This new service, launched at Polaris today, not only brings free wi-fi to the mall but allows shoppers to access store deals from their phones or laptops. Participating stores (there's 12 so far) post sale information, including some offers that only those who use this service can get. With your smart phone, you can pull up the site and find out about deals, then show the coupon code at the register to complete the sale. Or, you can have the same info texted to your site.

You can also check out the site from home and print out the offers, subscribe to receive each store's sale updates, or just get a heads up on what you'll find once you get to the mall. Find it here.

This service will undoubtedly get better once the ball gets rolling and more stores and restaurants join in. Participating Polaris stores will soon be advertising their keywords at their locations, so you can walk by, text the keyword to a certain number and receive a text about their sales back in 45 seconds (or visit the site on your super-sweet smartphone). The idea makes sense, it was fun to try, and I'm guessing this is only the beginning of super-timely, hyper-local advertising services like these.

Tech across Ohio - Ohio Third Frontier Creates Employment Opportunities for Young Engineers

Recently, I had the opportunity to talk with David Dmytryka the co-founder and president of Dmytryka Jacobs Engineers, Inc. (DJE) in Toledo, Ohio. Nearly 15 years ago, David co-founded DJE and today the company is a leader in engineering instrumentation and control systems for both municipal and industrial clients. DJE specializes in water, waste systems and storm water facilities management.

David spoke with me about DJE and how it has used Ohio Third Frontier funding to provide engineering students with real-world work experience. With Ohio Third Frontier’s support, the company has developed an engineering internship program. Now, engineering students can apply their classroom learnings to project work at DJE. This experience helps students understand the critical role of engineering within larger municipal and industrial projects.

With DJE’s practice of bringing interns on staff as young engineers, the Ohio Third Frontier has helped increase the number of employment opportunities available to engineers who are just starting their careers. So, not only have the funds been used to increase the number of real-world internship opportunities available to young engineers, but they have also helped engineers land jobs after graduation.

Ohio Supercomputer Center and Nimbis Services to offer e-commerce portal to industry

Demo at SC09 to show how digital manufacturing will improve bottom line

Columbus, Ohio – November 5, 2009 - Officials from the Ohio Supercomputer Center and Nimbis Services unveiled an e-commerce service that allows companies to easily purchase OSC's Blue Collar Computing computational and expertise resources via Nimbis' web portal packages.
Nimbis will direct e-commerce packages to underserved markets in high performance computing utilization, identified as the "HPC Gap" where industry users cannot access available modeling and simulation resources to meet their needs. A January 2009 study by the Council on Competiveness (CoC), a nonpartisan think tank promoting U.S. economic competitiveness, indicated that many U.S. manufacturing companies are "stuck at the desktop" and not able to take full advantage of computational resources, while others have limited computational R&D capacity. Nimbis will demonstrate its web services at SC09, with a full release planned for the first quarter of 2010.
Industries participating in the OSC’s Blue Collar Computing program gain access to its advanced computing technologies in order to reduce the time and expense involved in determining proof of concept and designing new products, as well as to improve production efficiency. The program also uses custom-designed portals to give businesses secure, easy access to processing power and mass storage systems.
In a recent Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) pilot project, OSC partnered with other technology companies to support the development of real-time modeling solutions for military suppliers. Secondary and tertiary suppliers to Department of Defense prime contractors often are small businesses that do not have access to advanced computing technology or systems. Nimbis and OSC launched the e-commerce concept after the DARPA study determined that one way to increase access and lower the barriers of entry for companies to explore supercomputing is to offer easy-to-use portal interfaces, not only for modeling and simulation projects but also for business-to-business interactions.
To that end, Nimbis has developed an e-commerce front end to its website (nimbisservices.com) that allows a client to use a credit card to purchase 'packages' of HPC resources. This approach simplifies e-commerce consulting by making the resources directly available to the company, providing them access to consulting relationships with domain experts and computational consultants.
“Nimbis will be offering packages of OSC services via our e-commerce site, making it easier for startup and smaller companies to 'get their feet wet' by trying out computational resources with minimal risk, administration and latency,” said Robert Graybill, president and CEO of Nimbis Services. “Allowing companies the opportunity to work directly with OSC while bypassing the need for memorandums of agreement is another way to reduce the HPC gap for integration into business operations.”
OSC and Nimbis partnered in 2008 to grow a strategic new customer supply-chain incubator and source of domain-specific web portals for both regional companies and government research organizations. In addition, OSC offers Nimbis support as an early evaluator, adopter and user of its clearinghouse services.
"We intend for this e-commerce interface to offer many manufacturing companies with a digital ‘one-stop’ shop for their computational and software needs,” said Ashok Krishnamurthy, Ph.D., director of research at the Ohio Supercomputer Center. “OSC becomes an economic driver by bringing in companies with domain expertise, a practice we instituted with Blue Collar Computing web portals.”
On a regional level, several industry areas have been identified for targeting Blue Collar Computing efforts. A 2008 IBM Global Business Services study identified advanced materials and the biosciences as target market segments where OSC could better impact Ohio economic development and develop inroads in its relationships with domain experts. For example, the Center is working with Edison Welding Institute, a leading engineering and technology organization dedicated to welding and materials joining, on its E-Weld Predictor portal. The welders use OSC’s supercomputing power via the Internet to build virtual models that help determine the best design for welds for new parts. Companies can use virtual testing to save money on building and testing prototypes. So far more than 115 companies have taken advantage of the partnership. A similar program also benefits the state’s polymer companies.
Several advantages for industry and government R&D that are offered under the partnership include:

Removing industrial barriers to entry by creating a Blue Collar Computing Supply Chain Alliance Community comprised of Tier 1 companies and their supply-chain counterparts
Commercializing web-based usage of OSC resources to accelerate industry R&D from exploratory, informal research to computation cycles and micro-consulting
Accelerate development and usage of domain-specific web portals, such as the E-Weld Predictor portal, even beyond consortium use
Publicizing solutions that address the HPC Gap, as evidenced in the economic development, CoC, and DARPA studies.

Computational technologies provide companies with innovative tools that allow for the virtual development of new and improved products, such as cars, pharmaceuticals and financial products. Virtual modeling and simulation also provide companies with a competitive edge through improved manufacturing process design to bring products to market quicker, reducing development time, cost and labor. Simulation makes choosing between alternative processing methods far easier.
Better analysis and documentation of capabilities helps with efficiency. Improved factory and workflow layouts increase productivity. All of these factors can dramatically improve a company's bottom line and increase its competitive edge in the global marketplace.

NANOTECH CENTER RECEIVES $12.5 MILLION IN SECOND ROUND OF FUNDING

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An Ohio State University-led research center has been awarded $12.5 million in continued funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
NSF first established the Center for Affordable Nanoengineering of Polymeric Biomedical Devices (CANPBD) in 2004. The center is unique in that it is the only one among NSF’s 19 Nanoscale Science and Engineering Centers that focuses solely on the development of polymer-based bio-nanotechnology.

In its first five years, the center spawned more than a dozen patents, as well as five commercial spin-off companies.
The new funding will enable the center to continue its mission for the next five years.
“I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished so far,” said L. James Lee, center director and professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Ohio State. “This new funding brings us even closer to our ultimate goal of designing and building a nanofactory -- an assembly line for affordable, environmentally friendly manufacture of nano-based medical technology.”
Among the center’s developments: polymer scaffolds that support the growth of blood vessels for transplant; techniques for shaping DNA into structures that could one day form sensors for biological agents; and a CD carved with tiny channels that transport fluids for medical testing.
The latter technology forms the basis for BioLOC, LLC, the spin-off company funded by Lee and colleague S.T. Yang, also a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering. Their CD was the first to automate a common clinical, food safety, and environmental test called ELISA. Short for “enzyme linked immunosorbent assay,” ELISA is the most common test for HIV.
Other CANPBD Spin-offs based on Ohio State research include Ikotech, a company that develops magnetic cell-sorting technology that originated from Jeffrey Chalmers, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering; Ohio Nanomed, Inc., which develops drug delivery technology from Robert Lee, associate professor of pharmaceutics; Traycer Diagnostic Systems, which develops cancer detection technology based on a material invented by Arthur Epstein, Distinguished University Professor of physics and chemistry; and Nanofiber Solutions, LLC, which develops nanofiber mats for biomedical screening based on the work of John Lannutti, associate professor of materials science and engineering.
As to future directions for CANPBD, Lee says the center will focus on system-level integration of its new nanomaterials and nanotechnologies into advanced drug and gene delivery methods and single-cell analysis methods. These will enable personalized nanomedicine through close collaboration with medical researchers at Ohio State’s College of Medicine.

Ohio State’s Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design helped create the model, in which individual projects appear as nodes on a network, each connected by filaments to related research.
The model is not only visually engaging, but it drives home the point that all the work done at CANPBD -- in all its partner laboratories around the world -- forms a unique and ever-evolving whole.
CANPBD comprises more than 30 Ohio State faculty from four colleges: Engineering; Biological, Mathematical and Physical Sciences; Medicine and Public Health; and Pharmacy.
Partner institutions include Duke University, University of Michigan, University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, State University of New York at Albany, University of Akron, Oakwood University and University of California at San Francisco. Other collaborators include more than 20 commercial companies in Ohio and around the country, Battelle, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, the National Cancer Institute, NIST, and Wright Patterson Air Force Labs. How to Make Employees Social Media Ambassadors

As companies start to dip their toes into the social media waters, we have seen them implement a couple of different approaches. Some companies start with a small group of employees who are identified as brand ambassadors or official representatives of the company in social media networks. Other companies, such as Zappos and Best Buy, have given their entire employee base access to platforms for participating in social media, thereby making all the employees spokespeople of the company.
The Creative Underground has an excellent blog post on using your employees as brand ambassadors… and while it was written more from the perspective of empowering all your employees to be brand ambassadors, I think it rings true for either approach to social media.

That’s right. Instead of just one or two people being social media representatives of the company in the Twitterverse and elsewhere, what if all of them were? I know. Your first thought probably is: “Ha. Good one. We’d never get anything done.” Hear me out. There are rules to this concept working in practice, not just in theory.
1)    Cover your you-know-what.
Namely, adopt a Social Media Policy. I’m talking about a formalized document that establishes some guidelines on ethics and privacy. While you may already have a corporate communications policy of this sort, it’s very smart to be clear that social media is part of that policy too. I could write a blog post on this very subject alone but Sharlyn Lauby, president of Internal Talent Management, already wrote an insightful post that covers it: http://mashable.com/2009/04/27/social-media-policy/
2)    Train them.
This is a step that can separate the purely compliance-minded from the folks who see this as an opportunity to turn employees into communicators. This isn’t a stage made up purely of “Here’s what you can say, here’s what you can’t say” dialogue. While you may speak to that, training also describes being able to show employees how you’re opening up the doors to them as representatives of the company and letting their voices be heard in a very centralized area (more on this in the next step).
3)    Give them a centralized area all their own.
Now that you’ve set some parameters – and your employees understand those parameters – put a dedicated page on your site that allows them to post, share links, communicate with themselves and the outside world, etc. Want an excellent example of how this is done effectively? Zappos has 198 employees Twittering from one area of their site, including the CEO, who has more followers on Twitter than anyone else in the company. That’s an important point in itself – it’s easier to reinforce a culture of openness and transparency if management is actively participating in the same social media tactics as its employees and not just monitoring their posts.
4)    Sure, you need to monitor – but reward influencers too.
Let’s say you’ve got people Twittering aboard a main area of your site and while some of it isn’t offensive (you know what to do if it is), it may not be the most useful stuff in the world to know either. Yet maybe there are other employees tweeting about useful company products, taking a position on an industry development, sharing useful article links and more. As those people are doing that, they’re building influence for themselves and for the company by association. How do you know they’re influential? In the case of Twitter, take a look at a nifty tool called Twitalyzer and you’ll get a clear picture of how it encompasses the total package of an employee’s tweeting influence, including how many links they post, how many Retweets they make, how often they tweet and how many times that person has been referenced on Twitter.
I’m not a big fan of trying to force people to blog, post and chat about nothing but the company because that just isn’t natural. People need to be allowed to wander off the ranch and post some fun, non-offensive things that give the company personality. But do set up a reward system that shows you appreciate the quality of their communication. That doesn’t even have to be monetary but can be a seat at a newly formed and exclusive Social Media Committee, for example (one that encourages creative ways of communicating in the social media universe, not merely about compliance). I didn’t say this is for everybody. Many companies are only comfortable with 1 or 2 individuals being their official representatives, which is fine. But if you want to open the door up much wider for turn more employees into company ambassadors of your brand in the social media universe, it can work. And when it does work, you don’t just have talk among your own walls but interaction that can be meaningful with the people who may buy your product or service. Those people can build upon a positive conversation that revolves around your brand.

“I was pleasantly surprised by the information that was shared and what I learned from the presentation,” said Debbie Trager, Marketing Manager for Progressive Medical Inc., about the recent American Marketing Association meeting held at the Dublin Entrepreneurial Center. Steve Bell, President at Strategic Marketing Innovations Consulting and Tom Williams, President of InnoGage, LLC motivated Trager to “take this information, the presentation, (and) the video to prepare for a meeting with the president” to determine how to incorporate social media in 2010. Williams identified some of the explicit challenges social media creates for different departments. Larger companies evaluating the social media landscape are challenged by the inability to maintain content control, alongside a lack of cooperation among departments and business-focused tools. Both speakers suggested that a willingness to evolve is necessary, because “50% of companies are planning to launch their social media efforts this year,” said Bell. The concern around social media for organizations generally, and marketing professionals specifically, according to Williams is that “social media becomes the intermediary,” allowing “customers to talk to one another about a brand, without the brand’s influence.” This means that “marketing professionals will have to think differently about how to be part of the (consumer driven) conversation.” For Jared Cummins, Account Executive at AGS Custom Graphics, social media means “less people are using print,” but “it gives me other avenues of communicating with my customers.”

While large companies struggle with the adoption of social media, Steve Bell said these “free” technologies have leveled the playing field for small businesses, independent contractors, entrepreneurs, and non-profits. According to Bell, the consumer generated content of social media means the “brand is now in the hands of the users,” and this shift “changes the value of advertising.” Bell notes that when companies have bad press “you can’t spend your way out of a problem,” and this makes “honesty mandatory.” For the president of InnoGage, this shift means that marketing professionals will need to determine “how to justify” the cost of free social media. For Judy Stoof, Executive Director of Central Ohio Professional Education Council, cost is an organizational concern, while privacy remains a challenge for their members to overcome. Sharing isn't just for kids anymore. Thanks to a Cincinnati start-up, it's now one of the hottest ways for grown-ups to keep their friends up to date on their favorite things on the Internet.
If you've been sharing content with your Facebook friends or email contacts then you've probably seen the little green symbol from ShareThis, a young start-up that hopes to become the big name in online sharing.
Much like Google 10 years ago, which dominated the world of Web searching, ShareThis, founded by Tim Schigel, wants to be the ubiquitous choice of Web surfers to share information from visited websites with their friends and contacts.
The company has attracted $21 million in venture capital investment, $6 million of which came from local investors such as Blue Chip Venture Company in Cincinnati. Other investors include Draper Fisher Jurveston of Menlo Park, California, which invested $15 million.
With the explosive growth of networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, Internet users are doing more sharing than ever, tripling the amount of sharing traffic in just the past year, says Schigel, and ShareThis has grown tremendously along with the trend.
ShareThis is used by more than 125,000 websites worldwide, including Procter & Gamble, ESPN, Fox News, ABC, and Cincinnati.com, says Schigel. More than 186 million people per month use the online button.
Here's how it works: Users click on the ShareThis icon, which is available free to any Web address, and send the shared information to all the contacts in their social networking accounts or via email. As the Web surfers share with each other, ShareThis tracks the sharing data to offer advertisers and publishers an opportunity to maximize their ability to reach certain customers.
"We are tapping into what people are sharing," says Schigel. "Brand marketers are very interested in that information. The sharing data will be used to help marketers find key influencers on the Web."
John Atkinson, founder of BuzzVoice.com based in Mason, Ohio, an online audio source for news and blogs, says that as a publisher and a heavy end-user of ShareThis he sees how important sharing has become to Internet marketing.
"It's an easy way to reach a lot of users," says Atkinson. "It will be a better quality of traffic (than searching). People share content they like, so it carries more weight. What your friends say is valuable, so it becomes an important recommendation."
Chip Mahaney, director of digital content for The E.W. Scripps Company, says the personal nature of sharing gives it a lot of traction as a communication tool in a marketplace crowded with messages.
"In a world where ads are ubiquitous, nothing is quite as relevant as something that is shared by a friend or colleague," he says. "I think it's going to have an impact."
ShareThis currently employs 21. While the company is still in the growth and development phase, Schigel says the potential for future revenue generation is significant, although he declined to talk about specific figures.
The revenue potential will come from the sharing data that is gleaned from many users. Publishers and advertisers will be anxious to pay for the information about who is sharing what, says Schigel.
In the first half of 2009, Web-based advertising revenue totaled $10.9 billion, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau. While this is down slightly from 2008 due to the economy, the IAB expects advertising on the Internet to recover quickly as the economy improves.
Although ShareThis is based in Cincinnati, it also has an office in Mountain View, Calif., right across the street from Google, notes Schigel.
"A lot of the talent is out there, so it was necessary to have an office out there too," he says.
He plans to continue to run the company from Cincinnati, where its operations and customer support is headquartered, because this is his home. Over the next year the company will even add to its employee count here.
But personal convenience isn't the only plus of being located in Cincinnati, he adds.
Working with companies such as Procter & Gamble has helped keep the development of ShareThis grounded to real world business solutions, says Schigel.
"We're making product that's valuable to all users of the Internet," he says, "not just those in the tech echo chamber."
Lucas Watson, global team leader, digital business strategy at P&G, says that sharing has definitely become an important method for increasing brand awareness.
"Both searching and sharing act as filters with… sharing allowing people you trust to filter for things you may want to know," says Watson. "As brands are providing easy ways to share their content they are activating brand ambassadors and reaching more people with their message."
Mark Richey, managing director of Draper Triangle Ventures in Cincinnati, says he's not surprised to see a company such as ShareThis thriving in Cincinnati.
"Clearly where Cincinnati has a history of world class talent is in consumer marketing," says Richey. "We have media talent here that is unequaled anywhere else. You're starting to see some of that talent move into all these other areas of new media. The success of companies like ShareThis will spawn more opportunities for success."

Rich Langdale

Rich is a seasoned entrepreneur

and investor. In 1986, while attending The Ohio State University, Mr. Langdale founded Digital Storage, Inc. ("DSI"). Since that time he has founded a total of eight companies and has co-founded, acquired or invested in several more under the umbrella of NCT Ventures. Improveit Home Remodeling is a sister company of improveit! 360, and they are a founder run entrepreneurial business, who specialize in B2C home services and replacement products. They have a decorated 20 year history, having grown from two employees into an organization with annual revenues of approximately $15 million.

We are focused on a finding an entrepreneurial candidate who is passionate about marketing. The project will be too build, manage, and execute targeted email campaigns to increase the MROI of the company. Using statistical and systems analysis, as well as constructing the actual creative and messaging, this candidate will report directly to the CEO in a very high profile role. The right candidate should be very interested in managing multiple campaigns simultaneously, and providing metrics on the effectiveness and return generated by each one. The candidate will optimally be able to make design tweaks in Microsoft Front Page, edit and insert graphics into HTML, and be organized enough to plan, brief management, and execute successful marketing efforts. The candidate will have CRM solutions to help them assist with the capture of this information.

The final deliverable will be campaigns that have focused on helping us align our value, message, and marketing tools to drive sales in our target market. A great candidate will have produced processes and/or mechanisms that will remain in use should the candidate not be interested in continuing to work part-time post internship (if requested by the company).

Ideally, we would like a candidate who is thinking long term and would like to continue working part-time, after the internship, while they are finishing school. We have successfully converted part-time students into full-time opportunities, which are now driving major functions of our business.

Qualifications:

A student, clearly focused on working in an entrepreneurial environment. We define that environment to mean self-manageable (but not without mentorship/guidance/feedback), self-motivated (no need to counsel and incentivize from the outset), and someone who is very dedicated to delivering top-notch quality and professionalism in their work. Specific skills that would help a candidate in this specific internship:
- ability to work with HTML programs
- ability to conceptualize and organize projects
- ability to clearly communicate both written and orally
- ability to learn quickly

Andy Savitz, author of The Bottom Line, will be speaking this Tuesday, November 10th @ 4;00pm in Gerlach Hall room 265.

The Triple Bottom Line is a key concept composed of the balance between economic, social and environmental aspect of business and is a key concept to sustainability. OSU Net Impact is glad to welcome Andy Savitz, Author of The Triple Bottom line: How the Best Run Companies are Achieving Economic, Social and Environmental Success. He is also the founder of the consulting firm Sustainable Business Strategies that consults with a variety of Fortune 500 organizations including Pepsi and AEP. Prior to the founding his own firm he was a lead partner in PricewaterhouseCooper's global Sustainability Business Services practice and was PwC's liaison delegate to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. This event will count towards the OSU Net Impact certificate. We will also be raffling to two signed copies of his book to those who attend.
