I love your lemons to lemonaide attitude! The good news is that you wouldn't have taken all this stuff on the trip anyway. This could be the beginning of something big -- or maybe I mean small -- once you start cleaning out, the easier it gets. When I cleaned out of house with plenty of closets and storage space -- of my goodness, how much great stuff that I didn't really need but I loved having -- I separated it into 3 year storage (loved and couldn't be replaced -- so no perfectly good towels or practical dishes) and things to go on the RV. Everything else was donated. I bet if I went through that same stuff again (after a year on the road), I could clean it out by 75%! Good luck on the sorting!

You're absolutely right. It's MUCH easier to get rid of other people's crap. As helpful as a switch would be, I'm sure, I'd much rather just have you come here for a few days to help and I'll just go home with you and help you for a few days.

Oh, who am I kidding? If we ever got together, there would be no separating us. Shhhh. Don't tell Jim that, though, or he'll never let us see each other.

the first words that came into my head when i saw that picture were, "perfect opportunity."
i wish i could come there and help you sort. it's always more fun to get rid of other peoples' crap than your own. maybe we should just switch houses for a week.

Thanks for the encouragement, Rene. Jim and I have just resigned ourselves to the fact that we will have multiple freakouts about multiple things regarding our journey over the next year. It's all natural and part of the process. I'm trying to focus on the things that will keep us moving in a forward direction, though, and trying to keep a positive attitude. I know we can do it. And we will. Just keep telling me that, ok? :)

I love your post. But please don't be discouraged Lee. There are plenty of people that live on the road much more frugally than we do. You are definitely on the right track to figuring out how you can do this, and are much better off than most who just hit the road without doing any kind of budgeting. Keep tracking those pennies, and you'll be amazed at how you can put together the funds to do your trip.

Just do it, Rene. :)

I understand about the gray. Believe me. While I feel much better now about coloring dreads, I'm still unsure at how well it would go over in an RV's small bathroom. I would have to actually try it first. Other than that, the maintenance and upkeep for dreads is very minimal and will lend well to the traveling lifestyle, I think.

If you decide to go through with it, just let me know and I'll direct you to the expert that helped me out: the one and only Ms. Peacefulbean up there. She rocks some pretty awesome locks and spurred me on when I emailed her about doing mine. :)

I am so tempted to start dreads now that my hair is long enough to do so. Even though I don't use much product, I'm sick of the hair routine, which is a challenge in an RV's closet bathroom. And my hair color has been so f'd up since we hit the road. I'd love to grow dreads, but I am so freaked out about going gray (I have a lot of it, and I'm only 38!).

Good for you Lee, I wish I had the nerve!

Funny you should mention that about the kids. Just the other day, Lauren was asking about possibly doing hers. I'm not quite sure she's fully ready for the commitment, but she is thinking about it. Who knows? She may decide to go through with it before we take off on the bus and that will eliminate costs for BOTH females on the trip. Talk about saving resources and money.
