Robert Guerrero Responds to Malignaggi: "You're Not HBO or Showtime Approved"

As expected, Robert Guerrero has quickly responded to Paulie Malignaggi's open letter. Malignaggi claims that Guerrero has turned him down for a fight on May 5, on the Mayweather vs Cotto PPV undercard, and called him out earlier today.

Here's Guerrero's short response:

"Look at the facts Paulie, why did I turn you down? You're a tremendous puncher? NO! You make for fan friendly fights? NO! You are a HBO or Showtime approved fighter? NO! Fact is, Eric Gomez at Golden Boy said you wouldn't be approved to fight on a date that isn't a Pay Per View. So if our promoter can convince a network that you are worthy enough to be on your own date, then let's rumble. I got a Shark Tank waiting."

Malignaggi (30-4, 6 KO) has been absent from regular HBO since his one-sided beating at the hands of Amir Khan in May 2010, but was featured on a pair of pay-per-views last year. He opened both the Morales vs Maidana (beating Jose Miguel Cotto) and Hopkins vs Dawson (beating Orlando Lora) shows, both of which were huge flops seen live by very, very few viewers (reported 50K and 40K buys, respectively).

But Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO) also hasn't been on regular HBO in a good while. He fought just once last year, beating Michael Katsidis on the same Morales vs Maidana show. He was set to face Maidana in August, but that was canceled due to an injury.

Guerrero vs Malignaggi is not an HBO main event. It's not a Showtime main event. The reason? Neither of them are worth that kind of money. This is a co-feature fight at best -- and I don't see either of them getting anything better on U.S. TV at this point, either.

Malignaggi also recently turned down a $250,000 payday in Ukraine against Vyacheslav Senchenko, or at least all but officially turned it down. Guerrero has been attempting to land fights with Floyd Mayweather Jr and Victor Ortiz, unsuccessfully in both cases.

Peterson vs Khan II: Timothy Bradley Favors Peterson to Win Again

Timothy Bradley, who currently sits at the top of the world's 140-pound rankings as he prepares to move up in weight to face Manny Pacquiao on June 9, is favoring Lamont Peterson to more convincingly defeat Amir Khan in their May 19 rematch for the WBA and IBF belts.

From BoxingScene.com:

"I think Peterson is going to go back and start off where he left off, I'm sure. He knows that Khan can't take pressure. I just don't see Khan becoming this great inside-fighter in a couple of months. I don't see that happening. I pick Peterson in that fight and I pick him to win convincingly this time."

Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO) defeated Khan (26-2, 18 KO) on December 10 in Washington, DC, but the fight had a lot of controversy with the scoring, the refereeing, and even Mustafa Ameen, the "mystery man" in the hat. (By the way, I don't know that Ameen ever got his apology from Khan after threatening a lawsuit.)

Bradley makes valid points. The harshest criticisms of Khan have been:

He has a horrible time making adjustments mid-fight, and can only fight effectively in one mode.
He's really bad with the inside game ("really bad" for a world class fighter, of course), which is where Peterson has the ability to truly outclass Khan.

Peterson turned down a potential date with Juan Manuel Marquez to take this fight, so obviously he and manager/trainer Barry Hunter must like their chances in a second dance with Khan. There's a reasonable question to ask of Peterson, too, which is, "Can he do better than he did the first time out?" Was that Peterson's absolute best possible effort?

It would seem Khan can fight better. But can he? He has to adjust. He has to be better inside. And with the fight coming in three months, Bradley's doubt that Khan can truly improve his inside fighting game is pretty reasonable.

Humberto Soto vs Lucas Matthysse: Fight Is Official for Peterson vs Khan Undercard

Humberto Soto says the deal is done for him to face Lucas Matthysse on May 19 in the HBO co-feature on the Lamont Peterson vs Amir Khan II card.

Soto vs Matthysse was strongly rumored last night to be the other televised bout on the card, with Richard Schaefer saying it was close. Today, Soto's team says they've received confirmation from Golden Boy that the fight is official.

Here's what Soto had to say about the fight:

"[Matthysse] is a fighter with name, who punches and has a great heart, but I have no doubt that we will win the fight and that people in the arena of Las Vegas will leave very happy that night. I'm coming with a lot of confidence and the vision of having a performance that everyone will remember and place the name of Mexico in a very high position ... it will be my night."

Matthysse (29-2, 27 KO) fights tonight in Argentina in a stay-busy bout, facing Angel Martinez (13-1-1, 9 KO).

Like I said last night, I've been highly critical of Soto's careful matchmaking and often terrible mismatches the last few years, but there's zero problem with this fight, and it will be the best fight he's taken at least since his 2010 Fight of the Year contender against Urbano Antillon, and arguably since his 2007 loss to Joan Guzman.

Matthysse will be a serious test at 140 pounds for Soto (57-7-2, 34 KO), who has had trouble with physical lightweights like Antillon and even David Diaz. He beat both of them, and deserved the wins, but they were able to wear on Soto, a guy who's really a natural featherweight with a pretty slight, thin build. Matthysse is a full-fledged junior welter who can punch and is pretty physically strong. This is a true risk for Soto.

Hats off to Soto and his team for taking this level of fight finally, and to Golden Boy for getting it done. Soto hasn't been with GBP long (he signed in September) and this is a good sign that they plan to have him take challenges instead of coasting.

Paulie Malignaggi says that he and Robert Guerrero were offered an undercard spot on the May 5 HBO pay-per-view card featuring Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Miguel Cotto in the main event, and says that he's accepted -- but Guerrero has refused the fight.

In a statement sent out from Paulie, he questions Guerrero's desire to fight. Here's the full open letter from Malignaggi to Guerrero:

For the past 3 months, you and your team have attempted to trick the media and boxing public into believing that you were on a short list to fight the best fighter in the world, Floyd Mayweather. You also called out every Golden Boy Promotions boxer you could between 135 to 147 pounds, proclaiming your health after shoulder surgery and your readiness to step into the ring in a big fight on May 5th. Every time you had a big bowel movement, your publicist sent an email blast about it.

Two days ago, you and I were offered to fight each other on May 5th as an important supporting pay-per-view bout on the Mayweather vs. Cotto blockbuster PPV. I am sure you will agree that Mayweather vs. Cotto will be the biggest pay-per-view show of the year and on the biggest platform imaginable at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and on HBO PPV. Millions of boxing fans will have the opportunity to finally see if you can back up your recent widespread chatter on the internet.

Robert, I accepted the challenge to fight you within 2 hours of being offered the fight. But I have been informed by our promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, that you have categorically refused to fight me. This news was absolutely shocking to me because I have seen you transform yourself from a cute, soft spoken, California kid to well...someone like me. I give you props for trying to wake up the old boxing farts with sound bites like telling Mayweather to "Step Up Punk" or telling Victor Ortiz 3 days ago that "if you're really a true warrior, you'll step in the ring with me." But take it from an older and wiser Magic Man that has never needed to hide behind a publicist and has always backed up his words by stepping in with the best fighters in the world....if you start talking the way you have been talking...you better be ready to accept whatever challenges come your way.

Robert, I know that you and your team have been present in the Arena for my past two fights and you have seen how good I have looked in dismantling my opponents. And maybe your advisors think that all the garlic in Gilroy won't protect you should we fight on May 5th. But you need to find the Mexican warrior within yourself and back up your hot air by stepping into the ring on the day of pride and heritage for your people, Cinco De Mayo. Because if you think you deserve to fight the elite boxers in this world, you need to earn it with more than just a trigger happy publicist.

You are a paper Champion that has never fought anyone in the Top 100 of boxing. Beating a geriatric Joel Casamayor or the Australian punching bag that is Michael Katsidis does not earn you the right to call out Floyd Mayweather, Amir Khan, and Victor Ortiz. Beating me on May 5th might get you one step closer to that honor.

So come on, Robert. Don't become a big joke with the boxing world. What are you afraid of? Coming off shoulder surgery? I have had more surgery on my hands than an aging Beverly Hills housewife. Are you for real or are you truly just a ghost with a good publicist?

In the 10-round main event, lightweight contender Kevin Mitchell (32-1, 24 KO) is staying busy against Felix Lora (14-8-5, 8 KO), a Dominican-born fighter now living in Spain. It's a mismatch on paper, and Mitchell says he's taking the fight purely to get some rounds in and stay busy. He's not fought since his impressive win last July over John Murray, which won British Fight of the Year.

Mitchell is hoping to use this fight as a springboard to face WBO lightweight titlist Ricky Burns, who is in action on March 10 against Paulus Moses.

Though Brandon Rios is currently reportedly in talks to face Yuriorkis Gamboa on April 14 in Las Vegas, the ex-lightweight titlist is hoping to land a July 14 date in Cowboys Stadium against Juan Manuel Marquez, too.

From Chris Robinson of the Examiner:

"I would love a fight like that. I would love to fight that guy. ... He’s very smart, very talented, and when he throws his punches he throws to make sure he lands; he’s very accurate. A fight like that, you just got to watch out, always stay on your toes, and be ready for whatever he brings because Marquez is going to come and he’s going to come to win."

Bob Arum apparently still plans to run with Marquez at Cowboys Stadium on that date despite the fact that Lamont Peterson has signed for a May 19 rematch against Amir Khan, and Rios would be as good an opponent as anyone out there.

Rios (29-0-1, 22 KO) was successful in his December 3 fight against John Murray, but lost his WBA lightweight title on the scales despite a valiant and frankly dangerous attempt to make weight in the final days before the fight. His team has hired a nutrionist to try and keep him in the lightweight division for the time being, but he's probably not long for that division, and Marquez has indicated a desire to stay over 135 himself, so that fight could be at 140 if it were to happen.

I still think Arum is crazy with this Cowboys Stadium thing, but I've thought Arum was crazy about a lot of things that worked. Marquez vs Rios is probably a better big stadium fight than Marquez vs Peterson, but you're still lacking that big, huge A-side star to make a fight like that really pop. Marquez is a big star nowadays, but he's not Manny Pacquiao, and Manny Pacquiao's fights in the stadium were disappointments financially.

Abner Mares, who recently vacated his IBF bantamweight title to move up to 122 pounds, will return to the ring on April 21 in Mexico City, with Showtime televising. Mares will be facing Eric Morel, a fellow Golden Boy fighter, but after that is looking to target the biggest names in the division, according to Sal Rodriguez.

"We've seen all of the fighters at super bantamweight and I'm excited because there are no bad fighters. Personally, I would like a fight against Nonito Donaire, because they say he's the best, but there are others on the list Fernando Montiel, Victor Terrazas, Jorge Arce, Wilfredo Vazquez, Guillermo Rigondeaux and others like my opponent, Eric Morel."

Mares and Morel will apparently both be going up to 122 for their April fight, which could be held at the new stadium in the city, which is set to be opened in the boxing world by Juan Manuel Marquez on April 14.

Mares' manager Frankie Espinoza also touches on this, but the reality is that Mares is going to have a tough time finding big fights at 122 pounds unless he leaves Golden Boy, because four of the names he mentioned (Donaire, Arce, Vazquez, and Rigondeaux) are tied to Top Rank, and top dog Toshiaki Nishioka's promoter works with Top Rank in the United States.

Others have mentioned this on the site, but Mares' deal with Golden Boy is up shortly. They're incredibly proud of Mares, who is the first homegrown Golden Boy fighter to win a major title, and I've got to believe they'll do everything in their power to keep him, but if he can't get the fights he wants, business will come first, and he may move on.

I'm not saying Golden Boy deserves that, because they've done a good job with Mares, who has earned his status with some really good wins, it's just the unfortunate reality of this particular situation. The biggest fights for Mares are against Top Rank guys. It'll be interesting to see where his career takes him in the near future.
