Pete, I couldn't agree more about the need to have something worth talking about. All companies need to look carefully at what the reason might be for customers to want to strike up a conversation. Not every brand has the cache and interest of Mercedes Benz. But, many companies do have one important on-ramp to community and that's customer service.

I talk about this at greater length on our blog here:

Hi Pete ??

I was part of the study and can tell you that often times the dollars were not spent on technology but on agencies. Second of all , and in some cases, it makes sense for companies to spend appropriately in order for their communities to deliver results that will move their needle. I took one such case study apart as an example here (http://tinyurl.com/57odtk).

That being said, I agree with you that technology should not be the major driver for communities. In fact we learned that if your community would not exist in a discussion group it would not exist anywhere.

I also agree that companies who want to succeed with communities have the put the community member at the center of the effort and not themselves, their company or their product.

The study did include many companies who are using existing , off the shelf tools - I am not sure where you got the impression that it did not.

The study was not all about doom and gloom, but unfortunately that is how some people spinned it J
I have more about it at http://www.beelinelabs.com/tribalization.

Great post Pete. It's funny to see the volume of money these companies spend on creating web based communities with no real following when you consider how many web entrepreneurs have created social networks for a few hundred bucks using open source software and attracted hundreds if not thousands of followers.

Yeah, Mike. I agree with this for the most part. And for most companies, it may be endemic of the organization that "lessons learned" leans more toward "crises averted." What is so hard about rank and file operation at Apollo was this culture of crisis aversion that had come so far that employees hungry and eager for change, willing to do what it takes to make change, were so often brushed off in the wake of "Mission Accomplished" style banners and flowery press releases.

It's a tough position to be in, no doubt: being aware of violation in the works, yet knowing that admission of violation poses great and imminent threat to operation itself? No. No thank you. Not for me.

Pete,

An interesting commentary. I know you've posted in the past that you felt a red tide coming and thought it best to leave. This is clearly part of the red tide.

I think this is a normal perception of big business. To overlook or minimize the impact of such gross legal action. I've always likened it to ostrich-style management. Sticking your head in the sand doesn't make it go away, it leaves you VERY vulnerable with your butt hanging out.

You are right that the employees know what happened, they are intelligent and savvy folks, for the most part, and the new generation of workers (that is millennials) are especially adept at discovery. Sidestepping major issues forces employees to wonder and fill in the gaps.

The vision at Apollo always was, provide a great education with great customer service and profits will follow. Has Apollo departed from the basic notion of good stuff, served well = money for all?

Yeah, I admit, this one affected me. When I did the apple commercial I remember having this conversation with the VP marketing over dinner in Boston. I asked her what it was like working at the company and if it was as great as all us fanboys dreamed it could be. her response at the time was something as close to crass as I could imagine. "We're a computer company. No matter how much you love them, they're still just boxes with electronic components inside. It takes systems and processes and groups of people and just as much politicking as any other big computer company to get it done. You work here for a while, and you realize you're on less of a crusade, and dealing with more of a job."

I get it now, now that I'm older, I suppose. Now that I've worked at a number of large, political organizations. Still, it sucks to pull back he velvet curtain sometimes.

Pete,

Glad you posted on this topic. My blog about my own UOP experience is one that is of my own free choice and my honest perceptions of my experience. I got the eMail too about MySpace and instantly felt it was an experiment to see how it might work.

Your early posts of MySpace and my own anecdotal evidence suggests that it is not a place for advertising anything, much less school. Sure the demographic of Axia students is similar to MySpace but it would be much more effective of the school to mind MySpace for honest impressions versus trying to create a community of chosen impressions.

I cruised the comments and was shocked at all the positive ones, and the complete lack of negative ones. A quick Google search will turn up at least a few comments from frustration to disdain.

Alas, marketing is not an area of opposing viewpoints, it is mostly an environment of branding a singular positive image. So much for diversity.

An interesting point about the broad-based skills needed to be successful in the working world. The skills required, more than the one that are task-oriented, critical thinking, etc. lead to a more diverse and growth oriented workforce and company.

Are they absent in traditional education, mostly, and major employers know that. Still, they cater to traditional institutions for what, they admit, is a graduate population that lacks needed skills. Perhaps, this is the rut of working with the same old, same old and the energy it takes to review new possibilities that offer the company what is needed.

Modality is a popular argument and I wonder if it is not just the easier debate. Perhaps the debate moves to the creation of applicable skills required by the corporate economy.
