If you actually enjoyed Resident Evil 5....well....good for you. Personally I found it highly problematic and not all that interesting story wise, so much so that I never even finished it. But I loved the hell out of RE4! This appears to be a return to form and judging by this trailer, it looks like it's going to be freaking amazing!

CE Musical Review: Green Day's American Idiot

Dancap presents American Idiot is an energy packed performance that breaks new ground in rock opera theater. Featuring all the hits from Green Day’s American Idiot as well as some songs from 21st Century Breakdown, this musical is sure to have you singing and dancing along with the fabulous cast the whole way through.

American Idiot tells the story of three young men: Johnny (Van Hughes), Will (Jake Epstein), and Tunny (Scott J. Campbell), who have grown tired of the hum-drum lifestyle of suburbia. As they set out to find themselves and their places in the world, they are faced with reconciling their ideals with the reality of post 9/11 America. The story provides a snapshot of many of the problems and decisions faced by today’s American youth, including military service, drug addiction, relationships, pregnancy, and growing up. Through foot-stomping, head-banging musical numbers, the story explores what it means to pursue your dreams in a hostile world.

Having enjoyed Green Day’s American Idiot album numerous times at maximum volume, I was prepared for an extremely loud rock music experience. However, in American Idiot The Musical, the instrumental music was quite toned down in comparison to the vocals. Understandably, a musical’s vocals are meant to stand out against the instrumentals, but this approach seemed to somewhat temper the angst that defines this story. Nevertheless, the vocals were outstanding. I truly appreciated the harmonies and group vocals, and I felt that these presented a greater sense of solidarity with the characters as they share their stories with the audience. I also appreciated that many of the solos were shared between the cast members, allowing each of them a chance to shine.

The song that stood out most to me, both on the album and in the musical, was “Are We the Waiting”. The musical’s use of this song to represent the all-too-familiar post 9/11 drafting of youth into the American military was a stark reminder of the limited choices that today’s youth face. The ensemble, clothed only in their skivvies and saluting a distant and faceless nation, sang this song with such passion, bringing a new, but equally heartbreaking meaning to both the song and our contemporary understanding of freedom.

The entire cast of American Idiot was phenomenal. In particular, Van Hughes’ portrayal of Johnny was both insightful and moving. I felt that he brought a sense of humanity to an otherwise inimical and emotionally ravaged character, and it was obvious that he embraced the rage + love aura so integral to the overall story. I was delighted to watch Joshua Koback’s portrayal of St. Jimmy, which I found terrifying and hilarious at the same time, and the strong, angry, yet loving personification of Whatsername that Gabrielle McClinton brought to the stage was a wonderful interpretation of this lyrical fem-anti-hero that I hold dear to my heart.

American Idiot is a fast-paced rockin’ show that is definitely a must-see! While it may not be family friendly (sex scenes and a liberal use of profanity come to mind), it is definitely worth catching before it leaves town. So grab a few friends, a few drinks, and your favorite pair of suspender-ed drainpipe jeans, and prepare to be blown away.

CE Game Reviews: Resistance 3

Having never played through the first two entries to the series, this was my first foray into the world of Resistance...and unfortunately, I can't say it blew me away.

Joseph Capelli, who is the player character this time around, just happens to also be responsible for the death of the previous player character Hale after he was infected with the Chimera virus that turns everything into alien beasties of various shapes and sizes.

Your mission in this game is to get to New York City to meet up with your family and also to escort an old scientist, who seems to refuse to use guns, along the oft dangerous road with the ultimate goal of stopping a Star Trek Remake-style terraforming machine from destroying the earth.

Thankfully there are some nifty weapons to scratch that itchy trigger finger of yours. Including what can only be described as an alien riot gun(atomizer), an x-ray gun capable of shooting through walls (wait a tic...I've seen Eraser with Schwarzenegger...that seems familiar) called the Auger Mark 2, in addition to a handy dandy Freeze Ray (Cryogun). Also, each weapon has a built in levelling system that improves each weapon the more you use it. Indeed, there is no shortage of weaponry to tantalize, however at points in the game there is scarce ammo to be found.

An interesting choice on the part of the designers is the use of med packs instead of regenerating health. Which can also be pretty scarce in sections of game play. Thankfully in portions where you're under heavy fire, the enemies with drop heath packs as well as ammo top ups. Tho overall a lot of the game is essentially "go over here...good...now shoot bad guys...now go over here and shoot more bad guys". A lack of engaging game play and puzzles sort of left me feeling like I had just watch a really long movie on a VHS tape that required me to constantly adjust the tracking.

The game is not without some fun visual spectacles, however. There's a bunch of giant monstrous baddies to blast (tho mostly you just run away from them). I was confused about the extremely large 'Feral Chimera' creatures which just seem to destroy anything in their way, human and chimera alike. I suppose it makes them seem scarier.

While I have yet to try going through campaign mode with a partner, I imagine that it would open the door to better tactics as some of the NPCs you fight along side in the solo campaign can be a little less than helpful on the battlefield.

As a fan of the FPS genre, I had high hopes for this game, but found it to be a solid effort with decent game play, but it overall doesn't stand out from a crowd and likely won't be showing up on any Game of the Year lists.

CE Musical Review: The Addams Family

Halloween may have come and gone, but there are plenty of thrills, chills, and laughs to be had at the Toronto Center for Arts as DanCap Productions begins its two-week run of a new musical comedy, The Addams Family.

Dancap Productions graciously invited us to the opening night performance of this musical comedy, inspired by the work of legendary cartoonist Charles Addams. Written by Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice, with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and choreography by Sergio Trujillo, The Addams Family features the kooky, creepy family we all know and love. In this original story, Wednesday has fallen in love with a “normal” boy and when puppy love turns to marriage, it threatens to tear the Addams family apart—and as you'll discover over the course of the evening, nothing's more important than family.

From the opening number, it was clear that a lot of effort went into bringing the Addams Family manor to life through excellent set and prop design. A creepy cemetery, complete with tombstones, fog, and some spooky singing ghosts, started the musical off as the family is introduced in the opening number, “When You're An Addams.” Progressing through the show, you'll see scenes set in practically every room in the Addams' house, from the dungeon to the childrens' torture chamber/bedroom. Surprises are never in short supply, and you'll be delighted by the clever and innovative puppeteering (ever seen a bed change into a giant monster and walk off stage?). A particularly weird and wonderful number performed by Uncle Fester (Blake Hammond) has the bald, portly uncle-of-no-specific-gender-or-preference floating around the stage as he serenades his one true love, the moon.

The performers did a great job of bringing the Addams family to life (or death), and the whole family (including long-dead ancestors) was given time in the spotlight. Specifically, Douglas Sills, as Gomez Addams, was absolutely captivating, and delivered his lines and musical numbers with wit, levity, and that trademark Gomez Addams charm. Whether due to the writing or just his own personal charisma, Sills easily engaged the entire audience, and by the end we found ourselves cheering in triumph as he manages to keep the family together (and maybe even welcome a few new additions to the Addams clan).

As for the rest of the cast, it was a great ensemble; special mention goes to Patrick D. Kennedy, whose performance as the youngest Addams, Pugsley, was impressive due to the sheer difficulty of some of the high notes the young lad managed to hit with ease during his musical numbers. The surprise operatic performance of Lurch (Tom Corbeil) had us laughing and cheering—Mr. Corbeil is an established opera singer, and we were just waiting for him to get a chance to show off those zombie pipes of his. Great job!

Oddly, while the story primarily revolves around Wednesday (Cortney Wolfson) and her love interest, Lucas Beinke (Brian Justin Crum), we found ourselves more captivated by Gomez and Morticia than by the younger lovers. Not to say that it was detrimental to the show—and both Wolfson and Crum's performances were enjoyable—but the younger characters seemed to be a little lacking in depth. We didn't really get a chance to explore their relationship, which is odd, since it was so important to the story.

The music takes inspiration from all genres, from the calypso-driven “When You're An Addams,” to the ragtime style of “Full Disclosure.” Eric particularly enjoyed the black humor of the vaudevillian number “Just Around the Corner,” in which Morticia performs a chorus line with both the ghosts of Addams ancestors and Death himself. Another memorable moment (mentioned earlier) was Uncle Fester's absurd serenade of the moon in “The Moon and Me,” during which the audience erupted with cheers and laughter as Fester floated ever closer to his lunar love. The songs are very memorable and really very Addams-authentic; the subject matter and musical styles fit perfectly with these classic characters. The musical numbers culminate in a fantastic ensemble performance with Gomez and Morticia taking center stage in “Tango de Amor,” a complex dance routine that really demonstrates the quality of Sergio Trujillo's choreography.

Despite being a group obsessed with the macabre, stories involving the Addams family have always put special emphasis on the importance of family, and this production is no exception. This underlying theme is really what gives the story its heart, and allows us to relate to the Addams' throughout the performance, no matter how weird they may seem. The Addams' also teach us that being “normal” is relative, and every family is a little bit odd, even if they have a shiny, happy exterior. That's why Comma Error highly recommends you bring your weird and kooky family to the Toronto Center for the Arts for this delightful musical that will have you laughing 'till you croak.

Welcome to the PlayStation Lounge

This past Sunday marked the grand opening of the PlayStation lounge here in downtown Toronto, Ontario. The event featured appearances and autograph signings by Luke Schenn of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Robert Cogburn from Naughty Dog the game developer responsible for the award winning and might be a movie someday, Uncharted series.

Located atop the EB Games at 267 Yonge St. The space is actually the first of it's kind in Canada and was brought here after the success of other lounges located in the US, most notably New York. A spokesperson from EB Games told me the they were really excited to bring this type of space to the city of Toronto and are planning many more events including: midnight product launches, media events, and game tournaments. Even as I wandered around the space on Sunday an Uncharted 3 tournament was already in full swing. Microsoft has its play spaces that feature their Kinect motion controller and now Sony has its own exclusively branded space to showcase... well everything! It's part EB Games, part Sony Store, all play.

The first is over 300 photos from the 9th annual Toronto Zombie Walk, which took place in the decaying ruins of Toronto last weekend.

Sony PlayStation Holiday Showcase 2011

The holidays are just around the corner so it's no surprise that publishers are pulling out the big guns and setting their sights on gamers as the holiday buying frenzy gets underway. This past Wednesday Sony and PlayStation held it's annual holiday showcase at the Liberty Grand here in Toronto, Ontario. I was on had to see what gamers and techno geeks can expect from Sony this year.

Sony

Sony is hoping for another year of success with it's latest offerings, 3D displays, personal 3D viewers, upcoming PlayStation titles and the PS Vita were just a few of the things that Sony was showing off.

The PlayStation Vita

After being super excited by it's announcement at E3 this past June I finally got to hold the awesomeness that is going to be the PlayStation Vita in my hands. Right off the bat I was surprised at how light and comfortable it was to hold. The screen is massive and the touch controls on the front screen were really responsive while I was playing the PSVita version of Little Big Planet. Also I'm was absolutely loving the addition of a second analog stick. However, I am a bit concerned about the rear touch pad. I found it covered too large an area on the device. You could get the same functionality out of a much smaller touch pad and that way my fingers wouldn't be brushing against it while I'm using the Vita's other controls.

Uncharted 3 Drake's Deception

Treasure hunter Nathan Drake is back, and surprise surprise he's gotten himself into a another heap of trouble. At the Showcase I got a chance to try out one of the single player levels which had Drake stowing away aboard a massive cargo plane.

I can say with confidence that Uncharted 3 will feature some of the most unique level design I've ever seen. This is going to be an adventure for the ages and I can't wait to play it.

Twisted Metal

Yup, Twisted Metal is back and looking really good. The environments are massive and everything looks nice and polished but I couldn't really pick up anything new that I haven't seen done in Twisted Metal before but for those of you with insatiable blood lust you may find yourself right at home in this violent vehicular shoot 'em up.

3rd Parties

Sony wasn't the only one showing off their good. Several other publishers were on hand to show off their wares.

Disney

Disney Interactive Studios has a new action/platformer hitting store shelves later this month called Disney Universe. You and up to 3 friends can all join up and battle your way across 6 worlds inspired by Disney and Pixar's films. I was told that this will be the first game where the Disney and Pixar worlds have come together. Which, in this writer's opinion, is nothing short of awesome. The gameplay was very reminiscent of LEGO Star Wars, which is hardly a bad thing and there's lots of fun collectibles and unique powers that will help you in saving the world of Disney/Pixar. In a season filled with shooters Disney Universe may be a welcome change of pace that will allow the whole family to play together.

Ubisoft

Ubisoft was showing off Assassin's Creed: Revelations at this year's event. More specifically, I got hands on with the game's multiplayer mode. I played a decent amount of multiplayer in AC: Brotherhood and I'm happy to say this latest iteration is just as promising. While playing the demo I was a little unsure what specifically has been changed other than the maps, character models, and animations. Don't get me wrong, they all look great and I was told by an Ubisoft spokesperson that the team has added all sorts of new features and tools for you to gank your friends with. Unfortunately, the gameplay felt almost identicle to last year's offering in AC: Brotherhood. That said, I barely scratched the surface and can't wait to see what else this new edition of multiplayer may have to offer.

It was great showcase which just backs up my point that this is and will continue to be one of the most exciting years in gaming ever.
