One aspect of increased democracy is also a sense of what could be called civic responsibility. If people are engaged in collective action democratically through food coops, resident's associations, and other levels of social life there would be a feeling of being engaged and committed to not only solving individual but collective problems. The major fear of a collective identity is the absolute uniformity and conformity that is implied. Democracy as a structural trait insures individual uniqueness while engaging in necessary collective action. Democracy helps people work in collectives, and over time they gain a better understanding as to how things like referendums and initiatives can be used to express popular will but also adapt to unforeseen crises. In other words, increased civic responsibility can mean a more articulated form of referendum and initiative in the long-term.

You bring up some good points but let's look at a practical example of democracy beyond simple voting -- namely California. THe referendum process has helped to create a situation in which decision-making by government -- i.e., dealing with a multi-billion dollar budget deficit --has been handcuffed.

California voters consistently put up ballot initiatives that 1. mandate government to solve more problems 2. hold down taxes. Without deficit spending, these goals cannot occur. The goal to increase taxes on corporations has not -- as far as i know -- been passed by government or the people. I would argue -- though many would disagree -- that increasing taxes on corporations could be problematic (ie. new york city keeps property taxes way down by taxing wall street profit. In a recession, this strategy guts the tax base)..

Further. government is California is mandating specific amounts of tax dollars to specific line items -- i.e., education financing, limiting the ability of government to change priorities especially when facing crises....

Though a noble idea, increased democracy directly to the people can be a double-edged swords. The people can screw up just as bad or worse than elected representatives can....

One unbiased tone of voice for NBC in the Television show. He still carries a genuinely tough immigration law plan. He graduated for the Harvard Collage. At present he offers her 1 Stereo Show. He couldn't such as this Us leader.

This is the same old rambling that keeps us Greens impotent. Sure, the Dems and GOP are corporate tools and the Teabaggers scary fanatics. But not one word is mentioned on why the Greens are a better choice for independents and disaffected Dems and Republicans. We need to leave the echo chamber and start selling our party and its ideas to people who aren't already following us but are open to alternatives.

chiropractors westchester You can be a businessman if you like. You have to have the capital and the ability to run a business if you want it to succeed. When a man is self-employed he will find life challenging.

I think the key is to clearly illustrate how the Tea Party frame their discontent, in order for Greens to offer an alternative through policy and a theoretical background that can speak to it. The discontent that the people in the Tea Party are feeling should never be dismissed, but how ideology shapes that discontent into a policy outlook that will just continue that discontent must be made manifest. Their assumption that conservatism is the automatic position of the majority of Americans must be disputed first before an alternative that really empowers them can be convincing to them.
