A good friend of mine, Rev John Van Hemert, a retired Dutch Reformed pastor now living in Vancouver with a port ministry in West Palm Beach, Fla., was a young boy when the tanks rolled in. I told him of the Dutch training in Jackson and last Memorial Day, 2015, and this Memorial Day, 2016, I planted Netherlands flags at each grave in his honor. I will try to email pix to this site, as well as one of the entire plot.
I remember the stories as a youngster in Jackson.
Joost K. Minderhoud, Sgt. Maj., is listed on the monument next to the bottom.

Dear Amanda,
Joost K. Minderhoud was a member of the Military Air Arm of the Royal Netherlands Indies Army. He was born in 1915 in the Netherlands. On August 15th 1942 the Military Air Arm received a banner decorated with the Military Order of William (the highest Dutch decoration) from H.M. Queen Wilhelmina. This event took place in Pittsfield (Massachusetts). Minderhoud was one of the two escorts to the banner. Pictures of him can be found in the Dutch book "The Royal Netherlands Military Flying School 1942-1944", written by O.G. Ward a.o. which was published in 1982

Read with much interest & enjoyment your post on the Eudora Welty collection of "The Complete Works of Charles Dickens" rescued from a house fire. In 1957, while employed in my family furniture company, I was sent to New Orleans to attend an auction at both Wiseman's & Morton's Auction Exchange. In Morton's, the last item up for bid was a book collection in two large uncatalogued boxes. As an avid reader, I bid $15.00 for the boxes & no other bids were received. Upon arrival in Hattiesburg, my mother (Co-Manager) was observing the items purchased. She was pleased with the furniture items but displeased with the last item & deducted it from my weekly $35.00 paycheck at week end. The books included the biography of Jefferson Davis by Varina Davis which is now in Beauvoir as a donation after Katrina; the same exact aforementioned Charles Dickens edition as Ms. Welty noted; two sets of a collection of Roycrofter's "Little Journeys" by Elbert Hubbard & "Selected Writings"; various military memoirs by various American & British Generals & many other antiquarian editions. There were numerous personal notes & postcards from / to the J.O. Carson (an attorney in New Orleans) & the Borne family members. Have searched for the family members & posted several items on family history sites in an attempt to get the originals back to members of the families. I personally believe that the $15.00 spent for the books in my library was a bargain by any standard. We are natives of Hattiesburg & Petal & visit the area often to interact with our classmates & friends. We will never forget our "Mississippi Roots" & remember our early lives with great fondness for our home state & home towns. The article brought back many good memories & we thank your very much for publishing same. All the best, Larry & Carole Hoffman Morrison of Maumelle, Arkansas.
