Yes- we all miss the articles ! Hopefully Walt will bring back CBD in 2026.

Right now he is making too much money on ebay. Have you seen the prices that he is getting on his weekly ice collectibles auctions ?? Must be raking it in from Canadian collectors who no longer wish to buy from the USA !

Thankfully, the silly 'Top 10' lists have stopped ! C'mon Walt- get off yer arse & bring back CBD, your public awaits !!

Have a Great Holiday, folks !!- LF

While the July 24th Dell Four Colour piece was awhile ago I found my notes today and since it is Friday afternoon I allow for some bit of fun away from research. It is still a bit odd as to what was going on with this title? Constant odds and ends of stuff. The volume of material allows for much varilence of opinion on your choices. Paintings (and photographs) are not proper for comic book covers as a user at the time. I was reading the Tom Corbett books of the day and to not see an improvement on the Glanzman illustrations in the book on the cover of the comic was disappointing. #4 The Lone Ranger does not wear a red shirt nor does he drive a stage coach. Is there a copy right issue here? It looks more like Red Ryder. Twice you guys suggested Art Deco: #9 Smiling Jack, which is simply poor drawing, is not anywhere near Art Deco or anything else. Flash Gordon #5 a delicious piece but is not art deco. What is unusual is that it has trees and greenery in stead of architecture. Some years ago a friend and i tried to create an exhibition of gardens in sci-fi. We could not get very far past Silent Running and abandoned the idea. #3 Tinker Bell in 1959 does not work. It late to the story and possibly going for money. #2 You know that those are not elves right? They are dwarfs lifted from Snow White. Barks is fine but the subject is not interesting. Porky Pig as a Mountie is interesting, so is anything by Walt Kelly for his Pogo comics. I actually paid the extra 5¢ for them. The Brownies always wonderful and King of the Royal Mounted. If Red Ryder was a four Colour Dell I would include Fred Harman. Have a good weekend.

yeah, I liked this list...it's a fun era...and quite timely with the passing of Jim Shooter who had a big hand in these toy-based books.

now...ROM....I find these books surprisingly good reading...I only have maybe 10 issues but enjoy them!

Super pets, I could use one right now with all the animals attacking and destroying my feeders on the deck, (I'm talking about you Raccoons)

Speaking of, I need a super cat, my cat can't deal with them downstairs and upstairs at night without at least the power to fly. :(

Its not much of a Playmate either :)

Speaking of comics I prefer Krypto the super dog and day even on a dog day

that is VERY strong for an ungraded #95! I upgraded my copy to a VF/NM in the boom and it cost me $200us - so that's quite a hike!

Speaking of books after #94 that deserve respect:

Underrated book: X-Men #96 1st Moira McTaggart - those of us that read the generational change that was Powers/House of X have an understanding of why this should be much bigger than it is...plus..a Scottish housekeeper who goes from Hello to wielding an M-16 within a few pages of her introduction - how can you not love this character!

Here’s a request :
The 10 (?) EARLIEST covers that show a superhero with a torn costume.
I’m thinking these covers could serve as indicators of the shift to comic book heroes that were more vulnerable. Neals Adams has a lot of them, I think. Not sure if his are the earliest.

My memory could be faulty, but I seem to recall a goofy cover with Lois sewing up a rip in Superman’s costume. That wouldn’t count.

I am betting it was editorial reasons that Congo Bill cover isn’t better. All the figures are rendered beautifully… they are simply stacked in a less then exciting manner but, they accommodate the word balloons. Love the original Nick Fury and kept its entire Strange Tales run along with a Nick Fury 1. Good stuff!

That quality Congo Bill #1? Really good. I had one in a plastic box at one point and I don't think it was that good. If I win that one I'll actually pay for it.

The amount of inventory in that warehouse makes me want to run out and dump everything. Is that a pile of Longbow Hunters? I will have to tell CGC to stop the grading process for mine and return it, I was hoping for $$$ from the sale of that one.

My guess on your Beware Terror Tales #3 backcover is Bernard Baily who of course was a regular DC Golden Age artist on the big titles and characters. The same “host” character appears on the covers of most early issues of Beware and he drew many of the covers, including the ones for #2, 3 and 4.

I’d expect the other image is pulled from another Fawcett horror cover but not finding a match; a close blob is on another Beware cover. Maybe he knocked it off especially for the ad, since he was a house artists. This Magazine is Haunted had no matches there, but some more great horror covers also. Fawcett was tops on this stuff stuff (and inside was often George Evans and Bob Powell—these are close competitors with EC’s horror titles.

Baily was in his prime on horror comics and worked for several companies…he started his own company in 1943. It did four specialty comics with Operas, probably only circulated in NYC or maybe Chicago and other big cities? .25 I think it was…Faust, Aida, Carmen and Rioletto…very collectible and scarce, printed on stiff paper, 16pgs, in black, white and red. I still need two of them myself. He drew Carmen on his own.

"maybe we would have expected a bit more from a 6.0" - I certainly did. Brilliant pickup by the savvy winner of Nelvana!

Perhaps if that sharp winner had not been tapped out at that point he/she would have pursued the Rocket and Wow.

"I estimate it at being a fairly niche enterprise of no more than a couple of hundred" - let's have some more enthusiasm, shall we? I think the backstory of Canadian comics makes them super-cool for any comic collector anywhere. (And I say that with total objectivity.)

“I estimate it at being a fairly niche enterprise of no more than a couple of hundred” – let’s have some more enthusiasm, shall we? I think the backstory of Canadian comics makes them super-cool for any comic collector anywhere. (And I say that with total objectivity.)

Great job guys. I enjoyed it and learned some things too. That first Batmobile cover has also been a favorite of mine. Still the best Batmovile to my mind. And I’m with you guys on motorcycles in the 1940s comics—there are at least a couple superlative Captain America covers with motorcycles, I love ‘em. I know Schomberg did a couple himself. Also there’s a wonderful Miss Masque on a wild streamlined motorcyle while Black Terror looks on; I have a xerox copy of it on my office wall. America’s Best #26! I had an epiphani a while back and realized I loved airplane covers—which may help explain why I’ve always collected Blackhawk—those akward, lumbering, massive Grumman planes they flew with twin engines are just classics. Probably got 2 miles to a gallon of airplane fuel! And again Batman comes in with the Batplane; his designing a mineature prototype of it with Robin alongside is one of THE iconic Batman covers. I hope you guys tackle 1940s superhero vehicles, that will be fun and I bet you point out some I’ve missed….And then there are parachute covers….!!!

Walt, I've already had stern words with my mother - she is not to die and leave me selling the 220+ teapots in her collection!

In all seriousness - having an exit strategy is important for all of us collectors - how is it to go, will you do it? will your loved ones disburse it, how would that look like? Don't wait until you're looking Death in the face to start thinking about it (and your collection too).

Morning everyone, I know nothing of the train collecting hobby but due to my step-father passing away I've been selling his Walkman collection - it's been amazing - I have 300 comics for sale on my eBay page and they barely get a glace whilst these Walkmen have caused a feeding frenzy - my hypothesis is that whilst there are a smaller number of Walkmen collectors in the world the actual supply of these machines is even smaller still. We all know this but it bares repeating; the number of Marvel or DC books is massive, there isn't much out there in the silver/bronze age that is actually rare (and modern age, well, that's manufactured scarcity, not the same thing imho). Walkmens appear to be less demand but mush less supply. Past 3 months: $300 in comic book sales, $25,000 in Walkman. It's supply and demand and nostalgia and life stage (disposable income) all coming together.

It's to the point where I've added a little blurb that I'll trade Walkmen for silver-age ASM! Surely one of these guys has a pile of Ditko/Romita books lying around....a man can but hope!

Wayne, I'm a big fan of the Galactus Trilogy, I've always thought it to be the top arc put out by Marvel in the 60s, and brilliance of the way they dialed down #51 on the heels of it was too much to ask. I think Lee and Kirby cracked the code here and this achievement established the new beachhead for others to launch from. I'm not seeing its ties to todays politics though, I think I'd more lean towards one syndicate running another out of town, they busted through on a pendulum and, as pendulums tend to do, its swinging well past the point most people intended it to. There must be a comic story that follows this ?

Well I was hoping you and your crew of readers might inform me on this question. Marvel arose in the 1960s because college kids were taken by this new form of comics. I was one of the curious.
I was filing things the other day and came across the 28.November. 2021 NYT Book Review of All of the Marvels: A Journey to the Ends of the Biggest Story Ever Told by Douglas Wolk (Penguin Press, 2021) Junot Diaz is the reviewer of this book I have not read.

Junot states that in issue that Wolk thinks that in #51 of The Fantastic Four Jack Kirby and Stan Lee 'hit the motherlode; discovered the precise amount of human misery you need to inflict on a superhero in order to sell the galactic and fantastic, to make it real"

He goes on to say 'The galactic fantastic without human anguish: kid stuff
Human anguish without the galactic: soap opera

But the two blended together in the right proportions equaled a new type of imaginative vibranium (whatever that means)

Then says that Kirby and Lee cracked the Galactus Equation.

From my foggy memory I thought Galactus was the comic book figure to describe current frightening politics to the south and you might confirm with more knowledge than I. My comics have been in the basement for 40 years. So I am not going down there to confirm this.

I will consider a coffee with you.

Wayne! You have to pop into the shop, we can enjoy some coffee and philosophize a bit, maybe even talk some comics! I'm embarrassed to say I don't know enough of the 60s story arcs to form and kind of insightful opinion on that interesting question. Can I egg you on to share your views and insights? To start things off?

I have been observing your deep knowledge of comics from here in nearby Grimsby for some time. Ya'll have awareness of the market which has less interest to me right now than the similarities of 1960s Marvels to todays political climate.

I returned to comic collecting in the 1970s and did some comic art exhibitions. You know more than I of the details of the period but what from your vast knowledge of the 1960-70s, if that is the period, best characterizes the current political chaos.

Who is the character who wants to dominate the world. And who fought against him ?

Folks, let me tell ya...a little sprinkling on snow would have been welcome on the past weekend. Saturday hit 37 degrees, which is all fine & good...but the entire night was 30+. I went to ride the bike at dawn's light and it was 31 degrees in the dark...I decided to wait till it got light and a nice breeze came up and had it plummet down to 28 before leaving the house at 7:30am....but don't worry cause it was back to 32 at 9am by the time I got to the bakery! You can still keep your white stuff all to yourselves though.

Just got a shipment of comics - only about 40 this time - so the next month will be cleaning and pressing and selling my under copies. Got some nice John Buscema Avengers - lovely! The other thing i can note is that I can always upgrade a Miller DD - my undercopy will sell within moments...always surprises me the enduring popularity of the run, I'd even say - due to it having a lower price point - that it sells quicker than early Claremont X-Men. 94-142 will easily average $100 per issue (obviously 95,95,100,101,121 are outliers) whilst DD will average around $20 for high grade...therefore the market is bigger (especially in uninspiring economic conditions).

I didn't get the pics !!! Just the sight of someone I know enjoying plus 30 degree weather will be good enough for me at this point... anything!!

I've always liked the laissez faire approach to economics, less government intervention, less regulation, less trade barriers, etc. I think the Yanks would be making a mistake limiting the free trade of goods, everyone will lose. I'm not sure what the difference between an optimist and a fool is, but I'm hopeful things won't get to there.

The entire treatment of Canada (and Greenland and Gaza and Panama) by Trump is disgraceful - a president threatening the sovereignty of countries. It has not just put a bad taste in my mouth regarding your neighbors but slightly soured my enjoyment of the books, every Kirby book seems tinged with frustration 'yes, Nazi's are bad and get a big smack in the mouth' and 'yes, felons belong behind bars, not the desk in the oval office' - it's like the teachings of our books have been forgotten. Ya see, you gotta get the kids reading comics for their moral development!

I noted to Mark and Mel that what I really need is a Canadian selling forum! I've worked out how to use ebay.ca and filter to Canada only....but a nice bunch of Canucks buying and selling would be ideal.

Sorry to get political, but it's definitely impacting my buying and reading at the moment.

How's everyone else feeling?

and sorry to hear about your snow, that's a real bummer...Walt I message you some photos on Saturday from a nice bike ride, but it'll be early in the day though because it is going to be 35!!! (that's 102 degrees in fascistheit).

Hi Walt: I know I'm a little late commenting on this post and I'm going to go on far too long, but I felt that a couple of things had to be corrected in my opinion. The 1980s were a magical time for new thoughts and good rip-offs of older comic book titles in my opinion. Your mentioning Eclipse Comics is totally appropriate to this but Renegade was never more than a niche publisher and mostly niche niche. I loved Wordsmith and Ms. Tree but let's just say most of their other stuff was "eclectic". Innovation only started at the end of the 80s boom/bust and in my personal opinion did a lot of licensed stuff poorly and probably some original stuff poorly. But they were never part of the big creative push that came earlier. If you want to talk about what was happening in the 1980s, the publishers and titles you need to talk about are, again, Eclipse with titles like Zot (a must read for the first 10 issues), DNAgents for a fresh take on ripping off mutant titles, Groo of course, Crossfire pretty much and the very weird Tales of the Beanworld. All excellent and mostly different. Along with other Eclipse titles that tended to be very professional. And how about Kitchen Sink. Dennis Kitchen had cut his teeth back in the days of the underground comics but by the time the 80s rolled around he was very mainstream professional with not just The Spirit reprints and also Eisner originals but also excellent books like Kings in Disguise, Omaha the Cat Dancer and Harold Hedd. Some of these reflected his underground roots but they definitely brought a more adult/less fanboy perspective to comics. And of course Comico. My own fav is the original Mage series but also Grendel and Jonny Quest. How about Pacific? They didn't last long into the 80s but if all they brought us was the Rocketeer then they deserve a mention. My gosh. First and Viz. So much creativity and chances being taken in the 1980s and you talk about Renegade and (ughh) Innovation? There was a lot of crap came out in the 1980s but it was a flourishing time for comics too. Someday it will be recognized as more important than the Bronze age although probably not until some Hollywood studio is all out of redundant ideas and stumbles upon some of these titles. I would love to see Zot movie that was true to the comic.

That's a nice looking Punisher - we can add the Punisher (and his classic emblem) to the never-ending list that the morons on your southern border have destroyed with their cult ideology....but the good news is Frank will come back, the brand will return, the memories of Police sporting Punisher emblems (?) will fade into history; he's too big and too great to stay down for long. Eventually Marvel/Disney will bring him to the big screen again. I think #129 is a wise purchase (sure, it ain't a Rocket Racer, seriously Walt what were you and Chris drinking to come up with #172 as undervalued).

Having lived through Dave Stevens getting well and truly overhyped last year as a whole generation of neckbeard YT influencers finally discovered him I've seen some INSANE sales figures for his oeuvre, so at the moment I'd stay away, let him subside from the limelight a little.

Other books I avoid in the current market: anything with Galactus (after the FF trailer last week) and the one that constantly surprises me is ASM #78 Prowler - great cover in a great run but the Prowler in the Spider-Verse movies is not Hobie (his uncle Aaron is Ultimate Comics:Spider-Man #1)...the movie heated up the book...but not the right book! My figuring is if a movie heats up a book then she has to cool (but that #78 sure is taking its sweet time)

These covers you left of the list come to mind off the top of my head because they were the ones that resonated with me the most, but taste is a personal thing: Amazing Adult Fantasy 13, Journey into Mystery 89, Tales of Suspense 39, Tales to Astonish 13, X-Men 49, Avengers 4, and Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD 7. Interestingly, most of the covers you picked were from the last half of the decade while most of the impactful covers for an old geezer like me came from the first half of the decade as I remember seeing them on the stands.

Guys, give me a break. Or rather, give Ditko a break. Here you have three covers with Spider-Man and not one of them by Ditko? Spidey #14, 15, 18, 25…or the first that came to mind for me, #33 crushed under the machine, water dripping down. No way Romita gets two covers and none of these Dikto classics are in the picks! Your #10 of Marie Severin, really? Ugh. And The Hulk #104? No, no no. Ugly cover. And we have none of the early Avengers before #10 by Kirby, and no Fantastic Four cover by Kirby at all?

I’d have Captain America #110 up there somewhere. Incredible Hulk #1, that started it all, a superb cover that really outshines Romita’s Spider-Man #50 with the same theme….Avengers #1, 3 or 4?

Fantastic Four #25, the Things vs. the Hulk? #27, vis Subby as he takes Sue away from Reed? #39, with Doctor Doom AND Daredevil, a stunning Kirby scene.

I did like the Steranko choice of the Hulk, yes…and Strange Tales #107, again, this one is well thought out and a good one, albeit offbeat.

I think one issue is, you’ve got too big a universe to pick from. All the way from the first six Hulks and FF and Spidey, up to 1970, that’s a lot of books. I admit I have some bias with my age when I started collecting all these titles (Spring 1964)…but I humbly suggest there’s a lot of better covers out there than several of your choices! If you want controversy, you have it from me!

That Prince Valiant Feature Book was one of the hallowed, legendary, highly desirable comics of the 1960s, before anyone began reprinting Val to speak of. The Fantagraphics series was still a long time away; a few things came out from Europe in the late 1950s and 60s, but in German or Italian language. I bought an Italian set of 26 or 28 magazine sized issues inthe mid 60s. Sent to Italy for them, based on a mention in one of the fanzines, perhaps ERB-dom. At that time, that was THE only way to see the strips then unless you came across the original Sunday Pages which was tough in early fandom days, before comic shows. I finally got a PV Feature Book much later on that belonged to the Fawcett editor Crowley and he wrote his name right on the cover, boldly in ink! He was probably a teen-ager when it came out. Good luck with your top ten project, sounds like fun.

I remember reading years ago that the cover art to Feature Book # 26 was the only art Hal Foster ever did for any comic book. Overstreet's notes for that book confirm it, too. Given that this was Foster's only made-for-comic-books art, I'm not surprised that McKay made as much use of it as they could. I only recently acquired a copy of the book. The seller sent it completely loose in a way-too-large manila envelope, with predictable results. That book, along with Flash Gordon Four Color #10 and the Eastern Publishing Buck Rogers books used to be big ticket comics, on a par with early Action, Detective, Captain America, and so on. The years have been much kinder to the original material in those early superhero comics than to the comics which reprinted all those classic adventure comic strips. At the same show in the early 70's I bought a nice copy of Buck Rogers #2 for $75.00, and a VG-ish Superman #17 for $30.00. The Buck Rogers was below market at the time, and the Superman was overpriced, at least in terms of "book value." Times change.

happy new year to you Walt! and best wishes to all the readers out there.

I try and ride the bike everyday in the beautiful summer weather here, early mornings...then come home and chill out by doing some cleaning and pressing...and currently reading Jonah Hex, what a fantastic character! He reminds me a bit of Walt, sure Walt doesn't have the guns, girls, gambling and charisma...but Luck and Looks they seem to be on the same level.

On the desk is Justice League #86 with a great Superman cover by Neal Adams and a socially sensitive story by Denny O'Neil...she's cleaned up very well...now it's time to give her a read!

Enjoy my fellow nutcases, enjoy!

Nice book Walt, congratulations!

Merry Christmas to all of my fellow collectors, may all your Avengers be by Buscema!

I still have a shipment due before the end of the year - it's been a good year of collecting, nothing huge, upgraded the Hulk #180...but lots of good quality silver age books came into my hands and culled down the later bronze stuff too, it's always a pleasure to really keep the collection tight. The cleaning and pressing continues to improve, learning new techniques and once again another way to find pleasure in this hobby.

I've also started to read books digitally this year, just finished the Jonah Hex run (of 92 issues) - great fun but not anything that I need to spend time gathering up...also treat it like I do Spotify - great way to test things to determine if I want a physical copy!

What about everyone else? How's your year been as a comic collector?

From Bud Planr…. Haha, just going thru my garage this weekend for low rent books in collections I had piled up that I bought and never dealt with—you know how that is. A buddy and I (John Stephenson, Worlds of Wonder Comics) pulled books for his Whatnot offeringsand $1 boxes for my shows—and a few gems, Dave Stevens covers and a nice Elfquest/Fantasy Quarterly that is worth grading. After he got home, John found a really nasty copy of Detective #225 stuffed into a box sideways, one of the boxes where he took then entire box without going thru it first. Its’ poor at best, and I sure didn’t put it there, I just preseved it for several years! Its on my want list, but I think its too beat up even for me….

Good thing you featured a fairly priced book from last night's auction, rather than one where you gouged clearly naiive bidders and distorted the GPA records. Presumably by today your shame is eating your liver.

That True Sport cover is beautiful work, but I think westerns will take off before this book. From the looks of Tom McCarthy, he is on so much stuff that he's in no condition to keep his guys from cheating and killing. I played intramural _inner tube_ water polo in college, and there was even cheating there.

Walter, if I had a $1 for everytime I am underbidder, let along getting blown out of the water on my Golden Age bidding. I sometimes wonder why I bother spending the time prowling the Heritage Sunday nite auctions, to often get nothing at all. I’m not a cheap so and so, I know I have to be aggressive, but there’s so often someone more aggressive…so, so often. I tend to agree, a LOT of great books have been coming on, such as Christine Farrell’s collection and several others, some scrarce early Gold, even Centaurs, and lots of ECs. Higher prices have bought out a lot of pre-code horror and Atlas material, although low grade Atlas remains in relatively low demand.

Yes something fishy. Book was bought from MyComicShop and they have lots of them:

https://www.mycomicshop.com/search?q=marvel+secret+wars+8&pubid=&PubRng=

My rule of thumb with them is to take 80% of the lowest price as about market. That would be 575 - 115 = 460. So I think yours did well.

Either somebody impulse buying on eBay or somebody trying to game GPA.

Offhand I agree that is the best Hulk vs. Thing. CBR agrees:
