For these same needs, we did use an Elfiq Networks Link Load Balancer (http://www.elfiq.com), which are just great.

Thanks!

I've tried this with some threaded net/http code on ruby 1.8.7 and I don't see any difference in speed. Does this actually make net/http non-blocking?

True story: on the night train from Paris to Rome, we had a family with a sick or unhappy baby in the car next to us.

All through the night, the train would pick up speed between cities, with the rocking motion putting the infant to sleep. As soon as we'd slow down or stop in a small town, though, the baby would holler again. This happened ten or twelve times. In hindsight it was pure comedy (if not to the baby itself); at the time, it felt like "No Exit".
