Denise:
I have heard and used the canon format (typically 3-part) with scales with great success with ensembles large and small, older and younger, choral and instrumental (winds & strings) - as a substitute teacher.

This warmup provides immediate student focus, opportunities for listening - not only to the scale steps but also to the ensemble's voice of major and minor chords.

Taking this a step farther, one can integrate rhythmic options as is desired.

Thanks for your work at IMC 2011!

Hi, I thought I would note here that there is a very strong link now between SHEP (at the Con) and the Western International Band Clinic held each year in Seattle during November. We have established the Pacific Honours Ensemble Program and you may be interested to see it from both perspectives – our blog and the blog sponsored by WIBC.

Good to hear of all the fine work being done around the schools. I am sorry I missed the chance to come and hear groups play this year – getting on a bit, I think! It’s wonderful to celebrate all the great music at the upper levels – the platinum awards, as we see here. I would like to say that one of the things I enjoy most is seeing (and hearing) the growth of ensembles over time. Much of that has to do with the student’s application but most of it has to do with the quality of the teaching and conducting. I have seen many of the State’s finest conductors on their trajectory towards platinum and gold. I listen to some of the ‘new’ conductors (young and not so) and hear them say “Isn’t ‘X’ lucky to have the group they’ve got – I could do that well if I had that group”. I knew when ’X’ was ‘new’ too and I have watched as they have taken their ensembles on the journey with them. The privilege of watching this present generation of conductors grow has been a joy! The journey has made those conductors aware that the journey continues. Congratulations to you all. Ralph

Thanks John for your encouraging comments about SHEP and the 'coffee with the conductors' activity. We want SHEP to be of benefit to the students involved and of value to the schools they represent. It’s heartening to hear that was of benefit to the ‘old dogs’ (which makes me an ancient one!) Open Con would be pleased to have you conductors let us know how we might add to the PD options in SHEP. We are working on the 2011 program now and we have some exciting changes planned already for the students so it’s possible to add things that will make SHEP even more valuable for you conductors out there too. Best wishes. Ralph

Hi Dan,

Keen to have Unit 7 come to St Laurence's.
We are forming a jazz combo which would rehearse Monday afternoons after school.
Is it possible to organise a concert and workshop session for a Monday afternoon say, 3:30pm - 5:00pm?
Cheers,
Ross Capern
