That's a fully loded question! You could discuss an entire range of things, from machinery advancements leading to the redundancy of manual tasks; the demise in basic social skills due to social media, networking, chat, email etc. affecting the way we interact on a daily basis. You could talk about transportation effects on traffic congestion in developed, urbananised cities; the increase in cyber crime, online piracy, theft, fraud; physical health effects on the eyes, deafness, obesity (!); then you could go all the way to nuclear technology which god forbid would probably be the darkest of all....

Follow up - Today in the Australian July 27th 2010) David Frith writes an article entitles "SMS available soon on domestic flights". It seems the solution to provide a service comparable to what's on offer in the US is available, however the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is unlikely to adopt this.
Why are we being offered a second class, outdated service?

Haha your'e date scenario sounds very much like something i would do :P

Web 3.0 has been labeled the Semantic Web, as we are seeing the ability for the web/searchengines to understand meaning behind information on the web, and deliver it to users in a highly contextualised way.

WolframAlpha.com amazes me, this is the start of the great web3.0 emergence it analyses HUGE amounts of data and brings it together to be displayed for the user in a really useful form.

When we are doing research on a particular store, restaurant or product, we want want as much information as possible, whilst only doing a single search, whether that be a photos, location with a map, reviews, or even which one of my friends has purchased before.etcetc.. The platform that can efficiently aggregate all this information together in an useful way will be the winner of the 3.0 race.

Thanks for your comments L. I completely agree, this information could just as easily be stored in a business folder though having access to all this information in an organised system with images, interests and friends makes it that little bit easier. It also allows one to make contact with friends of friends or find those people who are of interest which a business card folder, notebook or an e-mail can't do. Linkedin becomes a tool for networking and potential job opportunities.

You are correct, it is so important that agencies follow up with clients once a consultant has moved on, and yes, it's not just about protecting information, it is about utilising it when you have it.

Any information (names, addresses, etc.) contained on Linkedin could just as easily be stored in a business card folder, a notebook, or an e-mail.

The issue at hand here is not who "owns" the information, but rather how trustworthy employees are. Where there's a will, afterall, there's a way.

That being said, it's important that agencies follow up once one of their recruiters move on. I've had recruiters contact me after they've moved from one agency to the next, while the original agency never, ever called me back. It's not just about protecting your information in this case; it's about using it when you have it!

Great advice for a competitive environment! Employees need to have their own competitive advantage to be noticed and get ahead. I think the mentoring system also becomes very important.
