This was a very insightful post. As you likely know, restorative justice efforts can be difficult to evaluate if you don't acknowledge the surrounding system. What some may see as an intervention focused on 'problem' students often needs to be focused on the whole school. I also completely agree that process eval is essential here to reveal unexpected complexities in implementation. In my experience, required outcomes were tied to processes that were implemented unevenly (such as discipline referrals). Thank you for sharing your expertise.

Great tips! I've started playing with Notion recently and it's working quite well for me. I started with airtable, but that was too spreadsheet-y for one of my clients. In notion, I can create one "database" (what they call a table) that I can then present in different formats and slice it up by things like instruments (and variables) by outcome, which a recent client really liked. The same original "database" was also reformatted to show instruments by Quarter, which they liked the best for seeing the timeline (the Gantt was just too much for them). So far I'm liking Notion and so are my clients. Loving your ideas of using an infographic or even a comic!

This is a profound and much-needed perspective on the role of evaluators. I truly appreciate how you distinguish between denying scarcity and reframing it—it's a critical nuance. Moving from 'problems to be solved' to 'strengths to be connected' is a powerful shift that honors the dignity and agency of the communities we serve. Thank you for sharing these concrete examples from Project A and B; they provide a great roadmap for others looking to adopt an ABCD lens!

Michael's short article is right on target! (Thank you, Mike, for sharing your thoughts.)
I am an old person now (84 but still counting), long retired from 40 years of Federal Government service (initially at DOD but mostly at what became HEW and then HHS) in organizations that developed legislation, regulations, and government evaluations of such. From that experience I can vouch for what he says here. Readers, please take heed, as his advice is not only correct, but very impactful for those who follow it.
Thank you for publishing this spot-on short article, and for offering me a rare chance to endorse it.
Michael, here's wishing you the very best in your professional service.
