashion. I love couture dresses and vintage pieces. It’s always fun playing dress up. If I’m not in my glam mood you will see me in skinny jeans, 6-inch heels and a vintage top or blazer. Chic and cute.

CH: What’s next for Kat Deluna?
KD: My sophomore album is out later this year, entitled Inside Out! I will be touring and building empires out of broken bricks. Most importantly I will be living life to the fullest and loving every single aspect of what I do!

Kat DeLuna is the final performer at Pride Fest on the Freedom Stage Saturday, June 20. For more info on Kat visit www.katdeluna.com. Chris Hayes is Co Publisher of outlook: columbus.

JUNE PRIDE MONTH is right around the corner and your Pride Committee is ready to present to you one of the best Prides to ever hit Columbus, Ohio. Goodale Park is going to be a fabulous location for the 2009 Stonewall Columbus Pride Festival and its 120,000 or so guests. We are looking forward to seeing YOU at Goodale Park on June 19 and June 20!

Yes, that is correct! Stonewall Columbus Pride is a TWO-DAY event this year. We are in a new venue so we are going to “kick it up a notch” for you, as my friend Emeril says. BUY YOUR OFFICIAL PRIDE DOG TAG OR WRISTBAND NOW FOR $10 and you have entrance to both days of Pride Fun.

Day 1 of the Pride Festival – Friday, June 19 – will include our usual festival attractions of exhibitors, food, and beverages with the gates opening at 5:00 p.m. Two stages of entertainment will also be presented that night, starting at 6:00 p.m. The event formerly known as “Rockin’ in the Streets” is now part of the Pride package this year. Melissa Ferrick will headline the energetic “Rockin’ ‘” Stage on Friday, and we will also feature Columbus favorite Trina Hamlin, among others. The “Gayzebo” Stage headliner on Friday is Josh Zuckerman and he will be joined by many others. Stay tuned for “Entertainment Updates” as other information is released.

Saturday, June 20 brings Day 2 of the Pride Festival. The gates open at 11:00 a.m. that day and we will celebrate into the night with the Festival ending at 9:00 p.m. Saturday will include numerous featured entertainers, including Headliner Kat DeLuna. Kat has toured with Cyndi Lauper and Rosie O’Donnell on the “True Colors” Tour and was recently featured at the “White Party” in Palm Springs. Check her out! She’s fabulous! We are so thrilled to have her with us this year!

Along with the excitement of a new venue comes a few changes. The Pride Rally is on Saturday, June 20, at 11:30 a.m. at The Statehouse Lawn. The Pride Parade Step-Off follows at 1:00 p.m. from THE STATEHOUSE, traveling north on High Street, then heading into Goodale Park. Another big change this year is that NO COOLERS will be permitted in Goodale Park. It is a neighborhood park, keep in mind. So, if you come to Pride with a cooler, please know you will be asked to leave it at one of the Toll Booth Entrances. There will also be some new guidelines in place for the Toll Booths this year, so stay tuned for those updates, as well.

HAPPY PRIDE – SEE YOU THE WEEKEND OF JUNE 19 AND JUNE 20!

First of all, I would like to send a big THANK YOU to all of the sponsors who have been so generous to Stonewall Columbus Pride over the years. Your partnerships have continued to help us promote and produce one of the largest and most popular Prides in the country. Thanks again, and we look forward to your return this year for Stonewall Columbus Pride 2009.

We have recently updated our Sponsorship Proposals and they are now available online here on the site. Along with the common Festival Sponsorships, we have added new areas for sponsorship opportunities, including Golf Cart Sponsorship and Temporary Restrooms Sponsorship.

We did not have the power to change the direction of the storm on Saturday for Pride 2008 but we sure had a fabulous day. By the time the rain hit Bicentennial Park, there were 120,000 people who marched along High Street and attended the festival. This was the biggest and best Pride ever with over 100 floats and groups marching and over 150 vendors exhibiting. Janet Jackson served as our Grand Marshal this year and the United Way of Central Ohio had ninety people marching along side of her. Some folks called the event “electrifying and flashy.” Those comments may have referred to the lightning; nevertheless the over 300 volunteers including Pride committee members took the compliment to heart. The headliner Jennifer Holliday was not able to perform due to weather conditions but did take the stage at AXIS nightclub later that evening. Events were scheduled all month long and each of them was extremely well attended. Brunch on Sunday, June 29 had 250 in attendance including Secretary of State, Jennifer Brunner, City Attorney Richard Pfeiffer and a variety of political figures. Stonewall Columbus thanks the countless volunteers and sponsors who made this day happen. Next year, Pride weekend will be held June 19-21 at Goodale Park. We welcome your comments and suggestions: visit http://columbuspride.org/survey to take the survey.

Congratulations to our Winners of the Parade Contest. A thanks goes to our judges, Joe Baer, Mary Ellen O’Shaughnessy and John Angelo who made the tough following choices:

Float Most Closely aligned with the theme, “Our Power” – Girth and Mirth
Best Contingency – United Way of Central Ohio
Most Outrageous – Exile
Most Creative – Gay Men’s Chorus
Best Float – Wall Street Nightclub

Happy Pride!! 31 Days until the Pride Parade and Pride Festival!

The big month is upon us! Pride Month officially begins this Sunday, and the events are as numerous and diverse as our very own community. Be sure to check out the fabulous list of everything on the “Events” link on the Pride website. Many of these events have their very own web pages with more detailed accounts of the goings-on, but feel free to drop me a line or give me a call if you have any questions. Your Pride Committee and Friends and Leaders in the Community have some really exciting things planned, so be sure to support these events and, of course, Stonewall Columbus!

The Festival IS still at Bicentennial Park this year, by the way! I know, I know – you are wondering where everything is going to go. Not to worry. That’s a bigger space down there than you realize! The City of Columbus has also been extremely helpful with keeping your Festival Committee updated on all the latest construction details and whatnot. I think Joe, Joyce, and Rob and Company could do this festival anywhere, they are that good! Just as long as the sprinklers don’t come on again this year to wash away Rob’s booth numbers, there are no worries!

Speaking of booths, have you registered for your space yet? Have you registered your parade entry? The “Pride Participant Packet” is available online. Simply download that, fill it out, and send it in to me. Don’t YOU want to see and be seen? Of course you do! Go to the online links and sign up now, as the deadlines are approaching.

Also available online are the dogs tags, as well as tickets for all things Pride. You can buy tickets for An Exhibit of Pride, the annual Pride Art Show which is coming up next week. You can also get your VIP spots for the special Pre-Party and Saturday Brunch with Bitch and Ferron, as well as other tickets for “Our Power Weekend,” the Pride Kick-Off Concerts.

You can even register your golf team to play in “Fore! Pride,” or you can register to “Run for Pride.” You also better snag those coveted spots to come to the Pink Party to meet that cute Southern Boy, Leslie Jordan (aka “Brother Boy,” “Beverley Leslie.”) And don’t forget to go to our link to the Ticketmaster site to purchase tickets to his show at the Southern Theatre the following night! He is hilarious!

VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP is also available online! We still need a few people to help in various areas, including the upcoming Art Show. Sign up to be a stylish server at An Exhibit of Pride. Or is setting up and tearing down the festival more along your lines of talent? Want to help with the Parade? How about helping in the Family Area or volunteering in the Beverage Area? Don’t you want to look important in one of those awesome SWC Volunteer Shirts? Come on, sure you do! All the cool kids are doing it!

I am getting tired just telling you about all these events! So get your pedicures, manicures, stylist appointments, disco naps, and dates all lined up – it is time to do the “Happy Pride” shout out for the next 31 Days!

Happy Pride!

HELLO, and HAPPY PRIDE!

Hope you are enjoying all the video updates and Pride blogs on our new website. What’s been going on in Pride World, you wonder? Well, this past month has been filled with securing sponsors, registering vendors for booth space, registering parade entrants, planning our growing number of events, and signing up volunteer after volunteer after volunteer.

If you are interested in participating in Stonewall Columbus Pride 2008 “Our Power,” please submit your information to me here at Stonewall. Our website is very user-friendly and just about every form you will need can be found online and submitted directly to me. You can also download, print, and fill out the various forms, too. The most important thing is to just get your papers in to me! I am eager to sign everyone up for anything and everything!

Our “Events” link contains all the various “Pride Happenings” throughout the month of June. You will be pleased to see many new events listed. One exciting event is the extension of our outdoor concert festival kick-off for Pride. “Our Power Weekend” will be held on June 6 & 7. Many outstanding artists and performers will be at Stonewall Columbus that weekend, so go to our “EVENTS” link and check it all out for yourself! Tickets will be available soon, so keep posted.

Another new event this year is “Fore! Pride,” the inaugural golf outing being held at Raymond Memorial Golf Course. Gather your foursome now and get ready to sign up for what we are sure will be a very popular new event. Door prizes, golf contests, auction items, SCHMIDT’S catering, and an all-around good time are in store for this event. Stay tuned to our website for information on registering your foursome.

The traditional Pride events also return, including the Art Show, “An Exhibit of Pride,” which will open on June 5 at Stonewall. This exhibit will remain up for viewing throughout the month of June, something new for the show this year. “An Exhibit of Pride” is a juried event with a “Call for Submissions” currently being advertised. Contact me for further details.

The Pride Poker Run also has an exciting change this year. Registration will take place at Pickerington’s own “Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum.” Participants can register for the Poker Run and then tour the site for free while awaiting the start of the event. The Poker Run will end at Club Diversity, the popular ending point for many years.

Also, the “Run for Pride 5K” is returning this year. It will once again be held at Goodale Park and promises to be as fun as it has always been in years past. Kelly Jaeger and Company are working on putting together some rather nice “goody bags” for you, so look for the registration link in the next few weeks.

The History Panels truly kick off the Pride events. Tuesday, June 3, is the date set for the first panel of the month. This panel will discuss “The History of Aids.” Stay tuned to our “Events” link for further details on participants.

That’s about it for now. I will try to stay more update on communicating to you all that you wish to know. Feel free to contact me to discuss anything Pride-related. I will be glad to help you out and continue to promote Stonewall Columbus Pride 2008 – “OUR POWER.”

Happy Pride!

Pride Question of the Week: What exactly is the 3000 Steps Fund Raising Campaign for Stonewall Columbus Pride?

Last year (or sometime thereabouts), a brilliant local businessman conceptualized the idea of a fund raising campaign for Stonewall Columbus Pride. And why not? People often raise money for very worthy organizations, charities, and causes through “Walk-A-Thons” and such (e.g. March of Dimes, Multiple Sclerosis, American Cancer Society, various local schools, etc.). Certainly one such fund raiser should be tied together with Stonewall Columbus Pride, right? I agree with all of you out there: the answer is “right.”

With this thinking in mind came the appropriately named 3000 Steps campaign. “Why is this name appropriate, you ask?” Well, readers, this fabulous title signifies the number of steps one takes from Pride Parade Step-Off at Goodale Park to the end of the Pride Parade route into Bicentennial Park. I told you this businessman’s thinking was brilliant, didn’t I?!

And just in case you are as truly detail-oriented and fact curious and/or skeptical as I am (seriously, ask anyone who knows me!), you can rest assured. I recently used my supreme Scientific Method skills and walked this route twelve times to make sure the number 3,000 was an accurate count of the steps. Take my word for it. The walk took 3,000 Steps exactly. Well, it did eleven times anyway. Today when I did my final test (I wanted to be completely accurate before posting this information), it actually only took me 2,917 steps. But one must factor in the -43 degrees windchill for today’s discrepancy, as I took bigger steps in this frosty mess. Sorry. And on that note, ”Welcome back to sunny Ohio, Linda and Karla!”

Now, if you still aren’t feeling rest assured at this number 3000 as being “official,” my expert advice to you is to go try it out for yourself. Once finished with your 3000 Steps test, you will feel proud, strong, and accomplished. But save your own research for another day, please. Pride is extremely important, we all agree. But sacrificing yourself to the elements of that brisk wind on the walkways and overpasses along High Street toward Civic Center Drive in the February weather won’t win you any special Commemorative Dog Tags or Pride Merchandise. Save your own personal Pride March for March.

Now that you have the somewhat verbose, yet factual history of the 3000 Steps Fund Raising Campaign, you certainly want to know more, don’t you? I know that you are having the following conversation in your head right this very second:

“Thanks for this informative, witty, and very scientific historical presentation, Jan. But what do I do now? What exactly is my next step toward the 3,000 if I want to be involved? How do I sign up? How much does it cost to get started? How do I set a fund raising target goal? How do I recruit both team members and campaign donors? And most important, will I have a date for Pride?”

No need to consult your Magic 8 Ball® with your questions. My sources say, “Come to Union Bar + Food on Tuesday, February 19, from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. to get all your answers.” Stonewall Columbus will be doing a special 3000 Steps presentation that very night. This night you can join in on the complimentary appetizers and cash bar, get all your information, and actually sign up for 3000 Steps and receive both your 3000 Steps and Commemorative 2008 Pride Dog Tags! You will also learn how to monitor your progress on the website, and so on and so forth. We certainly hope you are interested in attending! I know I will be there!

Please let me know if you have any questions or thoughts. I am always here!

Happy Pride!
