I am a Canadian who left British Columbia 15 years ago to live in the UK. Since being here, news of these events has come to light. I am appalled and horrified that such a thing could be happening in the beautiful country where I was born...but what shocks me even more so is how these events have lead to a huge discussion on the media and how things are reported!!!! Okay, we can speculate on many things to do with these disappearances and murders and the circumstances surrounding them, but the only thing we all know for certain is that this is happening and nobody knows who is doing it or why. I'm all for having intellectual discussions and rationalizing things; but to the families and friends of these women, none of that really matters. What matters is that someone killed someone they loved, and I think that having debates / conspiracy theories etc over the circumstances takes the focus off what happened and the people involved. Of course the relatives might want to know what happened....but why not support / pray for the families instead of all this endless speculation? You'll get further with that, I think you'll find. The most blatant fact of all? These women were real people. Let's work for change on that reality. Media and info only gets you so far, you know.

Hi Spinetrak,

As far as I know the gas in Brazil is not mixed with water. This would cause huge combustion problems - not just for US made cars but for locals as well. The main thing we noticed in Brazil was that our gas mileage decreased SIGNIFICANTLY.

We did a whole bunch of research and we found that the cars made for the US market that had been imported into Brazil tended to develop problems after about a year or so. This was anecdotal and not based on any regular study.

My uncle is an automotive engineer and he said "Suppose you track down the Toyota engineer who designed the fuel pump. What will he tell you? He would say that they designed the parts for E15 and that the parts have been tested under those conditions. Using E25 or other out of spec fuel has not been tested and therefore he cannot say on way or another on what the outcome will be"

Hi Deborah,

The road does end in Panama, at the edge of a deep forest that covers the section known as the "Darien Gap". Because there are no roads the only option is to container ship the vehicle around this section. Most people either go to Colombia or Ecuador.

You can read our post on shipping from Panama below:

http://www.alongdrive.com/a-long-drive/a-long-drive-ca/panama/shipping-from-panama-to-columbia/

The adventures in getting the car back in Colombia is described here:

Just wondering, did you or anyone do any further research on the risk of Brazilian gas to a vehicle built for the US market? Also, was this methanol, alcohol, or what? There's this whole debate pro/con E15 going on, and who knows who's right?

And what about the mixing gas with water story - is this more an urban legend or is it based on evidence?
