Thanks for all your support! Really appreciated. One other fine Compass Box representative to look out for is our Assistant Whiskymaker / Sorcerer's apprentice, Gregg Glass, recently voted Young Whisky Ambassador of the Year at the World Whisky Awards in London. Coming to a tasting near you soon! Come say hello and share a CB whisky or 2 with us.
Cheers, Chris.

Sara, If your friend has indicated he thinks Lagavulin is the best, I'd definitely take that as a hint that he may like it :) And I will agree, the Lagavulin IS indeed a great dram (though I disagree that any single whisky can be consider globally "the best", as it all comes down to personal taste). A quick search shows you can find a bottle of the 16yr anywhere between $45 and $100. The 16 year is the least expensive, but still a very good dram, whereas the 1991 double matured or the 1993 will have a more distinctive character which of course comes with a higher price. The 16 year will also be the easiest to find at your reputable liquor store or online if you live in an area which allows shipping of hard alcohol. From my research I'd say stay away from the 25yr, unless you have already tasted it and like it (and want to pay THAT premium for an older whisky).

Now, if you want to take a chance, the Caol Ila 18 ($60-$200 oddly) is a solid dram oft used in a number of blends I enjoy, and the Bunnahabhain 12 (pronounced boon-uh-hah-ven) is a great dram for $35-$50 which will be closer to the Macallan in taste than the Lagavulin, even though it is from the same Islay region as Lagavulin.

Taking the article above to heart as well as the information you've provided I'd say you should be good with any of the bottles mentioned in this comment as a guide line... Best of luck and let us know what you decide and how he enjoys whatever you go with :)

Hi, I admittedly know nothing about whiskey or scotch but the person i would like to buy a bottle for usually drinks mccallan at bars and says something called Lagavulin is the best. With that little bit of information do you have any recommendations? Your article was very helpful but unfortunately i don't know anything about the whiskeys he likes so i can't apply the characteristics of those toward something else... I would like to spend somewhere around $50-75? No more than $100 for sure. I suppose I could go with Lagavulin but i'd like to go with something he may not otherwise be aware of or have tried... thanks in advance!
