Great comment and post. Hope we can expand the discussion when the Silicon Valley Traveling Geeks come to London from July 6-10. There are important developments in public/private partnerships in the States that recognize the public/private/NGO sectors can provide great benefit to regional economic development. Often this is in prosaic functions such as streamlining building permits and inspections, parent teacher communication on a child's real-time school performance, contract bidding, tax return filing and many other functions large and small.

Hope we can engage with regional planners and development people during our time at 2gether09

Great post. I particularly agree with your observation that while political rhetoric and rationale might recognise the importance and potential of technology to improve the democratic process, that there remains a significant gap between this rhetoric and policy-making reality.

Even the specatacular success of the Obama campaign's usage of social networking tools to mobilise support was still somewhat one dimensional - there was, for instance, no simple mechanism for people to meaningfully contribute to his evolving agenda.

We at polyWonk, who are somewhat consumed with these ideas, take heart from the various experiments that governments seem to be embarking upon, frequently in 'skunkworks' like manner by innovative civil servants eager to apply web 2.0 notions of collaboration and user-involvement. The growth of networks and events like this weekend's GovBarCamp show the excitement that is building. Although no one seems to have hit on the magic formula yet (and perhaps never will), it is clear the direction things are headed. As young civil servants and citizens -- many of whom use social networking and collaborative tools in their life outside of work -- progress in their careers and life, we will see a greater and greater demand for government policy-making and services to catch up with the Wiki world - embracing the wisdom of the crowds.

I look forward to discussing these ideas further at 2gether09.

Good stuff Steve. Yeah I particularly like:

"young despite the years, we are concern, we are hope despite the times."

From the new track I mentioned that I finished up over the holidays:

"though she chokes from smoke from the 10 o'clock blues
seeing god's facade fuel the family feuds,
she fills her ears with podfilled tunes
and walks the talk as her mood future blooms.
everything's possible in your mind.
everything's possible in our time."

http://youtube.com/watch?v=MfhyHuI2j5Y

Looking forward to participating in what looks like one of potential great events of 09.
