Interesting stuff. What kind of tripod would you recommend, I mean can you give a few examples? I’m using a heavy duty one but the lens on my DSLR is so heavy that even the heavy tripod can’t control the weight properly. Needless to say the tripod was the cheaper option!

You’re doing some really fine work and with relatively modest equipment that almost any enthusiast could afford. IMHO your photos are getting real close to some of the best amateur shots I’ve seen, but all those were taken with big Ritchy-Chretian scopes, ST11000 CCD cameras and often from the dark skies of New Mexico by remote control. Inspiring!

This ia a very interesting and useful site for anyone wanting to learn more about astrophotography. I really appriciate the effort you have put in. In particular, it is those seamingly unimportant comments and observations which may seem trivial to the experienced, but which are most helpful to the beginner – they save lots of time!

I have recently returned to Astronomy after years of inactivity. I have renovated my 10″ F5 Newtonian OTA and have still to get a good mount. I intend to try some photography and your site is really inspiring –

I’ve got GoTo function on my telescope drive system, so I have just entered the coordinates from the Cartes du Ciel and telescope moved there automatically. Then I made an exposure and hoped that nebula is in the field, and fortunately it was.
It was clearly seen on a single photo, that was not a problem.

how were you able to point your telescope to this nebula? It’s so faint, I am sure you were not able to see it on a single shot. Did you just orient your telescope using nearby bright stars and hope that you got nebula in your field of view?

It amazes me how many stars out there, one can not realize it when looks at the sky with naked eye, but Milky Way photos are just full of stars.
