Simon,

Thanks for you comment. I'll be writing up the short lunchtime workshop of verbal impro soon (and then the afternoon session called, Music Leaves Its Mark).

Are you still playing the trumpet? I recall we did a gig together years ago in a pub in Shandwick Place - with the unlikely combination of voice, trumpet & piano - no bass, no drums

Cheers

Alan, this is brilliant! It reminds me of a wonderful moment in the recent Coen brothers film Burn Before Reading. John Malkevich, whose brilliant performance takes exasperation to new heights in some scenes, finally says to one of his tormentors
"I know who you are. You're one of the league of morons I've been fighting against my whole life!"

Thanks for posting this article; sounds a fascinating event, wish I could have been there. Chimes with a lot of thoughts I have about the relationship between improvisation and composition; particularly my growing conviction that, to get some of my students to *really* compose (instead of aimlessly typing derivative gestures into Sibelius), I need to encourage them to *improvise*. Possibly in some other domain than music; I'd like to find out more about what an exercise in verbal improvisation would be like. It seems to me that the inhibitory blocks which need to be removed in order for people to 'improvise' might be the same blocks which stop people from composing.

Too late! The English-English speakers should have thought about all this around Alfred's time. But then, I get the feeling that many of those (sorry) illuminated (sorry) individuals don't know when that was, because, as happened with Latin, (sorry) subjects such as History, Philosophy, languages other than English itself, ehem... Music (?) have (sorry) de facto been deleted from the (sorry) curricula in order to be replaced by a few (sorry) pseudo-subjects which will not get us any more free -- which is the role of (sorry) education, innit?

David,

Perhaps I should have declared (Westminster-style) my "disinterest" in the affair by confessing that I was too thick to do Latin at school. For anyone interested in language, though, it's often guessable. In any case, I'm pleased that you provided the hyperlink, which will go straight into my del.ici.ous collection. That, I suppose, makes you part of my learning network. Vice versa?

Monday,3rd of November 2008
I am sorry it has taken me so long to make a comment.
I have been in bed with a bad cold/chest infection for a few weeks.
Just can’t seem to shake it off.
(Am I suffering withdrawal symptoms?)
Thank you for your contribution to the party. (I don't just mean the duet with Mike McGeary) You enter into the spirit of every occasion I have seen you at and this was no
exception...kitted out in your kilt and dancing feet, you charmed everyone.
I am left with happy memories of a wonderful evening.
