Cowabunga! Nickelodeon Acquires Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for $60 Million!

Following other recent major entertainment deals Nickelodeon has acquired the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for $60 million.

The heroes in a half shell were created in 1984 by independent comic artists Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. The characters became a mega-success and rose from an independent black and white comic book to a major brand including toys, movies, cartoons, and numerous licensed product.

According to Reuters the $60 million deal includes $9.75 million for 4Kids Entertainment, Inc. which served as the licensing agent for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and handled the television rights to TMNT. The remaining $50 million goes to the Mirage Group, which includes several other companies and Turtles co-creator Peter Laird.

Paramount Pictures, a Viacom-owned division, is planning to distribute the next TMNT film in 2012. Meanwhile, Nickelodeon is busy developing a computer animated television series, also tentatively slated to debut in 2012.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a property that maintains a very passionate global fan base, is rich with opportunity for a tent pole movie, and is exactly the right property for us to work together with Nickelodeon," Adam Goodman, President, Paramount Pictures, stated.

On his blog, Peter Laird explained his reasons for the sale noting primarily burnout of running a global business and his interest in returning to drawing. He also noted that the sale did not include Mirage Studios which is still owned by Laird.

“Faster Than a Speeding Bullet: The Art of the Superhero” Exhibition

Works on loan from Stephen Fishler and Vincent Zurzolo are included in the special exhibition “Faster Than a Speeding Bullet: The Art of the Superhero” at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon.

“Faster Than a Speeding Bullet: The Art of the Superhero” is on view in the museum’s Coeta and Donald Barker Gallery through January 3, 2010. Featuring rare and valuable works by some of the most admired artists in the history of superhero comics, gathered from private collections from across the country, the exhibition provides visitors the opportunity to view rarely seen original art.

The covers for “The Amazing Spider-Man #301,” “Luke Cage, Power Man #47,” “World’s Finest #247,” and “Black Panther #1” are included in the loans from Vincent Zurzolo of Metropoliscomics.com. The dynamic cover of “Luke Cage, Power Man #47,” features the first African-American superhero to have his own comic title and was drawn by the legendary artist Gil Kane. The cover of “World’s Finest #247,” was published in 1977 and features a famous and disturbing image of Superman giving a Nazi salute.

Zurzolo, a New York City native, began selling comics on the streets of Manhattan’s Financial District after earning his degree in marketing from St. John’s University. He is currently the COO of Metropolis Collectibles, the world’s largest dealership of vintage comic books, with its gallery location on Broadway in the Union Square area of Manhattan. He is also the COO of ComicConnect.com, an online auction site for vintage comic books, co-founder of the Big Apple Comic Convention in New York City, and the host of the online radio show Comic Zone Radio, where he has interviewed many legends of the comic book world.
Loans from the collection of Stephen Fishler include the covers of the comic books “Ghost Rider #8,” “Flash #123,” “Fantastic Four #74,” “The Amazing Spider-Man #65,” “Jimmy Olsen #102” and the Alex Ross Kingdom Come cover for “Overtstreet Fan” magazine #14.

Fishler founded Metropolis Collectibles in 1984 and grew the company into the world’s largest vintage collectible business. He is considered one of the nation’s leading experts on collectibles, and has appeared on numerous television shows including “Good Morning America,” “Entertainment Tonight” and “The Today Show.” He graduated from Baruch College with a degree in Marketing in 1990.

Guest-curated by Ben Saunders, a professor of English at the University of Oregon, “Faster Than A Speeding Bullet” explores the imaginative world of some of the most compelling fantasy figures to emerge from twentieth-century popular culture — the superheroes of American comic books. Consisting primarily of “original art” — the large-sized pen-and-ink pages from which comic books are printed — it also includes painted cover images alongside a handful of private commissions.

The exhibition features over 150 pages of superhero comic art from the 1940s to the present, including several complete stories and key works by many major creators in the industry, including Neal Adams, C. C. Beck, John Buscema, Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Will Eisner, Bill Everett, Lou Fine, Ramona Fradon, Dave Gibbons, Don Heck, Carmine Infantino, J. G.
Warner Bros. Announces Creation of DC Entertainment

In what can only be seen as a direct response to the purchase of Marvel Entertainment by media powerhouse, the Walt Disney, Co., Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. announced today that they will be changing the corporate name of DC Comics to DC Entertainment. Headed by Diane Nelson, former President of Warner Premiere, this bold move has been speculated about since the Marvel/Disney merger was announced last week.

"The founding of DC Entertainment fully recognizes our desire to provide
both the DC properties and fans the type of content that is only possible
through a concerted cross-company, multi-platform effort," said Nelson in a recent press release.
"DC Entertainment will help us to formally take the great working
relationships between DC Comics and various Warner Bros. businesses to the next
level in order to maximize every opportunity to bring DC's unrivaled
collection of titles and characters to life."

Having overseen the Harry Potter franchise at Warner Bros. (WB) since 2000—the most profitable franchise in the studio's history—Nelson will be reporting directly to WB Picture Group President, Jeff Robinov, hoping to duplicate some the magic of Harry Potter with the DC library of characters. As most comic fans know, aside from the rebooted Batman franchise, WB has fallen a distant second to Marvel Studios with lackluster film such as Watchmen, Superman Returns and Catwoman.

"DC Comics and its superhero characters are truly touchstones of popular
culture, and the formation of DC Entertainment is a major step in our
company's efforts to realize the full potential of this incredible
wellspring of creative properties," said Barry Meyer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of WB, in a recent press release. "Diane knows our
studio as a creative executive, a marketer and a senior manager, and this
varied background will help her effectively and creatively integrate the DC
brand and properties across all our businesses. We're also thrilled that
Paul [Levitz] will remain involved with DC and we'll be able to tap his expertise
to help us reach our goals for this new business."

The "involvement" of Paul Levitz in which Meyer speaks of is in reference to Levitz steping down as Publisher of DC Comics to take on a consulting position with DC Entertainment. In addition, Levitz will continue to write and serve as a contributing editor for the publishing arm of DC Entertainment.

"After so many roles at DC, it's exciting to look forward to
focusing on my writing and being able to remain a part of the company I love as
it grows into its next stage," said Levitz in a recent press release. "It's a new
golden age for comics and DC's great characters, and I hope my new
position will allow me to contribute to that magic time."

While some are surely skeptical of this announcement from WB, only time will tell whether this will bring DC up to par with Marvel or be "a day late and a dollar short."

Disney to buy Marvel for $4 billion

Walt Disney Co. will purchase the comic book company behind X-Men and Spider-Man.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Walt Disney Co. announced Monday that it has agreed to purchase comic book and action hero company Marvel Entertainment for about $4 billion.

If Marvel shareholders approve the deal, they would receive $30 per share in cash and 0.745 shares of Disney for each share of Marvel that they hold. The deal is valued at $50 per Marvel share, more than a 29% premium, based on Friday's closing price.

"We believe that adding Marvel to Disney's unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation," said Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger, in a statement.

Top Writers and Artists Create Hero Comics, a Hero Initiative Benefit Book

Hero Initiative is very proud to announce the release of Hero Comics. The 32-page, no-ads comic, edited and produced by Scott Dunbier, special projects editor at IDW Publishing, hits stores today with two covers, Eve by J. Scott Campbell, and Grendel by Matt Wagner. The fundraising book will contain great, all-new content including an original American Flagg! story by Howard Chaykin, and original stories by Gene Ha, Bill Willingham, David Lloyd, and Kaare Andrews.

In addition, Arthur Adams will recreate three classic Marvel Comics covers, and Hero Initiative beneficiaries such as Gene Colan, Bill Messner-Loebs and Josh Medors will tell their own personal stories, detailing their severe struggles, and Hero’s involvement.

Patrons of Los Angeles’ Golden Apple Comics will also have access to another bonus: Bill Willingham has donated both pages of original art from his 2-page story, and Golden Apple is raffling them off, with raffle tickets costing a mere $1 each. Golden Apple is located at 7018 Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles. Call them at 323-658-6047, or visit www.GoldenAppleComics.com

This special edition comic retails for $3.99, and is in the Diamond Previews catalog for August-shipping items in the IDW section, order code JUN090950 . Hero is proud and grateful to announce that through a special arrangement with the printer, Try Vision Company, Inc. of Los Angeles, thousands of copies are available for reorder in Diamond’s system.

“I've been an active supporter of the Hero Initiative since I was first asked to help out,” stated Howard Chaykin. “It's particularly important in this volatile era that we remember the men and women who made our industry, and make certain that they have the happy endings they richly deserve.”

“It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to work on a book like Hero Comics. The job that the Hero Initiative does, helping comics creators in need, is a noble endeavor, one all of us should get behind,” said Dunbier.

All proceeds from the book benefit Hero Initiative, as all creators involved have donated their services. IDW is donating its publishing services, Comicraft is donating lettering and book design, and Try Vision Company, Inc. of Los Angeles is donating printing.
