How many of you like a clean looking kitchen sink?Don't we all?We make sure our kitchen sink is nice and shiny especially when we are having friends or family over for dinner.After a long fun filled night of family time and dinner,we load the dishwasher and call it a long night.All this is fine until we get up the next day only to see the kitchen sink all dirty and smells bad.How did that happen?It was all clean and shiny right?Well,it was until we forgot to turn on the incinerator to wash and crush all the junk we just pushed down from the sink.
For many of us Christians,this is such a perfect example of our daily life.We make sure we dress up well,look fresh,smell good on the outside.We read the Bible ,go to church and pretend all is 'hunky dory'.But if we do not allow God's word to be inside us to wash out all our unseen stench,we just like the kitchen sink can just be clean on the outside but dirty on the inside.The Bible says,"Man looks on the outside,but God looks on the inside."
The recent commercial by Dove,which went viral last week,is just an example of how we tend to think we look,versus how we look to the other person.So as Christians we ought to always be vigilant on our side and make sure we are walking with Him and asking Him to guide us in all our daily life.Ask Him to make us beautiful like Him,so that others may see His beauty in us,others may see His radiant light shine through us.Let us make sure we turn on the 'incinerator' always to crush all the evil spirits and thoughts down the drain.Amen!

Is God in Control?

God..is the blessed controller of all things,the King over all Kings and the Master of all Masters.

The most important assumption in the minds of many is:If God is both powerful and good,why is there so much suffering,so much pain,so much heartache in the world?God is either good and not all powerful,or He is powerful and not all good.
The Bible teaches us that God is Sovereign and He is good.God has a two-fold objective of this providence.His own glory and the good of His people.God never pursues His glory at the expense of the good of His people,nor does He seek our good at the expense of His glory.He has designed His eternal purpose so that His glory and our good are inextricably bound together.This should be the ultimate comfort and reminder for us.If we are going to trust God in adversity,we must believe that just as certainly as God will allow nothing to subvert His glory,so He will allow nothing to spoil the good He is working out in us and for us.
In order to better understand and benefit from the biblical teaching of God's providence,we need to also consider another aspect of providence:the sustaining action of God in upholding and preserving His creation.

God Knows Us!!

Someone has expressed these three truths as they relate to us in this way:"God in His love always wills what is best for us.In His wisdom He always knows what is best,and in His sovereignty He has the power to bring it about."
The sovereignty of God is asserted,either expressly or implicitly,on almost every page of the Bible.
Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it?Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come?(Lamentations 3:37-38)

This passage can offend many people.They find it difficult to accept that both calamities and good things come from God.Jesus himself affirmed God's sovereignty in calamity when Pilate said to Him,"Don't you realize I have power to either free you or to crucify you?"Jesus replied,"You have no power over me if it were not given to you from above"(John 19:10-11).Jesus acknowledged God's sovereign control over His life.
Because God's sacrifice of His son for our sins is such an amazing act of love toward us,we tend to overlook that it was for Jesus an excruciating experience beyond all we can imagine.It was for Jesus in His humanity a calamity sufficient to cause Him to pray,"My Father,if it is possible,may this cup be taken from me"(Mathew 26:39),but He did not waver in His assertion of God's sovereign control.
Whatever our particular calamity or adversity may be,we may be sure that our Father has a loving purpose in it.God does not exercise His sovereignty capriciously,but only in such a way as his infinite love deems best for us.Jeremiah wrote,"Though he brings grief,He will show compassion,so great is His unfailing love.For He does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men"(Lamentations 3:32-33)
Oh,the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!!How unsearchable His judgements,and His paths beyond tracing out!(Romans 11:33)
God's plan and His ways of working out His plan are frequently beyond our ability to fathom and understand.We must learn to trust when we don't understand.In order to trust God we must know Him in an intimate,personal way.David said in Psalm 9:10,"Those who know your name will trust in you,for you Lord,have never forsaken those who seek you."

Can You Trust God?

All of us face adversity in various forms and at different times.Life is difficult.

Adversity and its accompanying emotional pain comes in many forms.There may be the heartache of an unhappy marriage,or the disappointment of a miscarried pregnancy,or grief over a spiritually indifferent or rebellious child.All of these circumstances and score more contribute to the anxiety and emotional pain we all experience at various times and in varying degrees.
On a larger scale we read in our newspapers or see on the evening news instances of grief,and pain on a massive scale.there is war,terrorism,earthquakes,famine,racial injustice,murder,and exploitation occurring daily in various parts of the world.All this makes us wonder and ask,"where is God?"
Even when life seems to be going our way and our daily path seems pleasant and smooth,we do not know what the future hold."We do not know what a day may bring forth".Proverbs 27:1.
Do you have such a relationship with God and such a confidence in Him that you believe He is with you and in your adversity even though you do not see any evidence of His presence and His power?
Obeying God is worked out within well-defined boundaries of God's revealed will.Trusting God is worked out in an arena that has no boundaries.It is just as important to trust God as it is to obey Him.When we disobey God we defy His authority and despise His holiness.But when we fail to trust God we doubt His sovereignty and question his goodness.God views our distrust of Him as seriously as He views our disobedience.In order to trust God,we must always view our adverse circumstances through the eyes of faith,not of sense.And just as the faith of salvation comes through hearing the message of the gospel(Romans 10:17),so the faith to trust God in adversity comes through the word of God alone.
In the arena of adversity,the scripture teaches us three essential truths about God-truths we must believe if we are to trust Him in adversity.They are:

God is completely sovereign.
God is infinite in wisdom.
God is perfect in love.

God and Satan are engaged in ongoing conflict,and those who choose Christ's side join an army unlike any other.It is an army that does battle with spiritual weapons.Unless we learn to use them,we will be sitting ducks for Satan's subtle strategies;he will use every trick he knows to frighten us into retreat or lure us over to his side.
Our strategy is threefold;put on a spiritual armor,produce spiritual fruit,and practice spiritual disciplines.
Ephesians 6:13 says ,"Put on every piece of God's armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in times of evil."
When we choose to follow Jesus,sin doesn't immediately lose its appeal on us;it simply loses its power over us.Until God gives us glorified bodies,we will remain not only susceptible to sin but also inclined to it.That is why we need to watch our ways.If we continually choose sin we will suffer consequences of broken peace,and lost joy.But if we continue to pursue spiritual renewal,our lives will become whole and fruitful.

Jesus taught we cannot serve two masters.The nature of Christianity is to be caught between good and evil forces as we attempt to fulfill our God-given tasks.Some forces are external, like those placed on us by friends,relatives,co-workers,employers or church leaders.Others are internal;they are the ones that involve our personal dreams,ambitions, and goals.
Many seek God in times of trouble and surrender the offending pieces of their lives for a time but take it back when it is over,still believing they know better than God what will bring them meaning,purpose and ,pleasure.If we cannot lay every aspect of our life before God without his thorough examination,we have not said "It's Yours."And we cannot experience spiritual renewal until we have surrendered everything to God-including every desire and ambition.
As we let go of selfish ambitions,God can begin to show us what is behind our drive to achieve and why we hold on so tightly to the things we acquire.When we see the truth about our motives and agree with God about our values,he can begin changing our desires to match His.

What Does Surrender Look Like

When we surrender we become like clay in God's hands.Allowing God's grace to mold us means putting our lives into His hands and saying,"Do with me as you will".This requires malleability and the willingness to accept that we may not be permitted to accomplish everything we set out to do.We may be unable to use our gifts the way we want to use them.It means allowing the potter to reshape us without our arguing.
A picture of surrendered life can be seen in Blaise Paschal.In 1659 Paschal began writing an apology for the Christian faith that he planted to spend the next ten years completing.After beginning his project,Paschal contracted a severe illness,and he was never able to develop the work as he had originally envisioned.

Rather than wrestling with God and rebelling at His unexplainable will,Paschal surrendered to the course his life had taken.He spent his last days passing out blankets and food to the poor.When he died he left behind his "Thoughts",the undeveloped beginning of his lifework.Today his well-known writings,entitled the Pensees continues to be studied and taught by theologians and philosophers.Paschal had seen the course God set before him and humbly followed it,leaving the consequences with God.God did use him greatly,not in the way he supposed.His surrender is an example to us.When he humbled himself,God lifted him to minister to the ages.

Above all other examples is Jesus Himself.He surrendered to the will of His Father throughout His earthly ministry.He told His disciples,"the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me."(John 14:31 NIV).The way of surrender lead Him to His knees.He knew that the Cross awaited Him when He knelt to pray.But listen to His prayer:"Father,if you are willing take this cup of suffering away from me.Yet I want your Will to be done, not mine"(Luke 22:42).Then an angel appeared and strengthened Him.But Jesus,still in anguish,prayed even more earnestly,and His sweat fell like drops of blood to the ground.

Surrender is scary before we do it-even when we're surrendering to Jesus-but the rewards to ourselves and to others are immeasurable.Surrender does not come without pain or struggle.But it is worth it.Hebrews 12:2-3(NIV) says:Let us fix our eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith,who for the joy set before Him endured the cross,scorning its shame,and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men,so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Benefits of Surrender

When we stop trying to clean up our shattered hopes,twisted plans,and broken agendas,God has room to work.He can remove the clutter,restore the good,and bring order and beauty out of our chaos.God can be amazingly creative when we get out of His way and give Him room to work.
We can be relieved of guilt,failure and regret that so often accompany disappointments.
When we recognize that God and Goad alone has the power to realign our lives according to His will,we will be able to relax and await His timely intervention.
Surrendering to God will lead us away from sin.When we stop planting seeds of sin,we no longer will have to reap its deadly harvest.Troubles come to all but there is devastation that strikes the ungodly with ferocity as a direct result of sin.Surrender to God will spare us this.
"The righteous person faces many troubles,but the Lord comes to the rescue each time"(Psalm 34:19).

Taking Responsibility for Our Minds

God calls his people to love Him with heart,mind,soul,and strength.Each of us is responsible to study God's Word,to handle His truth accurately,and to participate with Him in the renewing of our minds."Do not conform to the patterns of this world,but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.(Romans 12;2).

It is not always easy to identify patterns of worldly thinking.They become so familiar that we seldom think of them as worldly.One example of a worldly thought pattern is that we seldom question the idea that people over the age of seventeen can fill their minds with garbage and remain mentally unpolluted.While it may be true that people of a certain age ought to have enough maturity not to imitate the behaviour they see in movies or on television,it is faulty to assume that people of any age can remain unaffected by what they see or hear.Just because we are adults doesn't mean that our brains have become disengaged from our senses.What we see and hear does affect how we think and behave.And just because we have the legal right to participate in certain activities does not mean that we have the moral right to do so.
What we put into our minds via our senses determines whether we will be conformed to the world or transformed into the likeness of Christ.We transform our minds by filling them with God's Word.We must accept responsibility to renew our minds daily through prayer, reading and meditating on God's word.

Our Enemy The Devil-temptation

Satan has three basic strategies that he uses over and over.Although he adapts them for different people in different situations,he hasn't updated much since his encounter with Eve in the Garden of Eden.First,he tempts us to doubt God.The he suggests that we test God.And finally he implies that he,not God can give us what we need.He has used these tactics so often that by now we should laugh in his face when he tries them on us.Sadly,however,satan seems to be the one doing most of the laughing.He is still deceiving us because we think of him as repulsive,foul-smelling,fire breathing monster rather than as the beautiful creature scripture states that he is.

Even though we all want to be forgiven,pride often stands in the way of asking for it.We would rather carry the guilt rather than admit our failure.With this comes rebellion and self-centeredness,and eventually self-destruction.Sin seeps in, only to find things getting deeper in despair and enduring more bitterness.
The solution to this kind of feeling is to be able to look people in the eye and feel no shame.Write,call or talk to every person who we think we have hurt and ask them to forgive.This can be done only when we surrender our will to God and acknowledge the seriousness of the matter.At times like this intimacy with God seems a remote possibility.But our God is a loving God who loves to listen.The purpose of making amends is not to make ourselves feel better,especially at the expense of others,it is to obey Jesus and change the direction of our lives.There is a wonderful Golden Rule when seeking forgiveness:Don't intrude on the life of someone you've hurt,even to make restitution,if you wouldn't want the person to the same to you under the same circumstances.
Whatever it is,we should not be surprised that it is difficult.If it were easy,we probably would have done it before now.But it must be done,not only for the sake of those injured,but for our own spiritual well-being.
