I'm not whining about anything. The Lions are in a tough spot attracting fans right now, and they need all the help they can get. I totally agree teams have gone through worse, but I think it's been proven that in this market, Thursday games don't work, and that given the choice, people will choose other things to do right now. This was more a point about how the Lions have their work cut out for them the next few seasons.

Your team got HOSED on those two officiating blunders. What is it with horrible calls at critical times at BC Place (cough Banks punt return in the Grey Cup cough)? The ability of coaches to challenge OPI simply HAS to be re-instated next season - same for ANY egregious officiating errors.

Re: scheduling. I'm sorry, but you have absolutely NO right to whine about scheduling problems with regard to both the Lions and Canucks playing at the same time. Look at what Toronto has gone through this season, with the very real possibility of playing exactly THREE football games in their so-called HOME STADIUM! Look at what Hamilton has been through in 2013 and 2014, with playing the entire 2013 season at the University of Guelph, and the first half of the 2014 season at McMaster University. ALL Ontario teams had to make accommodations this season for either the FIFA Women's World Cup or the Pan-Am Games, the Redblacks don't bitch when the Senators play the same day as they do, Toronto has a game scheduled when the Blue Jays, Raptors, Leafs, AND TFC all have games scheduled within a 24-hour period.

hi Brian,
Your frustration with the lions comes through loud and strong in this article.
Between your writing and the podcast, there are a couple of stances that are taken, I want to suggest backing one of them.
Is it the players? Is an O line upgrade needed? Do you need more gems? Rainey?
I tend to think the Lions were a bit overrated in the early going. Collie is not the saviour, Manny is not manny, and Harris is well covered while everyone around him struggles. Teams game plan against Harris, so it's hard to expect magic from Andrew when no one else is stepping up.
For the record, I believe you were better off with Kevin Glen than Beck, but neither are a Lullay.
So that leaves coaches. Why are they not getting the best from the receivers? What is Cortez doing to exploit opponents weaknesses? I don't see it in the plan. manny and Leonard were two big targets that just couldn't be found ( Or found trying). So if you can't win with size, then what about speed? That hasn't gone well either.
Although Lullay would help, I tend to believe that it's the coaches that are hurting this club.
The empty backfield is what made Tedford innovative but I don't see a lot of it. I'm sure that's won Tedford the job, but he seems to ignore his genius.
I haven't got a solution to the coaching issue, but I do think the players have turned in a stronger effort than the coaches sans Manny.

With regards to your comment about Braley, I feel that the Lions are starting to feel the same problems that Toronto have been plagued with for the past few years.

Attendance will always drop when a team is suffering but this is really bad. I agree - the Lions as an organization need to pick it up. Bob Ackles did a ton to revitalize the franchise, and now it seems like it's only a matter of time before that's completely undone.

moments when Lavelle Hawkins breaks up the field reminded me of moments with Tim Brown and why we love the excitement of this team and this game . it's fast fun paced excitement so the fan interaction and experience needs to be like that also I would suggest events on the concourse to appeal to young teens and things to do while the game is on even. try to create an environment so that win or unfortunately lose the fan has a great time and a component of that time is to cheer for their team on the field . Get a txting trivia game for ppl on the big screen, on field & in stand promotion teams , chants, selfie contests etc and then for the outside of the Dohmen detainment I don't know much about tailgating but it sounds like it could be promising also something needs to be done to incorporate or at least revamp the street party Live music is great and the face painting but there needs to be some tables and chairs somewhere to congregate something for the kids to do. hybrid of the two family friendly tailgating theme with some live music some arts and crafts some promotional things going on . from start to finish a complete event . Roar!

I'm not sure what you're saying either.

Braley has been a saviour for 3 of the 9 teams in the league -- directly, through his willingness to step up and purchase them. I believe he also had a hand (behind close doors) in saving the Hamilton Pan Am stadium investment from the doom it faced being between a rock (the city) and a hard place (Ticat ownership). A marketing genius he is not, that I will grant. But without him, I highly doubt there'd be a CFL today.

That all said, I think he should sell the Lions. He's already stepping away from the Argos. His job is done.

If I ever see him at a game, I would love to give him a respectful handshake and sincere thank-you.

As an Argo fan, I've been saying this for years; Braley needs to exit the CFL!

He keeps raising ticket prices while giving nothing in return to the fans. Look at the Lion's falling attendance and you can't help but notice it coincides with the passing of Ackles.
Braley may love the CFL and pays the bills, but that's about it. Without Ackles, he is clueless and a detriment to the teams he owns.

Lets realize that SK fired people after the inexcusable mistake hire at off. coord. led to et tu Brute ! Well in BC the top man just gets paid and paid and paid as the fans walk and walk and walk ! Worst confirmation was the owner Mr. Braily indicating he had thought of firing the Coach and GM ; as fans walked on him . Four provincially funded stadiums , a magnificent rebuild are proof that deflate-gate is here in a massive way ! So ; after Toronto and now BC are we to believe the fix isn't in . That an Order of Canada ; has made the recipient so proud ! His job was the Lions not assuring empty seats not signing buddies and paying them outrageous money ! We have surmised 'schmuck"seems quite content to eh cover his tracks and limited football knowledge ! Da fix is in !

That's all true Dave. I'm not saying he's a terrible owner, I just feel the team would be better off in the hands of someone local, who really has a grasp on the market here and who will bring the team up to the level some of it's opponents are at with their operations.

At the Montreal game I was thinking this use to be their back to school promotion night with the lunch boxes, backpack giveaways. Those were the days.
Definitely time to sell but please no local ownership group that includes Skulsky.

All good points Brian, but if I am playing Devil's Advocate, did he not just shell out for a high priced coach with impressive US credentials? Did he not spend close to $100,000* in expanded meeting space at their facility (*according to the July 9 Vancouver Province), shell out for 100 iPads for all the players, and have new high def TVs placed around the locker room? Sure, the club appears to have cut back in certain areas, but the owner could also make a claim that he's not seeing a return on his investments.

I think with two well traveled CFL O coaches in Cortez and Jones( former CFL QB ) relying on a 1st or second year QB straight out of college with no previous pro experiences spells trouble.
ie. Thomas Demarco. BC
Tanner Marsh Montreal
Tino Sunseri SASK.

I would expect to see John Beck as the next up to Lulay. Beck a traveled vet QB that Tedford is familiar with in Days at Cal and Beck at BYU.
Unless they make a deal for another more experienced pro QB

Thanks I really follow the CFL and the evolution and development of National players and where and how they fit with much better and much more players at several different positions now. I dont think that either Rwakuamba or or Parker will start at Field CB where they played in NCAA and have had expereince their. BC as well as most other teams are able to acquire NFL calibr DBs. some with NFL experience, others overlooked and develop as true rookies, and yet still others who may be in the AFL for one reason or another.
I do see where having both Rwakuamba and Parker dressing as a 1-2 at safety with the ability to have one or the other fill a key back up role opposed to having to use one or even two DIs to fill that spot. Due to there NCAA experience and/or devlopment with a few seasons in the CFL.
The CFL DBs are as good as any solid NFL DB. Difference is that smaller DBs have less of a window to prove themselves and can move to the CFL where speed and technique can offset size on the bigger CFL fields.

Hi Steve, thanks for your comments. I agree, I think heading into camp it will be Rwabukamba, Parker and Brinkworth in that order on the depth chart. They also need to decide what to do at the corner spot vacated by Dante Marsh.

-Rwabukamba had his break out year last season with official move to S.
It wil be his job as starter.

-Parker now entering his 3rd season has mastered his teams role and is prime to be the second to Rwakukamba

-Both come from a CB background which gives them solid coverage skills as well. They should be a great 1-2 combo for BC for the for seen future.

-Brinksworth a sleeper as a new found National from a top NCAA DIII program. All signs point to a successful CFL career for him. He has the size to be a S/WillLB and for sure potential to break in on teams very quickly. With Rwabukamba and Parker at S an Chin a year in on teams there will be no need to rush him.
A good scenerio could be half a season on PR running scout team. Get up to speed of pro football on Teams. Then be able to step in when injuries begin to take their toll.
