"I suppose I’m saying that making doesn’t have to be profound or released to the public or a straight line or the subject of every greasy-till fumble." +1

I'm still making (and keenly fascinated in what others are making) but the stuff I'm making right now is for one user only - me. It's Software for One. My current fascination - how weblogs are made. http://pinboard.in/u:walterh/t:colophon Keep plugging away at whatever it is you're making. Making is its own reward.

It's no longer news is it? It's reaction. Take content, original or not, SEO it, no considered analysis, offer it up to those salivating mobs and move on. And maybe add a poll.

Maybe the Irish Times should add a Timeshift wall not a paywall? You can come back after 24 hours and comment but not before.

Did you manage to check out the national papers while in Japan for their slant on the biggest stories of the day?

Great post. Agree 100%.

I was on a 2-week holiday in Japan, so my news-diet consisted of trying to understand Japanese news (which featured one international story the two weeks I was there - the US debt crisis) and infrequent internet sessions where i'd quickly scan the front page of The Irish TImes and The Guardian

What struck me is that stories that the Twittersphere etc. thought were HUGE (US debt ceiling for instance or the Presidential race) seemed completely inconsequential once you leave the 24-hour news stream.

It has a pretty resounding effect on me. Now when the 24-hour news junkies go rabid about a drop in the DOW, I just think how many people in the world don't know and don't care, and how it may seem HUGE at that very moment, it will simply not be remembered in weeks, days, maybe even hours.

Hi there, I am DESPERATE to find the Rock and Roll track but I can't find it anywhere - not on the albums. I found one note somewhere that said it wasn't released at all.

Any hints on how to find?

Thanks!

Can someone please call me regarding the update on my phone.
I returned it last Friday week for the third time with the same problem and was assured that I would hear from you last week about a replacement phone as all it needed was a nod of approval.
I called in on Friday evening after not hearing from you all week and was assured that someone would get in touch with me on Saturday. It is now 4.43pm on Monday evening and after leaving two phone message today I am still waiting for an update.

This is now just becoming infuriating that I have had to use a loan phone for over a month and this is still ongoing. I have been a loyal customer both with my phone and broadband for the past 17 years and I feel this is extremely disrespectful to treat your customers in this manner. Surely as a telecomms company you should know the importance of good communication.

It can be a tricky area due to an overlap between two forms of IP right that might exist: (1) copyright and/or (2) a database right. Some info here: http://is.gd/g2ZaW

[Pedants corner: copyright exists from creation of the work, so one doesn't have to take an active step to "copyright" something. Therefore, the notice used by IE is merely notifying people of the fact that IE is asserting its rights in this regard.]

Mere recording of facts is generally not capable of copyright, generally just the way in which it's done, but then again Ireland and the ECJ have found TV listings to be covered so it's not unreasonable to say they could cover train timetables too. Great system really.

Football fixtures are copyrighted, you have to pay to use them on any website, so I assume this is the same kind of thing.

I love this post.

There is nothing like having your favourite book shop to visit, and you are right, half the time it's about the chat, and meeting somebody with a shared love of books. I much prefer buying second hand books, it means that you find gems after searching through, like a treasure that was made just for me.

I really liked this post - not least because it reminds me of my only family. The comment about visiting other bookshops and libraries particularly resonates - growing up a visit to the library was a mandatory weekly affair.

My sister now runs what was my parents business, and I can't believe how hard it has become.

When the Hughes&Hughes story broke I was dismayed at the way people spoke of H&H as an "independant". I'm even more dismayed that H&H, free of debts, are now back at a number of locations, while independants have to struggle on.
