Playing games and chatting with friends will not profit business at all, and why should business pay for time spent socialising. On the other hand Social Media is essential for businesses today to compete in the market, but there is a big difference between using social media to promote a business, offer great customer service, increase brand awareness, engage with customers - and using social media for your private life. We at Silicon Beach Training use Social Media every day but everything we do is to improve service and attract custom.
Paul,

You are definitely right about fear of the unknown with regards to company hesitance with social media. I struggled with the same thing but social media is like that accident that you can't take your eyes from, you just feel compelled to find out what all the fuss is about.

Your point about social networking is excellent. There are still business owners who think that it is a kid's game. Although judging by who I am seeing on Facebook these days, it does seem that the older crowds are really getting on board.

Thanks for sharing.

Brandon,

I enjoyed reading both part 1 and part 2. I think many small companies do not get involved in web sites, blogs and social media is the fear of the unknown. Companies always hear how expensive getting a web site is, blogs sound like a lot of time and I agree with your point about people don't start blogs because they feel they can't write. And finally I think small companies feel the social networking sites of twitter, facebook and linkedin are what the kids are using now like cell phones and text messaging.

However, the kids are the future customers and they consume electronic data. They look for things by searching google not by using a phone book. If you don't have any presence on the web, either web site, blog, twitter, facebook, etc at some point your phone will not ring because the new younger customers will not find you.

Claudine,
Excellent points that we have all been guilty of at times. Productivity is a huge area where we allow distractions to interfere with real production. This causes business owners to be busy but kills their ability to complete meaningful tasks. Having a system in place for e-mail, phone calls, employee interruptions etc. is critical. Thanks for stopping by. I would also love to chat about what you guys do from a productivity standpoint. I will e-mail you.

Excellent post, Brandon.

Love what you said about building your vision. When as business owners we just want to fix the "now" and worry about the later, later, it's a little bit about small thinking.

I see this with my clients sometimes when we're working on systems they want to set up to increase their own productivity. They want to get to "inbox zero," or clean up the paper piles on their desk without understanding the habits they need to create to sustain that for themselves. They just want the problems to go away, which is totally understandable, but what is much better is for them to learn and build a solid foundation so they can grow along with the business rather than get buried in it as they get busier and busier.

I haven't read the E-Myth in a while - time to pick it up again. Thanks for the reminder!

Yes, that is true. But most of us have also never even considered that there is a right way and a wrong way to multi-task. Most people don't consciously think while typing their e-mail, "I'm going to productively multi-task by typing this e-mail while talking on the phone." For the typical person, it is a kind of mindless "faster faster faster" attitude. Same thing can be said that there's a right way and a wrong way to restrict your calorie intake. Most people or a huge portion of people in the U.S. do so the wrong way. That doesn't reduce the value if seeking out the right way.

I get the right way to multitask argument all the time. You are absolutely right that there are certain activities where doing multiple tasks can work. Working out while listening to a podcast is a great example. The problem is that most of us don't know where to draw the line. We spend a lot of time trying to do multiple things at the same time that keep us from doing a great job at any singular task. Examples like: typing e-mails while talking on the phone, texting at meetings or while you are having dinner with your family or having a conversation with your cube mate while you are trying to write a report.

Louche,

Thanks for stopping by. Great to hear your story with building relationships in the blogosphere. I think it's a great example of how you can do this right and it helps to reinforce the point that blogging is not just about the individual blogging but more about having conversations.

I think there's a right way and a wrong way to multi-task. Listening to a podcast while doing your daily stretches or workout or eating breakfast is not necessarily distracting (unless you're trying to do workout meditation). It saves time. However, writing a paper while watching t.v. is not really a productive form of multi-tasking. Not the best example as I rarely consider t.v. a productive form of anything, but do you see my point? Frankly, walking down the street and talking at the same time could be called multi-tasking.

Good idea. I actually started out by posting comments all over the blogosphere, before I was a serious blogger myself. But as I kept reading blogs, I thought it might be a good idea to work on my own. I got serious about it when I wrote my first great post and then decided it was time to learn how to network. I post fewer comments on other blogs nowadays, I suppose because I've already been down that path. This works the other way around as well: when I first decided it was time to network, I immediately started clicking on the names of all the blog commenters I wanted to network with. What actually happened was that I discovered a bunch of amazing, obscure blogs on my topic of interest, clicking on the blogs followed or written by commenters. I read those avidly before eventually creating a new blog on the topic.

Regan,

It certainly feels a lot better to get out of the morning when there is passion attached to it. The other thing is that we often miss opportunities or learn the lesson the hard way. Thanks for the comment.

That was me several years ago! I even slept in and was late for my own graduation; it was a perfect summing up of my first college experience. When I uncovered my real passions, the thought of being late to classes the second time around or being late for an appointment is unfathomable. I suspect my tardiness was my silent rebel saying, "Why are you even doing this, you don't care about it, it's not important to you." I am now that annoying ten minute early person because what I'm doing has value to me.

I love every second of this post. This morning was one of the few mornings where I did not do that and it's been amazing so far. Now it's keeping on it and on it and on it. I'd love to be so great at mornings that I want to punch myself in the face.

Here's to 2010.

Brandon,

Great post man. Also, I like the new theme too. I can read your posts a little better.

I love coming across these type of posts. The posts that make you take a step a back and think about what your priorities and focuses are. It's always to sort of put yourself in check like this.

It's tough to be consistently posting new content but you've done a good job. Keep up the good work man!

Communication is definitely the key here. One problem I have is my tendency to be too anxious. I want things to already be rolling, yet I haven't even really thought about a thorough plan, much less communicate it to my partner or team. I think the best thing is to write out what your plan is, in detail, then gain input from your team.

Ann,

That is a great story and goes to show that it's Ok sometimes to make mistakes and that the measure of a great company is how they deal with the mistake after it has happened. We all need a little reminder in this area for sure.

So the Toyota Dealership in Salt Lake City is a great example of customer service. They've always been good, but here's how they became GREAT....with a strange turn of events. One of their mechanics made a HUGE mistake by not putting the plug in which in turn caused thousand and thousands of dollars of damage.
I was SOOO mad! I paid them money to ruin my car! But of course they fixed it and apologized profusely, gave me a loaner and were 100% accountable.
But the mechanic who "blew it" came to my house to not only apologize, but to fix a problem I was having. Wow...he fixed it in my driveway.
So I learned something from this. Everyone can make mistakes, but if they own it and continue to provide good service, I'm still a FAN! I appreciated them bending over backwards to please me and see that they were still good at what they do.
And thanks for reminding me that I need to apply that same customer care in my own business. It gave me a few ideas!

3-5%??? That's a really sad statistic. No wonder so many businesses fail. A concrete plan for your entire life (especially your business) will increase the chances of success (as opposed to living life by default).

Thanks for the reminder

Aaron,

Many of us have small successes as well as set backs. Being a business owner seems to coincide with 2 steps forward, 1 step back. It's how we deal with failure that's important. I think reviewing your progress daily is a great way to keep yourself on track.

aaron- Thanks for stopping by. I definitely think that doing a weekly review of what you are doing can be a powerful tool to help keep you on track. That is provided that you know where you want to go so that you can measure it. For some entrepreneur's, I would take this a step further and review daily.

I think a good way to get some instant feedback is to review your last week. How you have you done in regards to the questions you ask at the end of this post in the last week? That is a good indicator of whether your on pace to achieve your goals. Brandon, thanks for this post and your others, very insightful and refreshing. I have gotten many ideas when I ask myself the questions you ask in your posts.

Maintaining success is huge in business. I have personally seen and had many small successes, only to fall short shortly thereafter. Daily I sit down and decide what I am not going to do. It may be reverse psychology but it is useful to me. I have a tendency to create huge task lists and then do only a few tasks. Choosing what not to do gives me piece of mind that all the other things will get done on my list just not that day. Daily review of my goals is essential to my success in achieving my goals.

I totally agree with your insights. Lack of focus is certainly a time waster. I had big plans for this year with respect to my internet businesses and it is almost year end and I haven't accomplished what I had planned to do because I kept jumping from one project to the next. I will definitely try to focus on one thing at a time next year.

Thanks for sharing. When we open ourselves up to others, good things happen. Great to hear your story of success.

Great advice. I can't tell you how much I've learned by picking the brains of people who are in my same field. Specifically through asking advice from others I've learned how to structure a tele-workshop, how to make my blogs more effective (new blog coming in a week! yeah!) and ways to relationship build. When you said "We have a lot of relationshiop potential waiting for us to utilize"....I couldn't agree more. Risking a bit of vulnerability can lead to to a relationship both personally and professionally.
