<itunes:summary>I will remember Memorial Day 2012 as a night of nerddom. Look at that picture. Even Jeremy is wearing thick-rimmed glasses in spirit. This week, we talk with two of my favorite character actors of all time, David Anthony Higgins and James Urbaniak. Jeremy is one of those, too, but he's too much of a regular to really emphasize. That's a lie - I was so busy being amazed, Jeremy does most of the talking.

This is just an amazing, insane album from the gents at Monty Python with a HIDDEN SIDE to it. It will go down in history simply for having two tracks side-by-side, so designed that the listener was likely to hear something different each time, causing innumerable aneurysms. It gives us the best version of the Cheese Shop sketch, and it also was originally packaged as the free gift with an actual matching tie and handkerchief. You don't get albums-as-art anymore, so it's a treasure.

It's been a long time coming, but Jonah Ray is finally on the podcast. It's highly unlikely you've never heard of The Nerdist, but if you haven't, it's pretty much the best podcast out there. As a standup, vinyl comedy was part of his education, and Jonah talks to us this week about Emo Philips' brilliant E=MO Squared. We also get in a little talky-talk about his new 10" white vinyl record "Hello, Mr. Magic Plane Person, Hello." It was a HUGE thrill.

I forgot to admit this to Jonah, but I was - for a brief period - under the misapprehension that the term "emo," usually used to torture nerds with extra hair, was somehow linked back to Emo Philips. Like Jonah, my first exposure to Emo's weirdness was the classic Weird Al vehicle UHF. It wasn't until Jonah's recommendation that I first listened to what is now some of my favorite wordplay and weird character comedy. I'm over simplifying it, but it is wonderfully brilliant and worth a listen, especially if you've already sampled the more "traditional" fare, like Cosby, Carlin or Newhart.

This week, we speak with none other than Scott Aukerman. Host of the Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast and upcoming TV show, as well as a writer for Mr. Show and director of Between Two Ferns, Scott's work on his podcast network is clearly influenced by Carl and Mel's best work. He and his insanely brilliant guests improvise long-form host/guest pieces that will usually blow your mind. Listen in to exactly why Scott thinks you need to sit down and given this album a listen.

It comes to us courtesy of vinyl comedy connoisseur Mr. Cole Stratton. Co-host of the Pop My Culture Podcast and co-creator of SF Sketch Fest, he's a man of pure comedy tastes. Listen to him... taste comedy? No. But he's got some great things to say.

<itunes:summary>National Lampoon was, in its heyday, on the forefront of sketch comedy. This album proves it, and for many it was the first time hearing some of these up-and-coming comedians who are now household names - Bill Murray, Christopher Guest, Richard Belzer, Laraine Newman - and the list goes on.

And the man who brings the album to our collective attention this week is one Mr. Dave Holmes. Host of "A Drink With Dave," and "How Many People Does it Take" on H2, to name just two of his many projects, Dave tells us how this shaped his idea of comedy, and we're all the better for it in the end. Take a listen.

You've seen him on Conan and all over your TV. Matt Knudsen has a remarkably clean act for a guy who wants to talk about Dice, and that's what makes this such a fun episode - it's not his act. Listen to Matt talk about his influences, comedy in general, and a little about Dice.

Whether you're an SNL fan or not, you have to appreciate his skill. I've picked a few random clips (those that were available online) but there is SO much more to find in his HBO specials, his SNL best of, and The Dana Carvey show, which gave us - besides great sketches - Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell.

<itunes:summary>Once a month, I'm part of an undeniably awesome theater experience. Since November of 2011, "A Drinking Game" has taken live stage readings of the best films of the 80s and combined them with a custom drinking game for each film. Not only does the audience drink along - so do the actors. It's been so successful, it recently spun off into a satellite show in Minneapolis. I'm so lucky to get to work with these people, that I wanted you to meet as many of them as I could squeeze in before we had to get started this last Saturday during "Die Hard," in which I played Hans Gruber.

First up is Brett Schlank. Co-creator (with Natalie Lynch, pictured above) of A Drinking Game and one of my favorite people, Brett comes from a long line of entertainers. He talks with me for a few minutes about Bob and Doug McKenzie's "Great White North."

Next is Joe Nicchi. Not only is he hilarious, but his experience with stand-up comedy is unique - he practically grew up in his father's comedy club. He talks about Mitch Hedburg, being chauffeur to the comics, and what it's like to see the best comics we've never heard of.

Anthony Lerner is the star of this month's show. He and I were at least twice enemies - he as Biff Tannen and I as Marty McFly, he as Westley and I as Vizzini & Count Rugen. This week, it happens again, as we square off and he sends me to my death that will catch up with him two drinking games later. Anthony opens up about his love of Bill Cosby and comedy in general, as well as having to say "fuck" a lot.

I met Alex Salem when he first rehearsed with us for "Ghostbusters," in which he played Winston Zeddemore. In "Die Hard," he plays Al Powell (or, as our audience referred to him regularly, Carl Winslow) with aplomb. This week, he takes some time to talk with me about listening to David Cross.

A thank you to the entire cast and crew for an amazing show. Jaymes Wheeler, Alyson King Wheeler, Joe Nicchi, Anthony Lerner, Natalie Lynch, Jeremy Guskin, Alex Salem and Brett Schlank, as well as Justin Wheeler and Jen.

He's given you some of your favorite Late Night characters: Kilty McBagpipes, The Interrupter, Frankenstein and The Ghost of Artie Kendall, just to name a few. Brian Stack is here to tell us how The Replacements got him through some tough times and discuss how one band can break the rules and still be funny.

Brian also suggests you give this a listen.

She makes funny songs like "Fuck Me, Ray Bradbury" and "I Steal Pets," and is about to write for a sketch show on Cartoon Network. She's Rachel Bloom and she was kind enough to sit down and talk with us about the man, the myth, the (formerly) mustachioed, Weird Al. Also, dreams and dicks.

<itunes:summary>If you think of Lenny Bruce, you probably think of the guy who took on censorship and was a martyr for the cause of free speech. Maybe you've seen the movie "Lenny" and associate him with Dustin Hoffman's huggable heroin addict. Your first thought might not be that Lenny Bruce was a guy who told jokes. And that's why we're here.

Luckily, this week we've got backup, in the form of Matt Besser, master improviser and brilliant comedic actor. Though he might not point you to this album to discover Lenny Bruce, this is the album that clearly blew his mind and was integral in his understanding of his own craft. Listen in, listen up, and check this album out.

<itunes:summary>Before he was Alvy Singer - before he was Woody Allen, even - he was still a writer named simply Woody Allen. He was turning his behind-the-scenes skills from writing on "Your Show of Shows" and for the stage into a persona to accompany his work. Though its been said that he hated doing stand-up, there's no doubt that his point of view ended up so succinct and focused as a result of this character work that the film work that followed wouldn't be nearly what we have today.

Even if you don't like his later films (I suggest you just start from the top, chronologically, and stop when you get bored), you should listen to the classic bits archived on this two-disc set. It chronicles an evolution from an inexperienced standup and brilliant writer, to a man who merged the form with the content brilliantly.

At the end of the day, Eddie Murphy's self-titled 1982 album is what you'd expect. Rushed, somewhat inexperienced and shocking simply for the sake of it. For all the times Eddie Murphy said something homophobic, sexist or racist after this, listening to this will give you an idea of what it sounds like to not wrap much content around it. Fear not, we will soon be going over his best stuff. You know, the stuff he eventually apologized for.

Until recently, Lehrer was a university professor who got out of the satire business for a number of reasons. He has been quoted as saying "Political satire became obsolete when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Prize." That about sums it up. Give it a listen.
Also, given Tumblr’s inherent limits (if we post more than 20... anythings, it starts pushing old episodes off of iTunes), we’re moving feed hosts, so there MAY be some iTunes issues in the coming days. Please let us know if you notice an issue before we do: jason@comedyonvinyl.com

Just know that despite the fact that we didn't talk much about Zero (his comedy was on the stage and screen), he was a great actor, and Mel Brooks' "The Producers" wouldn't have been the same without him intimidating the hell out of Gene Wilder. In many ways, we wouldn't have the same Gene Wilder. Take a listen and, as always, have a Merry Thing.

<itunes:summary>We waited too long to get to this album, since its among the first albums I ever listened to, and it simply blew my mind. What's disappointing is its the first one I simply have not been able to find locally on vinyl - despite having it in the secret Comedy on Vinyl Vaults somewhere deep in the woods of Upstate New York at my mom's house (it also explains why we're pointing to an image of the album cover on my phone). THAT said, this is going to be one of those albums I absolutely DEMAND you purchase immediately. I choose to sample these tracks without killing the value of purchasing the album, but believe me, it was very tempting to give you "Seven Words" in its entirety, as this is the greatest version there is. That said, I didn't - so go buy it.
Though people have treated George Carlin as though he was following the work of Lenny Bruce, Carlin was never an activist, and no matter what you thought of his changing onstage persona, he remained a comedian, unlike Lenny Bruce. "Stand-up philosopher" is a phrase bandied about in this podcast, and I've always felt it fit George Carlin to a T. Comedians are, by trade, thinkers before speakers. Usually the speaking takes the form of a joke - Carlin weaves the traditional joke in with pure "one-on-one" conversation, letting you discover his thought process as he helps you understand your own. All this, on top of being a bad-ass who did, indeed, challenge the FCC and, whether he tried to or not, changed the way the US and its government looks at "profanity," makes George Carlin a legend. Do yourself a favor and discover this album, if you haven't already.

<itunes:summary>After Monty Python, Eric Idle continued the sketch comedy television with Rutland Weekend Television, which featured "The Seventh Python," Neil Innes. Best known beyond The Rutles as an amazing absurd satirist, Innes brought a musical legitimacy that Idle, with impressive musical credentials of his own, likely couldn't match. Also, Innes did a dead-on John Lennon.

Hardly the first mock-documentary, this is one of the first - if not THE first musical-themed film in the genre. A pretty literal parallel of the actual history of The Beatles, The Rutles is impressive, if only for its attention to detail. The songs are, in many cases, dead-ringers for actual Beatles songs (which apparently caused a legal problem or two), and the story an absurd twist and comment on Beatlemania - an obsession that, no matter how you feel about The Beatles, is easily seen as one of the strangest phenomena to ever ripple through pop culture.

<itunes:summary>Mel Brooks may have made the name he has today with a unique brand of parody, but Young Frankenstein is arguably his masterpiece, and is no doubt the beginning of a brand of pastiche that has informed the work of every great filmmaker of the last four decades. Self-awareness without having to mug, genuine drama without a sly wink, and real, stone-faced, honest acting make this more than just what Mel Brooks calls a "spoof."
As Dan points out in this episode, "Young Frankenstein" is a spiritual sequel to its namesake, and even cursory knowledge of the original "Frankenstein" is enough to get the basics. That said, it's still a good, human story, given to us through some of the best slapstick ever put on film.

The appeal of this album is clear, even to comedy nerds who have never touched marijuana in their lives. The characters are great, due in large part to Cheech's voice characterizations, and the situations are not, in any way, difficult to understand. Add the fact that Cheech & Chong were smart and considerate to add production values to something that could easily rely on mere mentions of illegal activity for its laughs, and you have one of the greatest comedy compilations out there. It outshines the last album we covered, and - for Dan and I at least - rivals Monty Python Sings, which we will surely cover in the future.

<itunes:summary>It's taken much too long to get to Monty Python, given our collective love for the group, perhaps best demonstrated by how many Holy Grail references make their way into this podcast. This is a great primer album, though it makes little sense to listen to this until after watching the series and, of course, Holy Grail and Life of Brian.
They were the gods of irreverence and detractors of the end portion of a sketch. Inspired by The Goons, Ernie Kovacs and a host of other insane comedy-types, Monty Python was something new to their UK audience, but was something mind blowing for an originality-starved US audience that wouldn't see their first episodes until a few years after they originally aired. Nerds everywhere rejoiced and further found one more reason to believe they would always be alone. Until they met that special someone who could also say "anarcho-syndicalist commune" without breaking a sweat. Listen and enjoy.

<itunes:summary>For the first time, I'm going to recommend you actually watch something before listening to this week's album (links are below). Why? Well, because Ernie Kovacs is the godfather of experimental TV. Which is why, as a comedy writer, I was blown away that my introduction to him was from non-comedian (but hilarious person) Adam X. Storm.
Adam's connection to Ernie Kovacs is a personal one, as well as one of the art appreciator. This week we talk about the clear impact that Ernie Kovacs has had on the world of comedy since the 50s - from Monty Python to Tim & Eric. Whether a comedian cites him as an influence or not, there's no doubt that he was the first one to really play with the medium.
Watch these and get a taste - as personally chosen by Adam himself.

<itunes:summary>He was Troy McClure. He was Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer. He was Bill McNeil. Most importantly, he was a brilliant comedic actor, and loved by everyone he worked with. He also inspired some of us to do what it is we do. That was reason enough to make our first live episode a tribute to him.

This week we were honored to be joined by Vicki Lewis, whose love for Phil Hartman made this one big, amazing Phil-Hartman-lovefest. Vicki let us in on who Phil Hartman was - and what he still means - to her as a person and a creative person. In this episode, Jeremy also reads a wonderful message from Melanie Hutsell, and we speak with Paul Hartmann, Phil's brother, and Angel Rosenthal, organizer of the "Phil Hartman for the Walk of Fame" movement on Facebook - both of whom kindly sat around for a long time waiting for a call.

We also talk about a Poco album called "Legends," which matters only because Phil Hartman designed the album cover, and it was his favorite piece. Phil Hartman was a genius and renaissance man, and deserves to be celebrated. His 63rd birthday would have been next week, so celebrate as you will - watch Houseguest for the millionth time, perhaps. Or listen to this episode again. That's what I'll be doing.

For the uninitiated, you might look at the album art and turn away. But do yourself a favor - think of what you might already know about Steve Martin, and then look at this album cover again. Think about why that guy would ever put a balloon on his head. Then throw that assumption out, because there's no pretension here. It's JUST COMEDY. Pure and simple. On that note: enjoy.

<itunes:summary>It didn't take long for Richard Pryor's work to crop back up on Comedy on Vinyl, which is mostly due to popular demand. Not only is "...Is it Something I Said?" still our most-downloaded episode, but two of my favorite comedic minds specifically said they needed to talk to me about this one. And I do mean to me, folks, as Live on the Sunset Strip is, sadly, fairly new to me. But not to my detriment - there are some amazing moments on this album, and it clearly had an impact on this week's guests - Mike Preister and Jeremy Guskin.
It's an interesting change of pace for Richard Pryor, if only spurred on by what he took as the necessity to talk about a very public drug problem. But by 1982, and this album, he's clearly learned a lot, and his comedy shows it. Equally mature and child-like (as all of his stories have some innocence peeking through, Live on the Sunset Strip takes is also of a rare breed of film, given the popularity of the concert movie of the same name. It's a brilliant piece of work that you need to listen to. But first, listen to us tell you why.

<itunes:summary>If it wasn't for this album, the 70s arguably wouldn't have been the 70s. Before "pot culture" and "pot humor," there were two brilliant sketch comedians who also talked a lot about pot. Those guys were Cheech and Chong. I wouldn't be who I am if it wasn't for Cheech and Chong - my first attempts at audio comedy, at 13 - if a bit rough - were just Dan Gomiller and I doing our version of Cheech and Chong, sans the drug humor we couldn't relate to.
Luckily, we aren't the only squares upon whom the indelible mark of Cheech and Chong's humor was left. Enter Bob Wiltfong, the man you've seen as Nationwide Insurance's World's Greatest Spokesperson in the World and as a version of himself on The Daily Show. His earliest memory of Cheech and Chong was "Sister Mary Elephant," the star track from this album. Bob joins me this week from the Second City Theatre in Hollywood to discuss the comedy of two of the last comedians to really use the comedy album as an art form. Even if they were talking about getting stoned a bunch.

This particular episode forgoes the convention of being clip-heavy, or even clip-light (there's just the one, really) as we had a lot to talk about with this week's guest, the incomparable Jeremy Guskin. You've seen him all over your television screens, possibly asked him to leave, and then realized he was so real you thought he was in the room with you. THAT is how good he is. And this week he tells us how inspirational and confoundingly hilarious The Firesign Theatre is, and how important it is to him as a comedic person.

<itunes:summary>This week we skip back to last week's comedian's (Richard Pryor) biggest influence. Bill Cosby influenced two generations in two entirely different ways. He broke ground with his stand up comedy, became the first black man to star in a TV drama, and then headed up what was arguably the most successful (financially and culturally) sitcom of the 80s.
This is Bill Cosby's first album, and he's in fine form. Some bits would become classics and, while others are a bit dated, Bill's conversational style was born here. The classics that followed were just an extension of his ability to keep talking with you, and that's why it remains timeless. Damn the time period, damn the medium - telling a good story will always keep people listening.
For those of you who have been listening since episode 1 (or have gone back and check those first two out) - thanks a bunch for sitting through episodes one and two. We understand that they might have been a bit... experimental for most tastes, but we hope there was something remotely enlightening in there that you could make out, even if it was subliminal.

<itunes:summary>This week: three white guys talk about Richard Pryor. In this episode, we're joined by the hilarious and talented Mike Preister. You've seen his work on TV for over a decade, and now he's been kind enough to talk with us about his earliest, biggest comedy influence. Namely: Richard Pryor's fourth album, "...Is It Something I Said?" Raw, character-driven and "profane" (if you believe in such a thing - and for that matter, ignore the stupid parental advisory sticker on this CD cover, the only public image I could use), this album illustrates everything that made Richard Pryor groundbreaking. Not only did he speak to an untapped audience, but he did it in character.
Never one to simply spit jokes at the audience, Richard Pryor shows all of the energy and commitment that could have made him a huge box office star. Though that never quite materialized, this album stands as a clear example of why he has left an indelible mark on the comedy and comedians that came after him.

 <itunes:summary>EPISODE #2: The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart (1960)
In this episode, Jason Klamm, Dan Gomiller and Mike Worden are joined by writer/podcaster Ari Jarvis to discuss 1960s comedy phenomenon Bob Newhart in his premiere album, "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart."
Not so much a rarity, this album still serves as a flashback to the days when the proof was really in the pudding. Small-time, talented no-name gets a break because he liked to entertain at friends' parties. The tapes got passed around, and Bob Newhart flew into our living rooms, sort of like a confused pigeon. Forty years before Matt and Trey got their break with a hand-traded animated Christmas card, Bob Newhart changed the face of comedy by making it marketable again. All, ironically enough, by making fun of advertising and marketing on a regular basis.
