2009 Harvey Awards Nominees Announced!

The 2009 Harvey Awards Nominees have been announced with the release of the final ballot, presented by the Executive Committees of the Harvey Awards and the Baltimore Comic-Con. Named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman, one of the industry's most innovative talents, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art. They will be presented October 10, 2009 in Baltimore, MD, in conjunction with the Baltimore Comic-Con.

Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators - those who write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. They are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals. Professionals who participate will be joining nearly 2,000 other comics professionals in honoring the outstanding comics achievements of 2008. Thank you to all that have already participated by submitting a nomination ballot.

Final ballots are due to the Harvey Awards by Friday, August 28, 2009. Full details for submission of completed ballots can be found on the final ballot. Voting is open to anyone professionally involved in a creative capacity within the comics field. Final ballots are available for download at www.harveyawards.org. Those without Internet access may request that paper ballots be sent to them via mail or fax by calling the Baltimore Comic-Con (410-526-7410) or e-mailing baltimorecomicccon@yahoo.com.

This will be the fourth year for the Harvey Awards in Baltimore, MD. Our Master of Ceremonies this year will be Scott Kurtz (www.pvponline.com). Look for more details soon on how you can attend the Harvey Awards dinner.

This year's Baltimore Comic-Con will be held October 10-11, 2009. The ceremony and banquet for the 2008 Harvey Awards will be held Saturday night, October 10.

ComicConnect.com, located in NYC, is growing at a rapid pace and needs to staff up! They are seeking an energetic, multi-tasker for the role of Consignment Director. Most importantly, they would really like to find somebody who “knows books” – i.e. someone who can tell you the significance of All Star #8, and if asked, can name an EC horror title off the top of their head. They need someone to whom the name Alex Schomburg isn’t completely unfamiliar, and has a pretty good sense of grading and the market to determine when it pays, or doesn’t pay, to have a Silver or Bronze Age Marvel or DC book slabbed by CGC.

CGC Offers Grading for Playboy and Sports Illustrated Magazines

Beginning June 18, 2009, CGC, the leading provider of expert, impartial comic book certification, will be accepting submissions of Playboy and Sports Illustrated magazines. For more than five years, CGC has provided certification services for magazine-sized comics, including Mad and Famous Monsters of Filmland. Leveraging this expertise, CGC now extends its service offerings to other collectible titles.

CGC’s certification services include a comprehensive restoration detection and evaluation for condition on the ten-point CGC grading scale, with 10 being the highest grade assigned. All CGC-certified magazines are encapsulated in an archival-safe patented holder. In conjunction with this service offering, a thicker version of the CGC holder is being introduced to accommodate Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues and Playboy Christmas issues which both have a greater page count than magazine-sized comics. CGC does not buy or sell magazines and, therefore, acts as an impartial third-party arbiter of condition and authenticity – important factors in determining the value of a collectible magazine.

This service expansion was prompted by strong collector interest for these two magazine titles in particular. Sports Illustrated, published by Time Inc., is among the most widely-read publications in the United States, with a weekly circulation of 3,000,000. It has considerable crossover collector appear, having featured on its cover four Presidents, ten celebrities and countless sports legends in nearly 3,000 issues since inception in 1954. Playboy has a circulation of 3,000,000 monthly issues in the United States. Although best known as a gentlemen’s magazine, Playboy features the work of notable authors and critics, having provided commentary on popular culture from the Post-War period to present. The list of magazine titles eligible for certification by CGC Magazines will be expanded in the future and other titles are currently under consideration.

"When CGC introduced certification in the comic book market a decade ago, it brought with it new collectors, new investors and tremendous activity that exceeded anyone’s expectations. We here at CGC are very excited about bringing our expertise and capabilities to the magazine hobby. A number of our customers have been asking for this for many years, and we’re ready to meet the needs of the magazine collecting community,” comments Mark Haspel, CGC president and primary grader.

An online information resource for CGC Magazines has launched at www.CGCmagazines.com.

As an introductory offer, collectors and dealers with a CGC submission account can send Playboy and Sports Illustrated using our comic magazine submission form and the current Magazine tier pricing. (See Services & Fees chart at CGCmagazines.com). To aid submission processing, please list Playboy or Sports Illustrated magazines on their own submission form separated from other magazine-sized comics.

For additional information contact CGC at 1-877-662-6642 or by email at info@cgccomics.com. CGC Magazines Web site can be seen at www.CGCmagazines.com.
Licensable BearTM ponies up limited Barack Obama edition for Hero Initiative

Trying to squeeze a few more drops of sweet economic nectar from the well-squeezed stimulus package known as “Obama comics,” About Comics has created a special limited edition of Licensable BearTM #4 (Barack’s first comic book appearance) for the Hero Initiative. A mere 60 copies of the Obamaesque (is that an adjective already?) Shepard Fairley-inspired cover have been printed, with 50 copies hand-numbered and signed by Licensable BearTM creator Nat Gertler. The numbered copies are currently available via Hero’s eBay store.

“I’d like to take credit as President Barack Obama’s creator in comics as well,” said Gertler. “Four score and seven weeks ago (well, actually in the year score-zero-seven), it was Licensable Bear #4 that had Obama’s first comic appearance. If only I’d trademarked him!”

Detail-oriented collectors will want to note that this limited edition is getting more limited by the minute. “My seven-month-old baby got hold of one of these copies and chewed and/or gummed it up pretty good,” noted Hero Initiative President Jim McLauchlin. “We’re now down to a limited edition of 49. And I can attest that Licensable Bear #4 makes for a tasty baby snack; less the staples, of course.”

Staples and paper were provided by USA printer Ka-blam.com, whose comics print-on-demand service makes low runs such as these 50—wait, 49!—economically practical. “More money for me to waste on Peanuts books,” noted Gertler.

Copies are available at $25 per, with copies #1, #44 (the number of Obama’s presidency) and #50 being placed for auction via eBay. “I even circled #50 on that copy,” Gertler said. “It’s all part of my commitment to quality customer service.

Captain America Reborn!

It was the shot heard ‘round the world. Following the most shocking and controversial event in comic book history – the assassination of Captain America in the pages of Captain America #25 – neither the heroes of the Marvel Universe nor the rest of the world have quite come to grips with this most traumatic of losses. From the moment he was taken from us until today, one fact has proven to be true: the world still needs Captain America. And now, the time has come! At long last, the legend, the hero, is back. Steve Rogers makes his triumphant return from the grave in the publishing event of the year: Captain America Reborn, a five part series from Marvel Comics beginning this July.

Long seen as the world’s greatest hero, Captain America made his first appearance in March, 1941, boldly fighting the Nazis in World War II. As a symbol of true patriotism, his popularity soared during the war as he became a nationally revered icon of US efforts to spread freedom around the globe. Serving as the Sentinel of Liberty for nearly 70 years, Cap embodied the spirit of the American people and became one of the world’s most beloved and recognizable characters. His death rocked the entire world, real and fictional, and his return from the grave promises to be a landmark event as well.

The recipient of two Eisner Awards for his tale about the life and death of Captain America, Ed Brubaker joins forces with acclaimed Ultimates artist Bryan Hitch for the landmark Captain America Reborn series. This partnership promises to produce the visually arresting, action packed story that fans around the world have been eagerly anticipating.

A story that captured international attention, Captain America #25 polarized shocked audiences by starkly depicting the murder the cultural icon. On that fateful day when shots rang out on the courthouse steps, Cap’s greatest enemy—the Red Skull-- achieved his greatest ambition—or so it seemed. Since that time, the Marvel Universe has been in chaos, as as the Red Skull has worked towards his true endgame. But now there is a ray of hope in the form of Steve Rogers!

How can Steve Rogers return from the dead, and will his rebirth be enough to stop the global threat of his sworn enemy? Hitting shelves on July 1st, the special five part series Captain America Reborn finally reveals the true scope of the Red Skull’s nefarious plan, and begins Captain America’s triumphant return.

For fans of Captain America and those wanting to own a part of this historic moment in Marvel history, visit your local comic book retailer on July 1, 2009 to purchase Captain America Reborn #1. To learn more about this landmark event, go to www.marvel.com/reborn! Of course, if customers would like to see specific books, Vincent will be happy to bring down a small selection by request. "We love to bring request books to shows for our clients," said Sales Executive Frank Cwiklik. "It's always a guessing game trying to figure out what comic books people might want to see at shows, and there's no way we can bring our full inventory as we have over 100,000 vintage comic books! It takes a lot of the guesswork out of conventions when you have specific requests from good
clients, and it makes us glad to know we're bringing just what folks want to see." Interested customers can email Frank at orders@metropoliscomics.com or call 800-229-6387 ext 14. "Contact us right away, as Vince can only carry so much!" Frank joked.

"Don't forget, we're always buying," Vincent concluded, "so bring your collections for a cash offer! We're always willing to look at original art, too, so the more, the better!"
Top Writers and Artists Create Hero Comics, a Hero Initiative Benefit Book

The Hero Initiative has announced the release of Hero Comics. The 32-page, no-ads comic, edited and produced by Scott Dunbier, special projects editor at IDW Publishing, will be released in late July with two covers, Eve by J. Scott Campbell, and Grendel by Matt Wagner. The fundraising book will contain great, all-new content including an original American Flagg! story by Howard Chaykin, and original stories by Gene Ha, Bill Willingham, David Lloyd, and Kaare Andrews.

In addition, Arthur Adams will recreate three classic Marvel Comics covers, and Hero Initiative beneficiaries such as Gene Colan, Bill Messner-Loebs and Josh Medors will tell their own personal stories, detailing their severe struggles, and Hero’s involvement.

An excerpt from Josh Medors’ story reads:“When I am feeling almost ready to give in to my cancer, ready to throw my hands in the air and say ‘I quit!,’ I get a call from the Initiative. ‘Just wanted to see how you are doing.’ It may not seem like much, but let me assure you—When the monster bites and the pain pills aren’t working, a call like that is more effective than a Super-Soaker filled with holy water against the ol’ Count.”

This special edition comic retails for $3.99, and will be on sale at comic stores worldwide on July 29, 2009. It’s available in the Diamond Previews catalog for August-shipping items in the IDW section, order code JUN090950.

“I've been an active supporter of the Hero Initiative since I was first asked to help out,” stated Howard Chaykin. “It's particularly important in this volatile era that we remember the men and women who made our industry, and make certain that they have the happy endings they richly deserve.”

Fans will be able to get their hands on this epic treasure early at the San Diego Comic-Con, July 23-26, 2009 as well. Copies will be on-sale at the Hero Initiative booth, #907.

“It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to work on a book like Hero Comics. The job that the Hero Initiative does, helping comics creators in need, is a noble endeavor, one all of us should get behind,” said Dunbier.

All proceeds from the book benefit Hero Initiative, as all creators involved have donated their services. IDW is donating its publishing services, Comicraft is donating lettering and book design, and Try Vision Company, Inc. of Los Angeles is donating printing.
