Nice! You deserve a medal for this. I'm using this for collision detection in my OpenGL robotics simulator. Compared to some other algorithms I've thought of, this one is relatively quick, which is important since I've got multiple robots and obstacles with a bunch of different geometries all running at once.

jason404- You were trying to run the script as an executable, however, the script previously did not have the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shebang_(Unix)" rel="nofollow">shebang</a> line at the top thus you needed to explicitly run it via python. I just updated the script to include the shebang so this will no longer be an issue.

This does seem to work from a GUI-less Linux machine. I get a error saying that it cannot open x server and then several other errors which must be related. I'm just wondering why it's needed?

@Chris- If I'm not mistaken, the basic algorithm is the same. However, rather than using a list containing denominations (which should really be a set as they should be unique), you would need to have a list containing all the available coins. At each "step" in the solving process, you would need to subtract the used coins from the available coin list.

The may be a more efficient way to do this.

what changes to the above code be made if the number of coins of each denomination is finite ? for example, we have ten pennies, a dozen dimes and nickles , twenty quarters ?

Ernesto-

Thanks for the comment. The algorithm is correct for selecting N independent random lines, however, I never stated that thus I can see where some may be confused. I'll update the post with a clarification.

Thanks for the pointer to an algorithm for a "correct" solution. There may be a follow up blog post in the near future.
