Sure it detracts from the message. We shorten everything up to the point where the actual message can be taken as: I have to talk to you, but dont want to actually spend much time with you. Shorter is not better. We have lost something with all the technology. Sure the medium doesnt matter, its the message that counts. And the messages are so short as to read as a monkey got your phone and started texting. Then emails started reading with txt format, now you get full words splattered with abbreviations that are encoded and need the decoder ring from Capt'n Crnch. Not to mention that the dictionary includes txt shortcuts? No wonder our kids cant spell, but they can text at amazing speeds. That works so well for employment applications.

I don't think using abbreviation detracts from communication in the least as long as we are able to transmit our ideas and cause them to resonate with another person. The medium that we use to transmit the idea does not change the value of communication. As long as what we are trying to say is meaningful the communication will be as well.

LMAO! This was awesome, Josh! I really enjoyed reading it. What you said is true (and I'm curious about the fat Polish jokes now), but meh. We're human, and not one person can honestly say they've never done a hateful thing at some point in their life. And I do mean NO ONE.

That's what I'm working on right now. Balance and overcoming that little voice that tells you that you shouldn't be doing this. I would complain about life being hard, but life is actually easy, so long as you can keep your mind open and free. It's remembering to be childlike. Memories of childhood are always slathered in happiness and simplicity.
