When ever you are going to use a piece of equipment that emits a flame ~ yes even this camp cooker~ be aware of the dangers.

These include people being able to

have free access to the equipment

the danger of being able to come too close to that equipment - even when it is in the cooling down phase.

Something nearby catching fire.... yes the grass is too near.

Danger to live forms of life underneath. The user here has placed the camp stove on concrete. Good thinking. The heat will not go through into the ground thus the microbes good to the earth will be safe.

Heat retention will occur.

Touch with the back of your hand to test for heat retention. When it is cool to touch then you may be able to safely remove and move the stove.

So if you intend to pack this stove away soon after the use make sure it is cool to touch - with the back of your hand.

In case of uncontrolled fire how are you going to put the flames out? Sort this out before you ignite the flame!

The differences between the canvas fly's that have been used here for years is the picture above are
The main poles are normal tent poles.
because of the positioning of the red side flies near the main stabilizing ropes [rope's out from the sides people are not going to be likely to run through under these ropes getting themselves either tripped up or garotted.
Remembering the safely of fires and other heat appliances can you see at least ten things unsafe in this picture.

Let me put it this way to start you off ... Where is the fire pit? and why would it be under canvas?

When you need a match to catch take a small compact amount of cotton. Wrap it. Fluff it. Add punk [dried leaves / grass around the cotton. Place these to things into middle of small Kindling area. Ignite flame. Place flame next to cotton wool ... it will burn well. Just feed the flames with small twigs now. Cotton ....---> from washing machine - very dried out - or use a 'internal flow reducer!!!!' [use you imagination here]

The first step is to lay our the inner on the ground. Work out which way the doors are going to be facing. Fix up the poles. In this tent there are a total of three. Two go from corner to corner -crossing over the middle. And one goes through the outer opening the front section of the outer.

Here is one of our Leaders explaining to three new Guides where to place the ends of the light weight pole into the tent hole. The Guide in the middle of the tent is experienced at putting this tent up. Note this Guide is not wearing shoes. That way the internal floor is less likely to get damaged.

Mean while there are actually two Guides [you cannot see them] holding the ends of the pole ready to place these ends into the outside corner slots.

After the second pole is in place then the Guide in the middle here just simply takes the toggle on the middle of the tent and loops it over both poles - and under the other material loop. This secures the poles to the tent.

People have the mistaken impression that you go camping by throwing a few things into the car, driving there, doing activities all day and someone else has set up the shelter for the night.

This system may work one day but I have never found it to be so. Life skills are something that excludes exporation of mistakes, celebration of successes and then evaluation of what went right, was done right in the wrong circumstances and what failed miserably. Next time things will be better as one experience builds upon another.

This tent inner is now up.

One of the practice nights getting the inner up.

Before any camp or tenting activity was entered into the Guides would spent weeks familiarizing themselves with tent protocol. The best way to achieve this was to actually put the tents up. They soon would realise that what worked for one tent type did not necessarily work for another. But the team work necessary was always emphasised. And it was better to get over it and get on with it it that not want to participate thus slowing everyone else down.

No matter what type of shelter
things got done successfully
when there was team work.

This particular purple tent is one of the new ones that a mother had purchased for her family. It was large enough to fit eight Guides in a sleeping arrangement.

First the tent inner had to be in place and then the tent outer put up over every thing.
Finally the inner of the tent is up. Then in would go all the bags and packs. That was until the leaders made sure the tent was safe to enter. Out came all the bags and neatly arranged they would be put back into under the outer lining.

The leaders waited until the tent had gone up a few times then came the challenge: To get the whole tent up, as a patrol, in less that 3 minutes. The older Guides worked out that with four people it was quicker than with 5 people or more.

There you are suck without a serviceable match. How then can you start a fire?

In this post there are suggestions
how to start a fire for both warmth and food. What you need to be aware of is that there are situations that this scenario does happen in. Safety while you obtain both warmth and food is your primary concern. Not gaining a spark that soon starts a blaze which is out of control.

Here are the steps you should follow pre-emptive of your fire igniting.

Prepare your work surface and fire place.

Is there a first aid box on hand.

What about something to put out the fire with?

Is there sufficient safety around the fireplace to avoid fire jumping out and causing uncontrolled fire blazes?

Will there always be an responsible coherent adult near by [very close] supervising the fire?

Listed below are a few ways of igniting a flame. Please note that the area around your intended fire should be free of dry materials that can ignite. This circular area is recommended to be 3 meters in diameter ... if not five.

The process of making pine cone fire lighters uses flammable wax and toxic chemicals. Don’t let your children play with them. If you have small children who put everything they touch into their mouths, don’t set the pine cone firestarters on the hearth where your child could eat or chew on the pinecones. This also aplies to a family pet. Also set them up high in case your toddler decides to throw them into the fire all at once when you answer the phone.
Two tent frames erected with a difference of at least 15cm to 22cm in height. Their distance apart depends on the size of the fly, but would be about 100cm to 130cm. The fly is pulled well down to the ground on the weather side, then over the lower frame, then over the higher frame and guy out the remaining canvas. Fly ropes on the high side may have to be temporarily lengthened with additional short pieces of rope. Face the high side into some natural protection such as a bank, if available and/or required. This would not be satisfactory with a fly smaller than 427cm x 427cm.
.Where did the shrubs I planted go again?.

I knew the grass was getting long. I was to mow around the shrubs that I had planted on Thursday. That is as soon as I had time off work and could also get the lawn mower and clippers down to the Hazelwood South Hall.

however I turned up on Wednesday last week to begin raking under the shrubs next to the gun clubs fence line and noticed that the shrubs and grass had all been mowed down. There were no sticks, plants or anything except mowed grass. The Calistamon that was so beautifully flowering was gone as well.

The next night at a Gipp's Guide meeting a discussion took place. I asked for help in lining a next shrub bed with bricks carried over from the "brickery' I had noted that the earth area that some party goers had lit a fire in was not mowed over. Instead this eyesore was carefully mowed around. The Brickery was left too. Logically If there are bricks the lawn mower man will not tamper with them. However if there is obviously long grass in one area strip then by all means mow it over. There could be something of value there! This time I intend to really well bang in the wooden poles deep into the ground. Lace the area with read and white warning tape [means do not enter this area]. The new shrubs will have already been planted to make use of this rainy period that we seem to be experiencing.

So in two Thursday's time there will be bricks in place and hopefully time to rake up the leaves from the other shrubs and mulch the new shrub area as well.

Creating a campfire dash

The following chemicals used sparingly are able to create a really great 'WoW' effect. But remember campfires are unforgettable for other reasons too. Just a little of the chemicals goes a really long way.

It is better to halve the amount you think you need.. at least twice. Just so that you are more controlled with what you are doing and the audience that has little ones does not become so scared that campfires are a means of fear and mental torture in the future.

Strontium chloride produces bright red flames

Magnesium sulphate (Epson Salts) gives white flames

Calcium chloride for blue flames.

Copper sulphate (blue vitrol) has a green flame

Thallium (Alum- used in pickle making) has a bright green flame

Baron salts (borax -20 mule team borax in the laundry aisle) has a yellowish-green flame

Potassium sulphate mixed 3 to 1 with potassium nitrate will show off a violet flame

Boric Acid for deep red flames

Mix the dryed red, white and blue pine scales and have a patriotic fire!

Most of these chemicals are available in the grocery store or pharmacy. Strontium chloride is used in aquariums so check your pet store for this one.
