Isn’t against years-old anti-trust laws to just buy a competitor and just fire everyone and close it down?

The short answer is no. If the justice dept. thinks that it will adversely affect competition in an industry [typically by increasing concentration] they can take action. This is small potatoes in the broader scheme of things.

... ChampO and STO could certainly have been better, but to my knowledge Cryptic didn’t blow a WAR-sized budget on developing them either.

Opportunity cost. Good will.

They didn't blow a WAR sized budget - true.

But, they certainly didn't 'exploit' the IPs for anywhere close to what they were worth.
There are/were a large number of players who were introduced to the MMORPG Genre by those titles - many feel they have had a bad experience and will not be back.

That is a lost market and lost potential revenue (if you want to look at tit that way).

STO in particular was a license to print money (had it been done right).
You cannot just look at a financial statement and say IF revenue > expenses = profit = success!
You need to look at revenue projections beyond just this financial year.
If you want to be purely fiscal about it - STO should have been turning in huge revenues for YEARS to come.
STO players should have become long term customers and, when later titles were released, the goodwill created should have resulted in an ever growing customer base. (= more profit!)

Do you think Cryptic has achieved that?

@Toastrider: The updates since NCsoft acquired CoH/V may be well received, but it is on an increasingly shrinking player base.

Actually, the City of Heroes/V servers are showing 2/3 or 3/3 population dots since they released Going Rogue last week. The highest I've seen them in the history of the game.

Although this is probably a temporary increase in population surrounding the release of the new expansion, at best.
