As a moderately frequent traveller, the other part of tipping I struggle with is how much to tip in different countries. In the UK it's been hovering around 10% for a decade or so, which is easy to remember (and calculate), but when I go abroad to the US: is it 15%? 25%? When we travelled to New Zealand this year, where tips are apparently Not The Done Thing, it was actually a little stressful as I felt I was being rude every time.

More young people will go to college outside the country. And that will contribute to the brain drain I believe we will see here as the middle class dwindles -- the best & the brightest will go where they can earn a decent living, and the rest of us will be stuck here in the "service economy."

Right now you can do better if you go to school in Canada. And if you're going to pay $50,000 a year, why not go to the Sorbonne, or to one of the excellent universities in Great Britain? For that price, instead of a junior year abroad, you could take all four years abroad.

The area where having a coach really helped me was in providing some process to my work. It related to #3 above - setting goals. By giving me some structure to help approach both setting and meeting my goals, I was able to really concentrate on the important tasks as well as to arise above the urgent but not important category of activities I undertook.

A lot of people think that coaches are applicable only to senior level executives, but even a mid-level career person could probably benefit from a check-in from an outside perspective to help provide focus and guardrails.

Hm. Creativity doesn't come out of a void. Reading is a source of considerable creativity--it furnishes your mind with things you can use in your own writing, and it spurs ideas. Same is probably true of watching television, within reason...depending on what you watch. Work-related reading, I will admit, can be pretty brain-numbing. Relaxing (with podcasts or sports or TV shows) is a way of looking away from the creative task at hand, and, paradoxically, looking away from it can actually lead to new creativity. That's why we get our best ideas in the shower, eh?

It's kind of sick how some companies treat their employees these days.

My mother-in-law works for a large retail company and they recently implemented a policy that states every manager must work at least one day each weekend. That means that she will never have a weekend off unless she takes a vacation. It's ridiculous.

They also schedule meetings months ahead of time and then cancel them a few days before hand. My wife and I were trying to schedule a trip to invite her on but she couldn't go because of this meeting. Then it turns out that they cancel the stupid thing. I just can not stand companies like that. They were not even apologetic.

I am seriously thinking that if we have a kid, I will be hoping that he or she has one hell of an entrepreneurial streak right off the bat. It would have been awesome for me to have known about personal finance blogging before I spent so much on an "education" that I never used. I had to go or I couldn't interview for the business jobs I was going after...it was like employment blackmail and I eventually found out I like working for myself more than anything...it's frustrating. But it all worked out, so yay!

I am hearing more and more of my peers DISCOURAGING their children from attending college because of the FEAR of their child going into debt.
Maybe college will be obsolete in 20 years- but it is still an imparitive if you want to get ahead in most walks of life. The few exceptions are those who go into the military! Trade school ( good luck finding one of those) or true entrepreneurs ( and those are rare).
I hope your child is bright or has an amazing work ethic- but we do not live in Lake
Woebegone. Most kids witha good strong IQ have to figure out a way to check the college block.
Last, my brother in law never went to college. He is a multi millionaire. He STILL says it was the single largest mistake he made. He missed to learn for learning sake. He made sure both of his boys went and paid for the entire thing.
