Dew have deemed the earth worthy and given back to us the sweet nectar of Diet Mountain Dew Supernova. Praise your infinite wisdom and kindness. Your generosity will be sung in the songs of legends!

Alas, I am not certain that I am as noble or sharing an individual as Mountain Dew. As I saw the nectar, I then bought every last bottle for myself.

But, I did not stop there.

I then quickly grabbed a cart and emptied all of the 12 packs off of the shelves. I hoarded them all for myself! (Less the gods of Mountain Dew deem to take the nectar away again.)

Or is it a quest?! Am I meant to drive to every store in my surrounding area and buy what little is shared. The last time that Supernova was given to us, it was taken away. When I last saw it slowly dwindling away, I quickly bought every last drop for myself. Should I not do it again?

Mayhap, I should watch the new series "Doomsday Preppers" and learn something from them. For if the world were to come to an end, this sweet ever so pleasant nectar, Diet Mountain Dew Supernova, would be worth millions!

I love receiving this catalogue in the mail! Ever time I get it, I want to post several blogs, buy several items, and flip through it time and time again.

Even my partner (a non-geek) loves to go through it. (He is looking for an "I Love Lucy" bobblehead set. Please, please don't let them make one.)

I literally found enough items to fill the entire month; however, that would be cheating. Sooooo, instead of trying to point all of the items out to you, I'm going to recommend that you register to receive their free catalogue. If nothing else, you can drool over every item; however, if you are like me, it is the home to new toys and gifts.

Funny note: For all of you who have figured out and/or know what I do for a living, this fits into it perfectly. So leave me alone!

Now, order your own copy!

Why am I so excited about going back then?

It definitely wasn't the gun convention going on at the same time.

It was the fact that I did have some fun. It was a good convention, and above all things, I wanted my brother and sister-in-law to have a good time. I was nervous, which turned out to be a bit unfounded.

It was a good convention, and my brother has been asking me for the last two years if I would like to go again. (He still has issues with the whole "I'm a Geek, and I'm Proud!")

In all honesty, they will probably rub my face in the fact that I was oh-so-wrong. All I am hoping for is a tad bit more "Steampunk." I really want him and my best friend, Pat (who I am trying to drag along) to see what Steampunk is all about.

The Fades, on BBC, actually got off to a good start. Slightly different take on the horror aspect and actually went with ghosts who eat people and become zombish. Giving it a chance

Lost Girl, on Syfy - I've only seen the first episode. The ads for the other shows have turned me off. I will probably force myself through another episode or two. DVR a few more trys.

Being Human - Syfy American Version - is actually picking up some speed. The more they move away from the BBC version, the more I am enjoying it.

Game of Thrones - HBO - Isn't on right now. I just wanted to mention that I miss it.

Grimm - My brother is watching it. I've given it a few tries. May try to DVR it again. Same holds true for Once Upon a Time.

Face Off - on Syfy - isn't anything spectacular, but I'm watching it. Amazing work.

Top Chef: Texas, on Bravo, is another round of fairly decent chefs; however, being originally from Texas, I am enjoying this one. Usually have to catch this on one a rerun, I am usually watching Middle as a buildup to Modern Family.

I know that there are a few others, but it is a tad early for me to try to think of all of them. Recommendations are highlighted.

Much sadness. :(

However, I did pick up a couple of other things - one of them being a Steampunk walking stick. Here is a pick of it. I've seen some other real cool ones, but this one fits my characters.

I've been away for a while, but last year was a really tough year. Consulting, family loss, and then some personal bumps here and there. If you were to say all of this to me, I would simply define them as "excuses." But writing for a blog on a regular basis can get a tad tough. I was originally trying to do a blog a day. I think that I am going to focus on a minimum of a blog a week.

With my new job and a far more work/live balance, you can expect to see me contributing again.

I do need to update the sidebar too.
I hate the way he has been vilified and reviled over the years. Jan has forgiven him why can’t Bendis? I was even willing to accept that he had developed a multiple personality and the Yellowjacket persona was responsible for him striking The Wasp. My favorite of his guises was Dr. Pym, Adventurer. I really liked Rover his AI flying vehicle. He kept a gillion inventions and gizmos in his pockets and somehow, amazingly, he never lost any of them.

Points in Favor

The colors are really good. Bowen has been doing a much better job of attaining the texture feel without making the colors splotchy for a while now.

Classic pose.

I like the goggles.

Points Against

The base is bland.

I’d have like a smaller Yellowjacket on there too that was flying or a companion mini Wasp flying around him.

Recommendation: HOT BUY! Yellowjacket is one of the most controversial characters from Marvel Comics ever. It’s especially interesting that the whole thing about him abusing his wife, The Wasp, seems to have been the result of a misunderstanding between the writer (Jim Shooter) and the artist (Bob Hall). This is one of the few male yellow costumes that makes sense and looks good. Wolverine, not so much.

I’m not going to let that stop me though.

There have been many conversations about DC doing something like this ever since Marvel launched their Ultimate line over 10 years ago (around 11 I think). Then we got the All-Star Batman, All-Star Superman, and were promised All-Star Wonder Woman and the comic shop talk was talking about the All-Star line being DC’s Ultimate line. They proved that wrong even though All-Star Superman was the best Superman book in over 10 years (yeah, that’s a non-sequitur). I’ve also seen several comparisons to the Marvel Heroes Reborn “relaunch” in the mid 90s. Maybe those are fair. Maybe they’re not. I guess we’ll see in September.

Over 25 years ago, we had Crisis on Infinite Earths and the books that followed that were a mix of continuing with a slightly altered status quo to books like Superman and Wonder Woman where we essentially got complete reboots.

I’m less than excited about many of the costume redesigns. Jim Lee is redesigning most of the costumes. I really liked Gambit’s costume and maybe the costume he designed for Rogue in X-Men #1. I guess the Hush costume was moderately interesting. I almost find the new Wonder Woman costume he designed almost interesting. I’d almost rather see her in the pirate outfit she wore in the 90s when she was enslaved in space. But that’s just me. Grifter was cool. On the other hand, he was the guy who put Wolverine back in yellow and thought it was cool. Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld defined super hero costume design in the 90s, but that was 20 years ago.

My commentary on a few of the titles:

Justice League written by Geoff Johns with art by Jim Lee and Scott Williams.

I’m not Geoff Johns’ biggest fan. I admit it. He writes good comics. One of the best Green Lantern comics I’ve read in years is Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern: Secret Origin (affiliate link) but I loathe most of (but not all) of his whole GL: Rainbow Corps storyline. The last book drawn by Jim Lee that got me excited was, honestly, the original WildCATS series, and well, it was a big let down. I did enjoy Batman: Hush, but only picked it up after the fact and the art was gorgeous.

Justice League # 1 gets a pass from me. I’m not even going to bother.

Aquaman written by Geoff Johns with art by Ivan Reis

This one is a mixed bag for me. I like Aquaman. I’m probably one of the few of my generation who would have Aquaman listed as one of his top 5 super-heroes from the Super Friends (Superman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Hawkman, and Green Arrow is my complete list). I really liked his series when Peter David was writing it. I don’t trust Geoff Johns. I love Ivan Reis’ artwork. Also I don’t trust DC with Aquaman right now.

Aquaman # 1, I’m giving a try. If they can’t hook me in one issue, I probably won’t be around for the second.

The Fury of Firestorm written by Ethan Van Sciver and Gail Simone with art by Yildiray Cinar.

This is one of the few nuDCU titles that has me a little excited. Ethan Van Sciver has been dabbling in writing for a while. I’ve spoken with him in the past about some of his ideas he’s had for different characters. He is very excited about his books and has lots of interesting ideas. Gail Simone is one of the great comics writers of the 2000s. I love Ron Raymond. I didn’t give Jason Rusch much of a chance when his book came out. If they throw in Dr. Stein, it could be really interesting. I also like the concept of two Firestorms who merge into Ultra Zord Firestorm.

I’m giving The Fury of Firestorm # 1 a buy. I’m going to give it three issues to hook me.

Green Arrow written by JT Krul with art by Dan Jurgens.

Green Arrow is one of the more interesting characters in the DC flock to me. He’s one of the few that Judd Winick has written and been unable to spoil. It is also one of the comics that Brad Meltzer has written that I actually liked. And there was Mike Grell. I loved the Mike Grell Green Arrow run. JT Krul’s run hasn’t done anything for me, but I’m not sure if that’s really his fault or if DC had mandated a new direction for him and it didn’t work for me. The covers by Brett Booth interests me. Unfortunately his Jim Lee costume is a big turn off. I like Dan Jurgens art. We’ll have to see where they take us. Plus there’s just something cool about a guy who grew up and became Robin Hood.

Green Arrow # 1 gets a try from me. He gets one issue to win me over.

Mister Terrific written by Eric Wallace and with art by Roger Robinson.

Mister Terrific was one of those characters created for Geoff Johns’ Justice Society relaunch forever ago. He has intrigued me ever since. He was a great character in Greg Rucka’s Checkmate (affiliate link). I loved him in Checkmate. I don’t know anything about anyone on the creative team. The thing I never understood is how do they decide he’s the third smartest guy on the planet. Who are first and second? I don’t get it. I would like my own T-Spheres though.

Mister Terrific # 1 gets a try from me. I’ll check out issue 1 and see if it’s worth me buying # 2.

Hawk and Dove by Sterling Gates with art by Rob Liefeld.

First I’m willing to bet Rob won’t have his required three issues done by August. Second Sterling Gates hasn’t written a comic that I’ve read that has interested me enough to pursue reading.

True confession time: I was a big Rob Liefeld fan back in his New Mutants / X-Force days. What he lacked in skill and craftsmanship, he more than made up for with energy. He was so enthusiastic about what he was doing back in those days. You could look at his comics in those days and see how much he enjoyed what he was doing. In my opinion the biggest mistake he made was not continuing with an inker strong enough help with his craft. I can forgive some of his anatomy sins. I could almost be a Rob Liefeld apologist if he could just get an inker that could help him out.

Finally, wasn’t this done over 20 years ago? Hmmm…..

Hawk and Dove # 1 gets a pass. I’m not buying it.

Deathstroke written by Kyle Higgins with art by Joe Bennett and Art Thibert.

This version of his costume looks like it came from the 90s post Image DC. I really hate this look. I don’t know who Kyle Higgins is, but I do like Joe Bennett and Art Thibert.

Deathstroke # 1 gets a pass. Even with potentially beautiful art, the costume suggests that the art may not be able to save the book.

That’s it for now. I’ll be remarking on the Superman and Batman books later this week. There may even be a few that interest me in there.

Confession time: Being the lazy bum that I am, I grabbed the artwork from CBR. I didn't like G. Willow Wilson's Vertigo series Air (affiliate link). The problem wasn't that the writing was bad nor was it that I didn't like the story. And art was beautiful. What didn't work with Air for me was that it (or at least the first collection) was too much like The Invisibles (affiliate link). I love The Invisibles (there's a post there one day), as strange as that book was. It wasn't just the similarities and differences between Air and The Invisibles that turned me off. It really boiled down to the fact that I had literally finished reading The Invisibles the week before I read Air. If I hadn't just read The Invisibles, I probably would have liked Air.

The whole point of this ramble is to say that I like G. Willow Wilson's writing and think she is probably the perfect choice to reimagine Crossgen's Mystic for Marvel. And this "Mean Girls goes to Hogwarts" concept makes a lot of sense.

The art by David Lopez is beautiful. I didn't remember his name before, but he was the artist on Hawkeye & Mockingbird (affiliate link), which was a beautiful book. He's one to watch. I need to go find more work he's done.

For now it's a four issue mini series and hopefully we'll want and get more once it's done.

I need to go back and reread Air now that it's been a while and see how I like it.

via Newsarama

My daughter asked me this question last night. I answered her quickly, Grover. This morning when she asked me again and I had a different answer, Oscar. How could I like two such seemingly opposite characters? In reality I posted the comment on Facebook that I can’t decide between Grover and Oscar for my favorite and one of my friends (my cousin actually) made the comment that they were complete opposites and that made me think. Why do I like these characters who have so many traits that are opposite?

First we have Grover. Grover is a happy go lucky kinda monster, who is still afraid of monsters and the dark. He’s cute and bathes. He’s innocent and more than a little naïve. You might even call him slow. He’s very happy; you might say cheery (almost annoyingly so).

Then there’s Oscar who pretty much says the first thing that comes to mind, which is usually “Scram!”. He rarely bathes and when he does he probably uses scummy water. He lives in a garbage can with an elephant and a worm. He might possibly be a Time Lord (how else would he get all of that stuff into one trash can, it it weren’t a TARDIS. And he’s smart. OK at this point I figure out why I like Oscar so much; he’s a really grouchy smart guy.

Would they have to have one or more traits in common for me to like them both? Not really, but in my gut I had this feeling that they weren’t so different. That there was a common factor between them that made it difficult for me to choose my top favorite from the two.

What is that commonality?

Yes, they’re both great characters.
I'm still not sure what the common factor is, nor am I sure that there really is one. But for some reason I seemed to think there was this morning.

How about sharing your thoughts?

Plus he's turning out 6 inked pages a week, most weeks and doing other work to boot. Other than the occasional skip week, the man is creating 24 quality pages a month consistently. Not many people can do that.

And Warren Ellis; there's not a sicker dude in comics. He's twisted and demented in all the right ways and many of the wrong ones. I'm not sure if it's the Red Bull or the drugs he's used...OK it must be the drugs...or just a case of mental illness, but Warren Ellis is messed up.

But this is about FreakAngels. It's an almost weekly web comic that gets released every Friday (or we get an apologetic note from one of the creators or Avatar Press staff which are almost as entertaining as the comic some times).

FreakAngels is basically about "What if the Midwich Cuckoos survived to grow up?" and the global catastrophe that they would cause and life thereafter.

Things are getting even more interesting. How many comics can you get a line like this:

One of their own has returned...from the dead...and the FreakAngels are learning more about "the package" and ramping up their powers even more. We're at a point in the story where we really don't know what's going to happen next and I can't be more excited.

Sidebar: I'm a huge fan of post apocalyptic fiction. I'm pretty sure I don't want the reality, but the fiction always amazes me. Even the bad stuff (Knight Rider 2010). It's interesting to see what tech the writers think will survive whatever calamity caused the situation (not the guy from Jersey Shore. We know what calamity caused him. Radioactive chemical waste.) and how societies form or reform I should say. So often authors resort to a utopian view or dictatorship view. Personally, I think we'd end up with a police state based partly on what happened in Russia after the fall of the iron curtain.

Alice, an unpowered human who has fallen into the inner circle of the FreakAngels and our perspective character, and Arkady are my favorites right now. I like how even though Alice doesn't really know what is going on, she knows more then the other civilians who have been around the FreakAngels ever since the disaster happened and she hasn't completely crapped her pants (I know I would have by now). She keeps coming back for more. She may actually be the strongest character of the bunch.

Arkady on the other hand just doesn't really care. She's a fun loving carefree type and probably one of the most powerful members. No matter what happens she seems to take it all in stride.

If you haven't been reading, they have all of the episodes up on the website or you can buy them in trade from your local comic shop or Amazon.com today. Freakangels Volume 5 is due out soon.

First, though, I will need to figure out how to use this new app. Second, in my list of nothing, I will need to figure out how to simplify the posting of my posts.

On a final note, I have not forgotten my geeky side. I can't really explain or tell you which one is better.

That doesn't keep me from seeing some really cool collectible items, and this is one of them. I guess I really do enjoy the 'cartoon' styled characters - no matter the genre.

Robert's Two Cents
I'm definitely the Star Wars fan in my family. My only qualm is I probably am not willing to spend $100 for a piece of this size or even $80, so I'll probably pass.

He also has one of the most tragic deaths of any comic character. Not to mention he probably has the best head of hair of any character in comics.

The faux bronze pieces have all been very nice. Zimm has several of them on display in his office and they make for an impressive sight. This one would fit in nicely with the rest of his collection or any other Bowen collection.

Points in Favor

The colors are just right for Captain Marvel and for a faux bronze.

The hair. Cap had the best 70s hairdo of any super hero.

The pose is iconic while not being overstated (like many Superman pieces)

Points Against

The base is blah! While I don't get as hung up on the bases as Zimm, I do expect more of this one. It looks like someone took a blank base and added pyrite on top of it.

Recommendation: HOT BUY! I like Captain Marvel. He's a great looking character and the fuax bronzes for the most part have been really nice. Personally I prefer the museum pieces in the faux bronze treatment over some of the more "actively" posed pieces. So this one is perfect in my opinion.

Robert probably knows better then I do.

Points in Favor

Colors. Great colors.

Cape is awesome. I like how it flows.

Points Against

It's Shazam. I'm not a big fan. You have to understand.

Seems incredibly simple - even for a Maquette.

Hair looks to be painted on.

Recommendation: Pass. Not because I am not a fan. I have bought a plenty of statues and busts of characters that I don't like, but I have to like the work.

Robert's Two Cents
I really like the balance between simplicity and detail of most of the DC maquettes. This one missed that mark.

Points in Favor

The colors are nicely done.

Points Against

The cape should have the detail at the edges and is not posed for a semi iconic piece. His cape should be too short to wrap around him like that.

The hairline looks more like Black Adam than Captain Marvel.

The seam on his chest is too thick. Am I picking nits? Probably.

I'm not even sure they got his boots right.

He should have more of a Fred MacMurray look to his face.

Recommendation: Pass. I like Captain Marvel. I'm not his number one fan, but I enjoy the character. His cartoon was on the air when I was a kid. He's an interesting character. One of the things that make the Big Red Cheese interesting is he's a kid, but he has all of this responsibility and power on his shoulders. Can you imagine? I can't.

This piece doesn't look like Captain Marvel to me. It's more of a Superman pose with the Captain Marvel costume. This character has a very iconic look and this piece doesn't fit that look to my eye.
