Road Apples Almanac is a comic strip about an otter named Aldous, his dog Shep and their journey together. It appears every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Looking for a peaceful life, where he and his dog Shep can pass away their days away from a hectic world and troublesome past, Aldous has purchased 800 acres of bush and old pasture. Using only a few of the acres to support a small flock of sheep, some chickens, and a modest garden, and saving the rest as buffer from the world and room to indulge a variety of interests, Aldous hopes to let go of his hectic past.

Also, a farm happens to be the perfect place to hide Doc, the rooster, who for reasons unknown, won’t leave Shep and the farmer alone.

Shep adores his master, but likes to tease and egg him on. He is insatiably hungry, due to a mishap years ago.

Most people don’t know this about me, but I am not supposed to be an animator. If you were to hop into a time machine and travel back in time to ask my grade school self what my career is going to be one day I will tell you that I am going to be a jet pilot. That, or a cartoonist.

So Why Robots? Why a Beach? Believe it or not, this comic started its life as a simple sketch I created two years ago while I was bored and on a lunch break. I sketched out a little robot and for some reason thought that he might look cute with a surfboard and flower print swim trunks. Something about that little sketch felt fresh and interesting. I knew I was on to something special.

Join us this week on Comics Coast To Coast as we talk to Adrian Ropp of the webcomic Chim Chum and the Portly Samurai.

Chim Chum and the Portly Samurai is a daily (Monday through Friday) all-ages comic strip written and drawn by Adrian Ropp. It follows the adventures of an as-yet-to-be-named samurai of questionable origins and his silent sidekick, a small fox named Chim Chum. The comic generally follows a single-panel gag format. A larger, ongoing story remains under wraps, but is in the works.

THE PORTLY SAMURAI

The Portly Samurai hails from Ancient China, and has a long, sordid past he does not like to talk about. Because of his obvious physical build, freelancing as a samurai is hardly a lucrative position. P.S. relies on quick turns of fortune and the clever cuteness of his diminutive pal to maintain his dietary standards.

CHIM CHUM

Chim Chum the fox is something of an enigma. There’s a lot of personality crammed into this small package, but little is actually known Chim Chum’s origins. Equal parts best friend and main antagonist to the Portly Samurai, Chim Chum seems to enjoy being part of the Dysfunctional Duo.

Join us this week on Comics Coast To Coast as we talk to Adam Huber(t) of the webcomic Bug.

I’ve had a weird relationship with Bug.

Ever since I was a little kid I knew I wanted to become a cartoonist. The only problem was: I had no idea what kind of strip to draw. Throughout my life, I’ve created lots of characters. Hundreds really. And I was dissatisfied with every single one of ‘em. They were all cute, trite and hacky. Once I turned 30 I began to panic. I started having doubts that I’d ever find the the right character (or characters) for a comic strip. What I didn’t realize is that I already created the perfect character for my sense of humor fifteen years earlier.

It was my freshman year of high school and I was in English class. The teacher handed each of us these clear sheets of plastic and a marker. On the plastic was a sentence with a grammatical mistake. Our job was to write the sentence correctly on the sheet of plastic. The teacher would then collect them and place them one by one on an overhead projector so the whole class could see how you corrected the sentence. Then the teacher would hand out all new sentences and we’d repeat the process.

Join us this week on Comics Coast To Coast as we talk to Joel Duggan of *Star Crossed Online. (correction: it is just StarCrossed…one word…uppercase ‘S’ uppercase ‘C’…the online is implied)

I was born and raised in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. For those who aren’t in the know, Dartmouth is part of the city of Halifax, on the east coast of Canada. I’m happy to say I’ve made a career out of cartooning in my home town. Cartoonist. Illustrator. Animator. Over the past decade I’ve worn a lot of hats.

I started in animation. Animating, supervising various projects, design and development, and eventually production management. In 2004 I founded Animafax Entertainment, a small illustration and design studio. Over the last few years I’ve worked with several other studios, locally and internationally. I’ve been lucky enough to have experience on shows like Mucha Lucha and George Of The Jungle and a few others spanning most of the major cartoon networks.

My work focus has slowly travelled in circles. When I was very young I just wanted to draw cartoons of any kind, inspired by classic Looney Tunes and Disney animation. In high school I had brief aspirations to work in comics. In university my personal work centred around drawing comic strips. Bill Amend (FoxTrot), Jim Toomey (Sherman’s Lagoon), Frank Cho (Liberty Meadows) and of course the venerable Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes) were my canon. My own strip at the time, Jungle Jazz, was published in the weekly university paper for a little over two years until I graduated in 2001. Eager to pursue a career in syndicated comics Jungle Jazz was submitted to (and rejected by) Creators Press Syndicate that same year. Publishing comics online never occurred to me. At the time I don’t even think real high speed internet had been rolled out in Dartmouth. I decided a better way to make a living with my pencil was to take another serious look into animation.

Now, the bulk of my contract work is back to illustration, though I still do some small animated projects. Starcrossed is a return to my love of comic strips. The popularity and freedom of publishing comics online rekindled my interest in comics and provided the opportunity for an audience. I also think the time was right creatively. Writing and drawing Starcrossed is easily the highlight of my week.
