Spine of Secret Agent of Japan, First Edition, October 1938

Today we have a stated first edition of Secret Agent of Japan by Amleto Vespa and published by Little, Brown and Company in 1938 and copyrighted by the A. L. Burt Company, also 1938.  This is a Stated First Edition… Printed October 1938.

The frontispiece is a photo of Mr. Vespa standing in front of a Japanese building, dated 1927.   The introduction is by H. J. Timperley, who was chosen by Mr. Vespa to help with this book because Mr. Timperley already had gone through some “issues” with the Japanese and won, so Mr. Vespa thought his experience would be invaluable in getting this book published.

“This is the most powerful indictment I have ever read, of a class, a whole people, in fact of ‘the whole system of organised injustice by which few govern many, hundreds of millions work in darkness to support a few thousands in ease, group imposes on group, and the greater part of the human race has to live in filth and starvation to maintain artificial means of profit.’”

As you may have already guessed, this is a book about Amleto Vespa’s life as he was forced into service in the Japanese Secret Service when the Japanese took over Manchuria during the effort to take over that part of the world between the two World Wars.

With fourteen (14) action filled chapters spread over 301 pages, this account is a Must Read for any serious Japanese, Chinese, Manchurian, or Far East Historian.

There are 14 Black and White Illustrations included within these pages, and all are in excellent condition.

The book itself is in pretty good condition with some discoloration to the cover, but very little, if any, to the pages.

The front cover has the standard bumping on the corners and a small crease near the top, outside corner.  The spine is badly discolored and shows wear and bumping and the back cover is discolored also.  Inside the back cover is a stain, but I don’t see it on any of the pages.

Front cover of 1955 Motion Picture and Television Almanac

In this listing we have a very good (nearly excellent) copy of the 1955 Motion Picture and Television Almanac from Quigley Publishing in New York, N.Y.

This copy has very, very little bumping on the corners, the front cover is still in excellent condition, the spine is nearly perfect and the back cover is in excellent condition!

The only issues I could find are that someone put a light check mark by the movies they’ve seen (I assume, or maybe the movies they would like to see!) in the list of “The Great Hundred”, and the pages at the beginning of the “Press” section are “dog eared.”

This is a 1,096 page reference guide to all things that are (or were)  the 1955 motion picture and television industries.

This is a very nice, First Edition Copy of “Speaking Frankly” by James F. Byrnes.  This copy would be a great addition to any discriminating library, even with no dust jacket included.

Speaking Frankly is 324 pages of first hand, World War II history, and is copyright 1947 by Donald S. Russell, Trustee of the James F. Byrnes Foundation and published by Harper & Brothers.

Speaking Frankly is based on the notes, and contains copious amounts of the notes taken by James Byrnes during the end stages of WW II.  The adventures covered here begin with Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Yalta and Potsdam meetings in 1945 to Harry S. Truman the 21 Nation Peace Conference, Paris, October 1946.  In total there are 8 meetings or conferences and the words of countless world leaders contained herein.

This copy of Speaking Frankly is in nearly perfect shape with slight bumping to the lower corners of the cover, a little wear at the top and bottom of the spine, and two small marks (scratches) on the back cover.

The only foreign marks inside is a small red stamping, inside the front cover at the bottom of the map, stating “|| 30 1971.”  Where I have | is a small smudged mark in the book (see photo).  Very minor yellowing to a very few pages, most are as white as the day it rolled off the press!

In section 3 there are a total of 30 conversations, ranging from the above at the airport, to “in the department store” to “at the watchmakers” to “buying hats in Guayaquil” and finishing with “through the Panama Canal.”

Spine of the 1943 publication of Spoken Spanish by Charles Kany

This 1943 hardcover version of Spoken Spanish is a little under 6 3/4 inches tall by a little over 4 3/4 inches wide, with the cover being green with dark brown lettering and a dark brown picture on the front.

The cover of Spoken Spanish is in very, very good condition with the only blemish (that I can find) being a 3/4 of an inch tall by 1/8 of an inch wide stain at the lower front corner of the spine.

There is a pencil mark on the outside of the pages, which can be seen when the book is closed and your looking at the pages opposite the spine.

On the inside of Spoken Spanish, I have found absolutely NO marks, rips, tears, stains or any sort post publishing marks on any of the pages!  It almost appears as if the book was taken home, put on a shelf, and never picked up again.
