TWOMORROWS DEBUTS NEW ITEMS, LEGO® ERIC CARTMAN, AND A 50% OFF SALE AT COMIC-CON BOOTH #1301

TwoMorrows Publishing, now in its 15th year of celebrating the art and history of comics and LEGO, is heading to Comic-Con International booth #1301 with several new items hot off the presses, some astonishing LEGO creations, and a colossal half-price sale on books and magazines.
Publications debuting at Comic-Con will be:

• Alter Ego #88 (edited by Roy Thomas), with an in-depth look at DC Comics founder Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson.
• Back Issue #35 (edited by Michael Eury), spotlighting villains from comics of the 1970s to 1980s.
• Jack Kirby Collector #53 (edited by publisher John Morrow), focusing on “The Magic of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby”.
• All-Star Companion, Volume 4 (edited by Roy Thomas), the final volume of the series featuring coverage of the 1940s Justice Society and the 1980s Infinity, Inc.
• BrickJournal Compendium 3 (edited by Joe Meno), compiling issues of the company’s LEGO magazine that have never been in print form before.
• Captain Action: The Original Superhero Action Figure (written by Michael Eury), the new full-color hardcover second edition of the indispensable tome on the history of the character.
• Modern Masters Volume 21: Chris Sprouse (by Todd Dezago and Eric Nolen-Weathington), presenting a career-spanning interview with the DC/WildStorm artist, as well as a deluxe sketchbook and color gallery of his work.

A very limited number of copies of each debut item will be available, so customers are encouraged to stop by early at booth #1301 (immediately inside the main entrance to Hall A at the San Diego Convention Center) for best selection.

In conjunction with its BrickJournal/LEGO Panel on Friday, July 24 at 10:30am, TwoMorrows will be featuring an amazing array of LEGO creations at its booth, including a not-to-be-missed statue of South Park’s Eric Cartman constructed completely of LEGO bricks, among other custom creations. The first two BrickJournal Compendium books will be offered at 50% off cover price to celebrate the release of the third volume of the series, and back issues of BrickJournal will also be available for purchase.

In addition, TwoMorrows will be offering 50% off a selection of 26 different books and DVDs, plus 50% off back issues of their magazines Alter Ego, Back Issue, Draw, Write Now, Rough Stuff, Comic Book Artist, and the Jack Kirby Collector. While every in-stock issue will be available, due to space limitations, the company is bringing only a few copies of each older issue for this sale.

The company will also hold its annual TwoMorrows Panel on Thursday, July 23 at 4:30pm, offering fans a chance to see a video presentation of upcoming projects, and ask questions and share feedback with the company’s publisher and editors.

Bursting with “spectacular action” (Hollywood Reporter) and “pure filmmaking exhilaration” (Rolling Stone) director J.J. Abrams’ sensational reinvention of the “Star Trek” franchise was hailed by critics and embraced by long-time and new fans alike, earning over $375 million at the worldwide box office. Starring a hot young cast including Chris Pine (Carriers), Zachary Quinto (”Heroes”), Zoe Saldana (Avatar), Karl Urban (The Bourne Supremacy), John Cho (Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle), Anton Yelchin (Terminator Salvation) and Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead), the global smash hit also features seasoned actors such as Eric Bana (Munich), Bruce Greenwood (National Treasure: Book of Secrets), Winona Ryder (Girl, Interrupted) and the original Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy.

“I cannot wait for fans of Star Trek to check out the home entertainment release of the film. The behind-the-scenes features on the DVD — and especially the Blu-ray — give a wonderful look at the crazy hard work and incredible fun that went into making this movie,” said J.J. Abrams. “The cast and crew were truly extraordinary to work with — watching these special features, you’ll see why. And for people who didn’t catch Star Trek in the theater, I hope they do now, as Paramount has done an exceptional job with this release; the picture and sound quality are both excellent.”

The STAR TREK DVD and Blu-ray will boast out-of-this-world special features to take viewers even further into the new universe of the rousing space adventure. The two-disc DVD and three-disc Blu-ray include in-depth explorations of the reimagining of the franchise, the phenomenal cast, the spectacularly real action sequences, the powerful score and the captivating aliens, commentary by J.J. Abrams, the writers and producers, a gag reel and a digital copy of the film. Additionally, the discs feature compelling deleted scenes that reveal a side story involving Nero with a first-ever look at Abrams’ version of the infamous warrior Klingons.

The STAR TREK Blu-ray boldly ventures beyond the final frontier with over three hours of sensational bonus footage including branching pods that allow for enhanced exploration, more fascinating features on the starships, planets, props, costumes and sound of STAR TREK, as well as a Starfleet Vessel Simulator and access to the latest NASA news about real-life space exploration via BD-Live.

The two-disc DVD and three-disc Blu-ray will also offer a home entertainment first: groundbreaking augmented reality technology.
An epic tale involving dozens of characters and spanning decades, Oasis is the story of not just a revolution, but an ultimate revolution- and on an alien world at that.

In a totalitarian society ruled hand and fist by a god gone mad, the citizenry are deluded into believing their own less than meager crumbs are something akin to manna, while any brave enough to stand up and speak out are faced with brutal public execution or worse- expatriation. Patrick Nichleson was trying to get by, attempting a career as a writer and looking to have his own modest needs filled, until he made the criminal mistake of having friends somewhat involved in the growing network of rebellion, leading to Patrick losing everything he owned and being cast outside of the giant walled-city, naked and beaten and on the run from both hunter-seekers and demon dogs. As the saga then unfolds, Patrick transitions from joining the revolution to becoming the revolution himself. Along the way, friendships are forged, enemies are made, and lives are lost, as everything changes forever.

Myers has built not merely a city or a world to house his magnum opus drama, he has created a universe. The narrative slides at times easily into one of a metaphysical voice, with grandiose impressions given to give the scale of things at play a feeling of the full intentions of otherworldly gods at work, or whim. The story of Patrick and Oasis is about evolution itself, from the personal to the societal, from the physical to the spiritual. This is a setting of unadulterated science fantasy, where dragons fly high above robots the size of tenement buildings, while laser technology and psychic phenomena color the personalities implored. Not only does the weight of political anarchy fail to entirely stomp out the dreams of its victims here, but the dreams themselves can sometimes open unto literal omnidimensional realms.

In terms of stylistic vision, such massive examples of the winds of change should be a given, as the world of Oasis is home to all manner of strange creatures. Some are born with wings, some with abilities to speak internally with others over great distances, and yet some are born with desirous ambitions of such lethal magnitude that destruction of everything seems the only viable course of action. Myers has noticeable fun in drawing these inhabitants, his style being generally loose and caricaturesque. The physicalities of many of his characters have to be seen to be believed. Design-wise, many persons can illustrate cyborgs, but what about beings consisting of nothing but multiple right hands? Or persons with giant fish in place of natural limbs? Or enormous squids that graze in fields while hovering about, completely ignorant to the fact that squids do no such things in our world? Though often animated in spirit, the art never comes across as childlike or rudimentary. If anything, the more bizarre and surreal and monstrous the faces and settings, the more Myers’ creative flair explodes with glee.

Very very very imaginative.

As a whole, one can see a glimpse of the many things that may have inspired this book, from a fondness for Anne McCaffrey-authored dragon stories to a love for the cartoony expressionism of Chuck Jones and Tex Avery to a solid understanding of political science and a yearning for fulfillment from religious dogma. Even some Lovecraft. Oasis: Omnibus is eco-centric science fiction. Oasis: Omnibus is an Aesopian fable. Oasis: Omnibus is a multi-year long effort from a spectacularly inspired writer/artist.

A good story, no matter the medium, should provide an escape of sorts, preferably while provoking us with questions and giving some cause to think outside of our timid little boxes. Take us away someplace new, and teach us something along the voyage. Oasis: Omnibus, by Nicholas Myers, well succeeds in both aims.
